View Full Version : Boston/New England klatch, anyone?

I will be in Boston March 2-9 (then headed to NYC for a couple of days) and was hoping people might be interested in meeting up for a klatch! I mentioned on my Boston travel thread that I am staying at the Marriott Custom House and have a one-bedroom suite there (with separate living/dining area and a kitchenette) where I would be happy to host if people don't mind close quarters and maybe having to sit on the floor. In the alternative, my toes would not be stepped on at all if anyone *wanted* to open up their home instead.

I am guessing weekends are best for most people, so I am proposing either March 3 or 4, depending on which day works for more people.

Thoughts, comments?

Eva - sounds fun! At this point, either date is good for me. It will be nice to meet you, and your DH, and catch up with the others for a Boston klatch!

Hi Eva!

I'll be working March 4, but would love to meet up on the 3rd if that fits for enough others. If not, perhaps we could meet for a meal -- or a run!? -- some other time during your stay!

I could do March 4th (if you could drive me, Lauren, as I'll still be with my right foot in a funny boot from my foot surgery!).

At this point, I'm free either day. I'm "iffy" about having it here, as I live about 40 minutes west of Boston, and my home is currently under renovation. Maybe we could meet at a restaurant in town?

So far, both dates look open to me. Of course, that's always subject to change with my crazy schedule. I hope I can make it down to meet with you all...Boston klatches are always so much fun!

That's what I've heard, which is why I'm seriously considering this. ;)

I've forwarded the link to Kathryn and Sue (mamasue) in case they miss it.

Y'all don't know this just yet, but......well, Eva rocks. :D

No way!! Really???? I'd love for you to come!!!

As of now, either day works for me (it's way too far in advance!!! ).

And I'm up for Eva's suite! It's so much easier to talk than in a restaurant. There will probably be a bunch of us and if we're at a long table you can't talk to everyone.

I have definite plans on March 4 so that is out. March 3 is a possibility but I have to wait a little to know for sure. I think the Suite would be a great place for it! I have also read that the Boston klatches are fun but have never been to one or met any BB'rs IRL so I am hoping I can make it.

No way!! Really???? I'd love for you to come!!!

Uh huh. ;) I've secured accomodations - all I have to do is book the flight. One of the good things about living in metro Detroit is having reasonable access (most of the time, anyway) to inexpensive flights.

I'm putting in a vote for invading Eva's suite, too, for the same reason Loren mentions.

I'd love to meet BB'ers IRL as well, if you're open to new joiners for this klatch. I'm a long time lurker if infrequent poster here. Either date works for me and if you'd like me to host, that's an option too. I live just outside the city and am T-accessible on the green line in Coolidge Corner. DH and DS would be open to having you here too. Sandy, if you come, I'd love to meet you because we may be relocating to Ann Arbor later this year. DH is from Farmington Hills. Spirit now flies to Logan, so it's worth checking with them...

Seems like it's been ages since the last Boston klatch and I'd love to see all the previous klatchers again and meet everyone else, too.

The 3rd works better for me, and, mamsue, I'll be happy to drive again if you are planning to come.

Sandy, I do hope you can make it. If Jeanne and Chaz come we still have a futon in the other spare room. Then we'll have a full house :D
Melissa, newcomers from around the globe or next door always welcome! I had client sites in Brookline and Brighton for 3 years, I miss having a reason to be there 2-3 times a week.

I might be able to make either day!!! I am so excited!!! I love socializing and I don't get to do it NEARLY enough!!! If my hospital schedule permits, I will meet anywhere...Eva's suite sounds perfectly fine to me. :D We can talk about Arizona as a potential place for DF and me to live...

Wahoo! :D Ladies, its been a long time and I am ready. Either date (at this moment) works for me. We have had soooo much fun in the past when we get together. Shall we do a yankee gift again this time? :D Leslie, sounds good to me. Sandy, I can't wait to see you again and Kathryn please come. Bring your baby pictures of Henry and I will bring my granddaughter, Kyleigh's pictures. Who knows maybe some day they will meet!;)

Cindyweightwatcher.....are you there? Can you come? Please forgive for not answering your email.

Not to Boston as a rule. The only airline that flies direct is NW, and I've always paid handsomely for a flight that is only about 1.5 hours. It's the only reason I'm not in town to visit Lindsay more often, and why she isn't here more often....

Hi Sue!!! That was the Harvard Square trip in Cambridge. We ate at Didi Emmons' Veggie Planet and then went over to Burdick's for rich hot chocolate even though it was July!

Am I losing my mind? I don't remember that. I do remember going out to dinner in Cambridge with JeAnne but I think it was somewhere else. This particular time, JeAnne and I went to Salvation Army in Saugus but I thought that was just us and after we ate at Veggie Planet and went to Burdick's. But you might be right also because I dropped JeAnne off back in Harvard Square after shopping around dinnertime I think we were a bit later than planned :) ) and a bunch of people went (back) out so you might be remembering the dinner part that I didn't go to and I was describing the lunch part???

Actually Spirit flies nonstop for the same fare (as of this afternoon, anyway) that NW was offering - about $215. A pretty good deal, IMO.

I'm excited to meet those of you I haven't met already, see the ones again that I have met, and finally change that "virtual glass of wine" that Linda and I keep raising to a real freakin' glass of wine! :D :D :D

So once we nail down a date for this one..what's the plan? Are we just hanging at the hotel or are we planning at least a meal or something?

I'm going to be there for an entire weekend, so I'm going to hope for a meal or two. ;)

In all seriousness, it really depends on what people want. Noshing in a hotel suite is a great way to talk, catch up, get to know people. If there's a market nearby, we could bring munchies and beverages. As someone else mentioned, it's hard to talk in restaurants - especially with a larger crowd.

Of course, being the flaming Libra-type that I am, I'll go with whatever the majority wants. ;)

According to the website, it's 0.1 miles from the Aquamarine Stop on the Blue Line. Does that help?

So once we nail down a date for this one..what's the plan? Are we just hanging at the hotel or are we planning at least a meal or something?

I hadn't really thought that far in advance but am open to suggestions! I have no idea what the hotel is close to but I'm up for whatever people want to do -- hang out in the suite and nosh on snacks (bread, cheese, crackers, wine, etc.) and/or go out for dinner somewhere nearby.

:D :D It's the Aquarium Stop!! :D Meg, you'll have no trouble catching the Green Line to the Blue Line to Aquarium. It will be great to see you again!

As to what we were doing, I was thinking that those of us that live here could bring some finger food and beverages and heat it up or not in Eva's kitchenette. Going out to eat would be fine, too but then we run into the conversation thing again.

Whatever works - I'm a flaming Libra too! :)

Well, I'm a Leo, so no problem making a decision :) Or at least offering 2 choices!
1) we go to the hotel early for a meet & greet, sharing apps and do a swap again as Sue suggested, if people are interested. Then out for dinner.
2) meet at the hotel, head right out early enough for a little walk around/sight seeing/shopping. Have dinner earlyish, then back to hotel for hanging out, dessert, swap.

OK, Bostonians, I need some help with a hotel. We're flying in to Logan at 11:00pm on 2/28, departing 3/4. Is there anything decent/cheaper nearby the Custom House for us to stay 3 nights? Ideally it would have some kind of shuttle to Logan to pick us up since it will be so late (not comfortable navigating a new public transit that late at night with all of our stuff and the kidlet). We'll probably stay at the Custom House on Saturday night.

Sooooo excited to see some of you again, and meet the rest of you for the first time!

I think from preliminary polls that we are leaning towards Saturday, the 3rd, as that appears to be the day that more people can make it. Although I hate to leave anyone out. :(

I am waiting for my dinner to heat up and I just came across this thread. I worked across the street from the Custom House for over 10 years so I know the area real well.

If anyone is looking for a hotel that is steps away (at best 2 minutes), there is the Hilton Boston Financial District at 89 Broad Street. I haven't been in the rooms, but the lobby is very nice -- walked through their lobby all the time, and had a great meal at their restaurant. The hotel has only been open a couple of years (was an office building, Art Deco design, so interesting exterior). There are a bunch of Hilton's in Boston so just make sure you book the right one. I did notice someone mention this hotel already.

Another hotel, that is on the other side of Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall and about a 5 minute walk is the Millenium Boston. I am thinking it could be a bit loud since it is so close to Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall -- a lot of restaurants, tourists in the area. But since it will be March, you won't have the windows open.. assuming they even open. Nice hotel.

A bit farther, maybe 10-15 min walk is the Boston Marriott Long Wharf. Right along the water.

Lisa3575 -- I haven't been in that Hyatt, but personally, just wanted to mention that I find that area kind of rundown/grungy. It is also in the Financial District (like the Custom House) and its in a shopping District -- the original Filenes Basement is there (not sure if that means anything to you), a Macy's etc. A bunch of stores have closed in the area and I know the city wants to spiff that area up. It's a big hangout for teenagers. If you can use your miles at the Hilton Boston Financial District then you are just steps away from the Custom House. I hope you don't mind my two cents -- just wanted to give some input since you don't know the area. Boston is a beautiful city, and that area certainly doens't reflect Boston at its best ... again just my opinion. If you have any questions, just ask. There are tons of hotels in Boston, so if you want to mention any hotels -- just ask. Have a great time!!!!

Although I know what applecrisp means, don't worry about it Lisa, it's fine and safe. Don't want an out of towner to get the wrong idea. No, not the upscale shopping area of Newbury St, so you are more apt to see more teens in hip hop dress than women in cashmere with snakeskin bags ;) but truely, it's a mixed bag in the area! You and Owen will have fun strolling around shopping and sightseeing. You're plenty close to all of our higher end, over-priced shopping areas as well!

You and Owen will have fun strolling around shopping and sightseeing. You're plenty close to all of our higher end, over-priced shopping areas as well!

If it's where I'm thinking, you're right around the corner from the Ritz Carlton Boston Commons Hotel and the Ritz owned condos that Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox lives.

No, I totally understood you. Been there, done that! ;) Now I'm happy to get away from my 2 teenage boys, who are presently doing their "recreational wrestling" in the other room.

Having been there, I'll say that IMHO knowing WHEN you need some ME time away, and taking it, is the the key to avoiding that desperation!

I'll never forget the words of an old friend, raising babies at the same time as me while she was the head librarian at at Boston area University..."each part of my life (mom/professional) saves me from the insanity of the other". Worked for me, too ;)

Lisa3575 ---

I am so sorry, I didn't want to give you the wrong idea about the hotel you mentioned. It's in a busy, financial district/shopping area --- with tons of tourists, locals, kids, business people etc. And, indeed a Ritz is not too far away. And since Boston is such a small city, as others have said you are not too far away from anything, either walking, taxi, or train. I find so many areas of Boston so pretty -- JMO, that that area is not real Boston postcard material (again JMO). But you are there for the Klatch and to see Boston, not for gazing out your window.

There is another Marriott that is about 5-7 minutes train ride from your hotel. It's called the Copley Marriott. The Copley Marriott is in the Back Bay neighborhood (again maybe a 15 minute walk from your hotel, or a 5-7 minutes on the train). That area is just steps away from some of the prettiest parts of Boston (in my opinion). There is great shopping on Newbury Street steps away (that street has a European feel, in the warm weather, many restaurants have outdoor seating).

Now the hotel you mentioned is definitely closer to the Custom House. You can easily walk from the Hyatt to the Custom House. The Copley Marriott is more of a walk, and could be too much with a child.

The Copley Marriott is in a very upscale shopping mall -- with a Westin, Tiffany's, Neiman Marcus, Saks. Williams Sonoma etc. Just to give you an idea of the surroundings. So it probably looks lke many upscales malls in Anywhere USA. Sometims it comes in handy (especially if the weather is inclement) is that is all connected, so from the hotel lobby, you can walk around inside. Also, there are some restaurants and a food court also under the same roof. But of course, there are places to eat on every corner in Boston practically. And an incredibly small Trader Joes across the street.

I don't know what you have planned but just wanted to toss out another option. I know ... don't even know you, and tossing ouy my two cents. If you are looking in terms of proximity to the Custom House -- that Hyatt is closer than the Copley Marriott. The Copley Marriott is a bit farther, but in prettier/nicer area. Again, JMO.

Have a fantastic time!! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate.

Wow, what an impressive group!

I'm gonna vote for Ellyn's #1, doing the meet and greet early, then those who'd like to go out for dinner can do so. I think it will be much easier to talk in the suite -- and really fun! Once 20 people are out on the street meandering around, it's a different kind of thing. (And don't forget, it's early March, when wandering around outside can be, um, challenging.) Hopefully those of you flying in will still get enough "tourist time" before and after the klatch. This sounds like so much fun!

I can't edit my post, but I had originally put March 4th, because my family has tickets to a concert at Somerville Theatre the evening of the 3rd, but it's looking like if I came in with Lauren, I could spend SOME time with you guys, as long as I hopped on (well hobbled on, with my special boot or my crutches) the T to get over to Somerville by around 6:30, I could see you all! Now, I'm happy, as I would hate to miss this.

Katie, are you going to EFO? I knew they were playing in March and then I realized that of course it's the same weekend. DH and I are considering going so maybe we can give you a ride over there.

Yes, we are! That would be awesome, if it works out!
Googlesearch Songstreet Productions and call Rick right away to get seats if you're interested (and like being up close like we do!). :)

We have zero plans, so please feel free to come over whenever it's convenient! But not too early since we are on vacation. :o

Shall we declare an "official" time of say 1:00 or 2:00? I don't really care which. If there are shops nearby, I can pick up snacks like bread, crackers, cheese, etc. We will have all day Friday to explore, so I'm sure I can find goodies while we are out and about (unless it's freezing cold, in which case we're staying in! :o ;)). Others are free to bring anything or nothing - it's a very casual gathering!

I'm so excited to meet everyone! I can't believe how many people are coming from out of state. I hope everyone has a great time in our town and that our weather cooperates.

I think it depends on the terminal/airline you use. He was picked up curbside.

So, we're close to 30 now. I wonder if the Custom House has a courtesy room we can use while we're all together for the few hours munching goodies and swapping gifts? What do you think, Eva? I think the suite may be a bit small for 30 of us?

I will look into it, although I doubt they have anything they will offer us free of charge. Still, it can't hurt to ask. I do know that others will be staying at the Marriott as well, and we plan to try to get our suites next to each other, so that will potentially open up more space. Not to mention that inevitably people's plans will change as we get closer to the date and not everyone will be able to make it. I would be very surprised if we end up with 30 people!

Lisa -

I just had a friend stay at the Custom House a few weeks ago since he had meetings in Boston. The CUstom House was sold out when he first tried to get the reservation, but checked back a bit closer to his visit and they had some cancelations so he was able to stay there. The hotel said they get cancels all the time, so might be worth checking as the date gets closer. He ended up staying there for a couple of days, a few days at the Copley Marriott, and than a few days at a Westin. I can't recall why he switched hotels but it gave us a chance to check out some new restaurants all over town.

Lisa,

I will call them this weekend and see if I have any perks as an owner to get you in. Doubtful. But worth a try. In the meantime, ask to be put on a waiting list for cancellations. Most of the time they keep them even if they don't offer it as an option.

I just got back from spending the day with two friends visiting Boston. They are staying at the Marriott at Copley Place (just a few minutes on the train from the Custom House).

They chose the Marriott since it is near friends etc and a great locale for walking around, dining etc. The reason that I am mentioning it, is that my friend said that she got a much better rate than many hotels that aren't as nice, by calling the hotel directly. It was quite a bit cheaper than what she saw online. I always read that you should call hotel directly, not use 800# but this is the first time I heard about such a good savings. She did a bit of work finding a hotel -- but I will say her middle name should be "negotiate". :p

Just thought I would mention...

Oh, Donna! I am so sorry for your loss. Of course it is not a problem for you to play it by ear and decide that day if you are up to company or not. We would love to have you but will certainly understand if you are not up for it that day.

BTW, I called Custom House and they have a "counting room" on the second floor that is available to guests that we could use if we turn out to be too large a group for the suite to hold comfortably. She described it as a lounge with leather chairs, sofas, tables, etc. that is large enough to accommodate our group of 20 or so if we wanted. It's also available to any guest, though, so there's no guarantee it would be private (there might be random people hanging out in there, although if we are loud and obnoxious enough, we could easily drive them away ;)).

Still no rooms available for March 3, even to Marriott owners, so I will just keep trying, Lisa. :(

BTW, my plan is to send everyone whose name is on the last list posted (of people planning to attend) -- currently that's the list posted by TheresaM on 2/5/07 -- a PM on Friday, March 2 when I arrive in Boston and check into the hotel with the hotel address, my room number, and my cell number. I'm not sure we ever decided on a time, so I'll just call it for 1:30 p.m. Although please feel free to just show up whenever it's convenient for you, whether that's earlier or later.

Soooo, if you know anyone who *might* attend who didn't add their name to the list because they weren't sure, please let me know so I can make sure they get a PM. BTW, I know several people are traveling in for the klatch and may be on the road by Friday afternoon, which is when I can check into the hotel. If you are one of those people and not planning to log on after Friday afternoon/early evening to check your PMs, please PM me with your cell number so that I can call you Friday night or Saturday morning with the details. I know that we've never really "spoken" to one another much but I've heard so much about you from some mutual friends and I was really looking forward to meeting you.

Have a great trip to NOLA - DH and I were thinking about heading back there this year, but we've been hearing so much about the crime levels that we were a bit hesitant (and got a great deal in Mazatlan, Mexico). If you don't mind, would you post your impressions/experience of your trip? DH absolutely loves NOLA and I know that he is itching to go back.

I also thought Eva said 1:30. But no one came up with groundrules/price suggestions for the swap.

We must have a Yankee Swap too. Everyone brings a gift that pertains to cooking, such as, gadgets, magazine, linen, etc. Put a $15.00 dollar cap on the swap gift. How does that sound ladies. We are a big group and this will be fun!

MamaSue posted this earlier in the thread. And I also think Eva said 1:30 or 2:00.

Locals - Is everyone able to bring some food item and wine for us to consume together? It will be tough for those travelling, although maybe the travellers could pick up some wine?

I think $15-$20 is appropriate.

Good news-- I just reserved a room at the Custom House! I've been checking once or twice a day at https://marriott.com/reservation/availability.mi?isSearch=true&propertyCode=BOSCH (their reservation page) and something finally opened up. I was definitely planning on bringing food and I could also bring wine or other beverage.

If someone doesn't want to bring food or beverage, we will also need paper plates, napkins, cups and possibly plastic forks/knives.

I would be glad to bring either food or wine or paper/plastic goods. I'll plan on food (did we say finger foods and desserts would be appropriate?), since someone is driving me in, unless I hear otherwise. And I got my swap a while ago, so I'm all set. The time is so close......very exciting!

To the foodie explorers... The North End (Italian district) is about a 1/2 mile from the Custom House. The Salumaria Italiana is a great market for bread, cheese, etc.

Italian bakeries for sweets include:

Maria's (46 Cross St) - My favorite overall. Fantastic macaroon's, best ricotta canolli's and lots of other great stuff!
Modern (257 Hanover St) - Best for Torrone & florentine's, 2nd best for canolli's (IMHO)
Mike's - (300 Hanover St) - Most touristy, best known and a wide selection (but the cannoli's are better at Maria's & Modern because they are fresher/custom filled and better filling at those other 2 places).

There are also a couple of good liquor stores in the North End for wine, etc. V. Cirace & Son (173 North Street) is great and very close to the Salumaria Italiana. Martignetti's (64 Cross St) has a wide selection.

I will bring some type of finger food and wine. I live near Davis Sq (Ball/Powderhouse) area in Somerville and planned to take the T in (unless somone who lives nearby is driving, then if convenient, maybe I can hitch a ride).

I echo what Sarah has quoted. Salumaria is my favorite for italian meats, cheese , bread and Italian products. Maria's has it all over Mike's. Both places were on the Italian tour some of us attended for a Boston Klatch. It was really fun and I learned a few things too.:D

Ladies,

I'm looking forward to the day! I have a couple of questions:

1. Is the swap happening in the afternoon?
2. What time are you planning to head out for dinner?

I'm not sure what time I'll be joining you. Life is crazy here. If possible, I'll be there for the whole time, but I'm not sure. I did purchase a package of name tags at Staples so I know I should get there fairly early to dole them out!

Of course I can bring an appy or paper products/drinks whatever's needed.

Hi all--

I haven't been able to keep up with all of the posts to this thread, but I don't want to miss out on a detail (like a yankee swap).

It would be great if someone could start a new thread summarizing all of the details!
Thanks
Rebecca
