View Full Version : Where were you? MLK question
Hey guys how is everyone today? As you all know that today we celebrate a great man who did not have to die. I have heard many people ask where they were when JFK died. My question to all of you is Where were you when you heard the news about him being shot?
Since I am 35 and am afraid to say i was not born at the time.
Sounds silly but it is something I ponder about where people were during this time in history.

Are you talking about MLK or JFK? I'm getting my pronouns confused here.

It's interesting, to me, that I really don't remember where I was or what I was doing when MLK was killed. I can remember where I was when JFK was killed, when the Twin Towers were destroyed and when the shuttle Challenger blew up, but not MLK.
I think that comes from the fact that I was raised in a family where we were "color blind" and we treated all with equal respect and dignity. So, I was never really tuned in to MLK's message as I was already treating everyone the way he dreamed people could be treated.
I know it's not really the answer to your question, but just the reason why I don't remember where I was or what I was doing.

I'm kind of with Hammster. I can remember the JFK funeral, but I was either in kindergarten or first grade so can't remember where I was when I heard about his assassination. I remember specifically where I was when I heard about the Challenger explosion and about the Twin Towers. I know where I was when I heard JFK Jr. was missing in his plane accident and when Diana was killed in the car accident.
I can remember the funerals of both MLK and Bobby Kennedy but I don't remember where I was when I first heard about them being killed.

Now I get it. :D I had to re-read. I'm losing my marbles.
I was only 3 when JFK was shot, so I don't remember that. Nor do I remember MLK. Too young.
I love reading the "I remember" stories though - the social scientist in me I guess.

Yeah, I was 2 when MLK was shot, so no memories here either.
I think a good number of the folks on this board are too young to remember.

I was a little under a year when MLK died. The earliest assassinations that I remember were John Lennon and the attempt on Reagan, both when I was in Jr. High.

I couldn't tell you the day Martin Luther King died, but I do remember the year. I was in junior high and a couple months later just before school ended for the summer Bobby Kennedy was assassinated. The country lost three incredibly important men in that decade!
