View Full Version : Food~themed movies?

I recently watched two fantastic movies on DVD; "Chocolat" and "Big Night." One of my favorite movies is "Moonstruck" - I enjoy the parts such as Mrs. Castorini making that delicious looking breakfast of Italian bread with the red pepper and egg in the middle, or the dinner scene where they're enjoying the food and the wine, then she warns the Grandfather "Old man, if you feed the dogs any more of my food, I'll kick you 'till you're dead!"

It struck me that I really enjoy food or cooking themed movies. I also enjoyed "Like Water for Chocolate." Anyone remember "The Four Seasons" and the scene where they are making the Chinese food and the rice noodles puff up in the wok?

So, I am wondering...what other movies are out there with this theme that you would recommend? Thanks!

(I thought for sure that this topic has been broached here before, but a search came up with nothing.)

How about "Spanglish"? The DVD has the recipe for how to make "The World's Greatest Sandwich", featuring Thomas Keller of The French Laundry.

Oh, I immediately thought of "Big Night" when I saw the thread title! What a great movie. . .

I definitely remember the scene in "Four Seasons". Also, at the end they are making coffee and having ice cream, and that scene stands out in my mind too.

What about "The Big Chill" in the dinner scene, and more famously, the clean-up scene, where they dance to "Ain't Too Proud to Beg"?

I never saw this, but read about it - "Babette's Feast"?

And how can we forget the Godfather movies?? I guess that is not really a food themed movie, but food is definitely a character!

ANother movie with a lot of food - "Diner" ("you gonna eat those fries?").

Okay, I'll stop now, I am getting hungry!

I keep thinking about Diner. I added it to my Blockbuster queue. I haven't seen that movie since it first came out, but I really liked it then! :p

Yes, French Fries with Gravy! (Danny Stern was our next-door neighbor when we lived in MD).

No kidding!? He's great - he'll always be "Marv" to me. :D (As in Home Alone I & II).

Babette's Feast is the ultimate foodie movie. Really enjoyed it.

Chocolat, the book, is wonderful. Much, much better than the movie, IMHO.

Mostly Martha is a very good foodie movie, though not on the calibre of Babette's Feast. Still good.

I saw both of those and agree. Actually I've seen Babette's Feast several times. Mostly Martha was great too.
I didn't read the book Chocolat; only saw the movie, which I liked a lot.

BTW, gingerpow, you are right that this has been discussed before. That's where I first heard about Babette's Feast a few years back. The search function has been really wacky lately!

Dinner Rush with Danny Aiello, maybe more about a restaurant than food but a very good movie that seems to be a bit overlooked.
