View Full Version : Let's Talk Baby Names...

DH and I have a couple girls' names that we agree on, but we can't seem to find a "that's it!" boy's name that we agree on. Care to help inspire us? ;)
Ok, here's my criteria (DH is way less picky):
Must know how to spell it when you hear it and pronounce it when you see it
No unisex names
Prefer no trendy/top 10 names
Prefer old fashioned, time-honored names
Veer towards longer first names, but Ryan is a strong contender
Leaning towards Joseph as a middle name, for my grandfather, but not set in stone
Must work for a baby, a two-year old, a ten-year-old, an 18-year-old, a 40-year-old, etc. You get the idea. Some names are great for adults, but are hard for kids to carry, etc.
The short list is Ryan and Matthew, but I tend to wane a bit on them. When we decided on Nicholas' name it was a clear, "yup, that's it!"
I love Henry as a middle name, but was vetoed, along with Charlie, Sam and Jack as first names. But I'm the pickier one! ;)
I'd like to come up with 2-3 solid first name/middle name combinations that we love, and then let our son decide.

Another I didn't know you are pregnant! Congrats!
I like Matthew (DH's name) and my sons are Jacob and Alexander. :D
I tend to like J names ... Jared, Jonathan, Jake, Josh, Jay, etc.
Some other names I like that wouldn't have worked for us ... Grant, Parker, Jackson.

Our son's names are Timothy Walter and Jeffrey Alan.
Good for kids and adults. Longish first names. And are easy to pronounce. And....not trendy.

I'm a big fan of the name Nicholas. ;)
Hammster - BIL is a Timothy, so fits criteria, but not eligible.
I liked Joshua for awhile, but it comes and goes.
Girls' names, for us, were much easier for some reason.

We used Thomas, which I loved immediately when DH put it out for consideration. Our next-in-line boy names were: Alexander, James and Stephen.
Boy names were a lot harder for us. I don't like cutesy nicknames, so that was big for us. We do not call DS "Tommy" ever. He does like Tom, but mostly we stick to Thomas, which he likes best.

We had a horrible time picking a name for our DS. Our "short list" names were:
Ethan

Evan
Cameron
Connor
Colin
Nathan
We settled on Colin, and made the decision a mere 12 hours before he was born!

Of the ones above, I really like Connor and Alexander. You've got to be prepared for him to choose Alex for himself one day, tho.
I'm a fan of Christian, Logan and Brendan.
We have some friends w/great names for their sons: Bray, Avery, Myer
I'm child-free, so this is a fun game to play for me! My boy pets have been Jake, Ki and Bode :-)

Congrats on expecting. We had the HARDEST time with boys' names as well. It is a good thing that only 1 out of 3 of our children was a boy or else the other 2 might not have had names!
DH's rules were simple--no soap opera names so no Dylans, Hunters, Rileys, etc.
We wanted a solid classic, that could fit a boy and a grown man. We settled on Thomas Edward (which I really like!)
Other contenders were:
William (I love the shortened Will)
Benjamin
Jacob
Andrew
Alexander
Good luck!

Another Congragulations! Girls' names were always easier for us - and my DH & I couldn't agree up on boys names at all. When I was pregnant with the boys, we decided on the way to the hospital - Dan selected one of the boys' names and I selected the other.

That's my older son's name.
My younger one is named Matthew, but since we had 3 Matthew's in the immediate neighborhood & more often than not they were all in my back yard, DH nicknamed him "Duke". He's been "Duke" for so long (he's almost 21) that people ask if that is his given name. Strangely enough, it really fits him, & there's no doubt who you're talking about!
Both their middle names are James, which is DH's first name. I was so picky about the first names that I didn't care that they have the same middle name...

These were our short list for DS. Other more off the wall choices were Oscar and Milo. We actually thought we were going to go with Milo for a long while, but changed our minds as we got closer to the due date.
Good luck! Boy names are hard!
P.S. Just thought of a friend's kids who all have nice names: Brennan, Mitchell, and Reese.

My little guy is Maxwell and that's been mentioned already. We looked forever and Maxwell was not even on our short list and then all of a sudden I saw it somewhere and said, "that's it!" Hopefully it will be that way for you too.
I also like Andrew, Christopher, Connor and Kenneth.

I'm not congratulating you, since there is no official announcement. ;)
However, my vote is for Connor, and should a boy child ever exit this womb, that is the name it will have. Unless my last name is Connor, then I'm going to have a dilemma.
I also like Caden and Colin. Nathan is good, as is Matthew. My cousin just named her newborn Adam Allan, which is OK.

Have you seen this site to look up popularity by year?: Popular Baby Names (http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/popularnames.cgi)
My son's name is Brendan and we liked it over the more popular Brandon. However, because Brandon is more popular and there are many other variations (less common but growing) most people call him Brandon or if they get that its not the common Brandon then they ask how to spell. Even my MIL and step-MIL often call him Brandon - its sooooooooooo annoying. He's their only grandson, so you'd think they could learn his name.
Despite these annoyances, I love his name.

Nathan is good, as is Matthew. My cousin just named her newborn Adam Allan, which is OK.
I like Nathan too, and equally Nate, since that's always a possibility down the road.
I like James too, but wonder if it's perhaps too formal. Jim and Jimmy don't do anything for me, so it would have to stay James.
Matthew was on our very short list for quite a while, but for some reason I moved away from it for awhile. Still there though.

MissIndi - with James you could always go with Jamie - just a thought.
James was on our short list for a while and this is what DH wanted to do. I didn't like Jamie--only James, so I ended up vetoing. Then I read the Outlander series and I decided that Jamie wasn't such a bad name after all!:D
Cooper. That's our second son's name (first is Jack and that's out for you). It's funny because dh and I had trouble with girls' names. I guess we're lucky we had two boys, cause I don't know what we'd have named them if they were girls.
We had the two names Cole and Cooper as final contenders. But when we saw our baby, we both knew he was Cooper.
Good luck and congrats!

Congraulations. I have all girls but for what it is worth here are some names we considered for a boy:
Parker
Wesley
Christopher
Tucker
You will know when you here it. I could not come up with a name that worked for my youngest. Then I called a skating rink for information and when I heard the woman answer the phone and say her name I yelled to her "That's it, that is the name I will use for my baby if it is a girl" She laughed so hard and was so excited. When I told my husband the name he said "Wow that sounds perfect". By the way that did not happen until about 3 weeks before she was born, I was getting nervous!!!

What she said!!! I love the name Brenden (2 e's). I thought spelling it that way would cut down on the confusion between Brandon and Brenden. I ran into a man with a son named Brendan when I was out with the kids. He said his FIL told him "Brandon is something you do to cattle. Brendan is a good Irish name."
Lots of people call DS Brandon, but he does try to correct them (he's 4).
So, I am a huge fan of the name. I really love it. But, he was almost Jake (not Jacob, just Jake). Too bad that was vetoed by your DH!

We had an easy time with DS's name (Zander Louis) but I had a short list going of back-ups, just in case. We also liked Jonah, Simon, and Xavier.
We had two criterion for naming our kids. One being that we couldn't know anyone IRL with that name at the time. The second being that the name not be in the top 100 baby names for the previous year.

- William (I've never met a Will that wasn't cute and sweet!)
- John (Simple, but strong)

I should NOT be thinking about this right now...LOL.

Considering your last name I would chose a good Irish name. One that I love and would have named the 4th (had there been one) is Connor.
I second that! (if it's your DH's last name, too).
I also have a very Irish surname and my older brother was Sean Patrick. In 1960 Sean was considered a bizarre name - little did folks know what was in store for baby sister  .
I do like Matthew (my best friend's name) and both Matthew and Matt seem to work for any age. Funny, remember when all Henrys were over 75? Now they're all under 12. I'd rather have a name to grow into, though, then one that I'd grow out of, if that makes sense.
If there should be any announcement made in the future, I'll be so interested to hear the consensus on the name! ;) :)
I like Truett, my son is Destin Chase, everyone calls him Dustin.:(
My favorite Irish name is Liam.

My DS is a Ryan!
I must caution, that a lot of the names mentioned here are VERY popular! We picked Ryan because it was a family (last) name, and I hadn't really heard it. Then when he entered preschool, there were a ton of them!
Connor is also hugely popular here, as is Matthew and Tyler. A couple of times in DS' classes, they can't even do "Matt N." and "Matt T." because there are more than 1 of those kids with similar last names!
We found girls names harder to come up with, unless you stick to very classic names. I hated the thought of everyone in 35 years knowing just how old my daughter was because her name was so very in for a short period of time.

My nephews:

My boys names are Colin Joseph and Casey Scott, good old Irish/English/Gaelic names.
I love those names to this day (they're 24 & 22) but many often misspell
as Collin and Casey was often put on girls soccer teams until I wrote "boy" all over his application form, so I can sympathize with your strict criteria.

I like a lot of the names suggested. My sister just had a baby and she named him Evan Daniel. I have a 2 friends with small children named Evan too, so that is popular. I like it, but my sister's second contender was Nathan which I love.
My boys are:
Jeremy Richard (I always loved the name Jeremy and Richard was my grandfather's name)
Benjamin Samuel-- We had a hard time picking a boy name the second time. We had a girl name all ready and thought it would be a girl. We were still trying to decide on a boy name days before he was born.
However, now that he is here, it really fits him and I really like it. We call him Ben mostly, but I like Benjamin too.
I also love the name Bradley. Joshua and Jacob are names I also like however, being Jewish a lot of names we liked were not useable to us because we have living relatives and close friends with the name.

This thread just made me realize again how names come in and out of vogue. My son's name is John Joseph. John--for his dad and Joseph for both his grandfather's. When I was growing up, we had at least one, and usually two or three Johns in every class, organization, club, etc. Would you believe that my son has NEVER had another John in any of his classes or teams or clubs? (He is a freshman in college.) I am just amazed at that! One concern I had when we named him John was that it was such a common name. Turned out not to be!!!

Younger son is Alexander Benjamin. He will tell you that he ONLY likes the Alex part and when he was younger would correct people that dared to call him Alexander ;)

I also like Shane with your last name (but that was my late great dog's name so I'm partial :D ). Another nice Irish name is Declan. I think that's how it's spelled! I'm not planning on having kids but if I did (assuming I can't name it OOPS :p I would choose McLane as a boys name as it's a family name.

Congratulations, Missindi. I had very similar strict criteria for names too, with the added problem of wanting a name that was "known" in both English and French. And DH and I did not agree at all on boys' names either. I really, really wanted David for a first name (my grandfather's name, plus it means "beloved"), but DH said no way so we used it as a middle name. Other names I liked that were vetoed by DH:
Tristan
Gabriel
Marc
Thomas
Roman
Benjamin
Daniel
If I didn't have the French-English problem, I would have added:
Gavin
Kevin
Ethan
Joshua
The only two names we both liked were:
Lucas
Leo
If the next kid is a boy, I guess he will be Leo! ;) I wanted to use family names as middle names, so that was a bit easier, plus DH didn't seem to care much about middle names.
Do you have the Baby Name Wizard book? I like it the best of the baby name books...

I am not aware of what your last name is, but a co-worker recently had an "Irish" baby boy and named him Finnian, (I think that's how it is spelled) and they call him Finn. It was a new name to me, but I like the sound of Finn - very masculine, I think.

We have a Luke was well. With my maiden name as his middle name. I think it suits him. :) He's not Lucas, as he's quick to point out, as five year olds are apt to do. :D
Finn is the name of one of Julia Roberts' twins, I believe. The little girl is Hazel. I remember that because she was the first baby Hazel, I could remember.
I'll be interested to see what names make your final list!

Note to self: remember to ask DH about Nathan. ;)
So far, I think I'm on Matthew and Ryan. He's fine with either, but prefers Matthew. In Nicholas' school, there's actually no boys named either, out of 3 classes!
Colin (although I'm not sure it completely meets the criteria) and Lucas are swirling around my head now too...
I like Thomas, but one of our friends' named their son Thomas. I know we can too, I just try to stay away from that. ;)
I like Daniel, you don't see too many of those these days, but stepdaughter is Danielle.
Another "non-congrats" to you, Missindi ;) Of your choices, I like Matthew best.
I've been following this thread with interest because DH and I are looking for a 2-syllable boy's name that ends in "n." And yet out of all the responses on this thread so far, neither one has popped up yet! Very interesting!

(I know, not too specific! ) We have only 2 names on our list, but were worried that they are too popular right now. And yet out of all the responses on this thread so far, neither one has popped up yet! Very interesting!

Lara, okay I deseved that for trying to talk you into Brian! :D Seriously, I like Colin a lot, but it would be horrible with our last name...

I do like the name Brian but there are already 2 in our family (1 born in , 1 married in) and it seems like that's enough. :)
We also have 2 Emilys and their birthdays were almost on the same day. When my SIL was expecting my niece Emily her due date was 2/3 and my sister Emily's birthday is 2/2. I told her to make it easy on me and have the 2 Emilys with the same birthday :)

Haven't seen Owen mentioned yet, and that's another one that I like. Nicholas has a friend named Owen though, and since we're giving him our top 2-3 choices and letting him choose, I'm afraid that if Owen was one of them, he'd automatically pick it because he knows an Owen. 4-1/2 is too young to be impartial. ;)

No kids of my own yet, but I've been trying to help my friend come up with names for her baby which is due in 3 weeks. They aren't finding out the sex, but some of the boy names I like include:
Caden
Caleb
Matthew
Ethan
Isaiah
Devon
Jack (Yup...I love it too!)
Christian (no pressure, kid!)
Jonah

We named our two boys
Avery Joseph
Spencer Aidan
Joseph is a family name (grandfather, father, brother's middle name) and Spencer (DH's great uncle) Aidan (my great uncle) were uncles that were very special to us. When I was pregnant with Spencer, near the end Avery would rub my belly and call it Spencer.
I also like
Owen
Ethan

You said you liked Matthew & Ryan. My nephews are:
Matthew Ryan
Nicholas Scott and
Joshua Adam.
I've always been partial to the names David & Michael, but have no one to name.
FWIW - my sister says you can't possibly choose the right name until you have seen the child's face. She had NO names in mind when she went in to deliver. Great-grandma was pretty insistent that Nick be named Zoe ("it can work for a boy or a girl!") but she passed away before he was born, so sis didn't have to go down that road!
Good luck to you!

I have to disagree on that one. My son was going to be Gage since about my second month of pregnancy. I couldn't imagine him as anything but Gage. ;)

Nope, but I like that one too. :)
Someone mentioned Tristan, which I also like (although DH would never go for it because he'd know I was inspired by Brad Pitt's character in Legends of the Fall :D )

My sister and her DH are both teachers, and they definitely had names which they disliked by association! It actually presented some challenges for them when naming their first child.
I like William and Andrew for boys' names, although many nice ones have been listed here.

I love the name Jackson. I thought that would be my way around getting Jack as a name, but DH caught on. ;)
I love Ethan, but we seem to keep coming back to Ryan and Matthew.
Re: not naming until you see the baby... I remember Madonna had a name all picked out for her daughter Lourdes, but when she was born, she changed it because she Lourdes/Lola fit more. Meg Ryan did the same thing with her new 2-year-old daughter. She mentioned that she had planned to name her Charlotte, until she met her, and then decided she was most definitely a Daisy.
I don't know ... I think that you can grow into your name too. Nicholas is most definitely a Nicholas, and we had that name very soon after we found out that we were expecting a boy.

Not to hijack the thred, but my little cousin's name is Douglas. Instead they called him Doggie (of yes like your warm furry pal, your Dog). :D

The popularity thing can be a weird thing sometimes. For example my 3 year old has a friend named Jacob (the #1 boys name) but he is the only Jacob we've met. However I have a Declan (went from #430 to #350 last year--that might work for you Lori!) and a Dashiell (has yet to crack the top1000) and we've met or heard of 5 Decs and 4 Dashs.
for classics I like William, Thomas and Alexander. But Ryan and Matthew are great names.

My oldest is Michael with a bad middle name (grandmother's maiden name). His friends all call him Bull (his last name)
Younger son is Alexander Benjamin. He will tell you that he ONLY likes the Alex part and when he was younger would correct people that dared to call him Alexander ;) Scott is nice too
Hey tbb113 - are we related? ;) You would not believe how many of the names you mentioned we have in our family, including my maiden name. That is the list of males in our group right there. Even "Bull" which is what I call my burly DH, as in "china shop.":D

When we were naming Nicholas, I had the same criteria as I've posted, and a few months after he was born, the Top 10 Names list came out for the year (2002) and there was Nicholas... :o
When I picked him up from school today, there was a new little boy named Grayson. I love that name but 1) DH I bet wouldn't go for it and 2) doesn't meet a few of the criteria, so I'll just admire it from afar. ;)

I know you've already gotten lots of ideas, but I thought I'd throw out my favorite boy names. Some have already been mentioned. I tend to like male names that have strong, hard consonants (denoting masculinity, etc). I like
Trent (my grandpa's name)
Grant
Lucas (Luke)
Bryant
None of these names are that long but paired with middle names they would be nice, and none of them are that common in any generation (I know about a thousand Matts who are my age, and Ryan and Matthew were both in the top 15 names last year--but as has been said, the popularity thing can be weird sometimes). Good luck!

My boys are:
Aaron Benjamin
Joshua Daniel
Very traditional style names and we wanted them to be spelled the "normal" way. I always hated not being able to find my name on those goofy souvenirs as a kid, so it's fun now for them to find their names on differen things.
We named them for family members who had passed away... using their first initials, which is traditional for Jewish families. So, their names have an extra special meaning to us.

It is funny about the popularity of names. I'm a Kristi and until about 3 years ago, I had never and I mean never, run into another one. Now I work with two women who both have daughters named Kristi. I have also seen it several times on tv, and apparently some porn star has the name too....I can assure you that I'm not HER! LOL. The ones I've seen are all different ages too, so it's not like it's ever appeared to be in vogue at any time........

When choosing a boy's name it had to go with the middle name "Norman" (my Dad's name who passed away when I was 15). We also have a 2 syllable last name and struggled with a name that worked for a baby, child and adult.
We named him Chadrick Norman. He grew up as Chad, continues as Chad, but in business and anything legal he prefers his full name of Chadrick. He loves it and it suits him to a "T".

Somewhat off topic, but I mentioned this thread aloud to my fiance when I first saw the other day, and he grabbed our baby name book (he was the one who purchased it, at one of those store closing $2 clearance sales) and started answering with stupid names based on t.v. characters (Kirk, Gobo, Kermit, Fozzie, Red, etc.). Needless to say, I'm not passing any of those names along.
But we actually got past that and he read through the boys names aloud and we discussed some names for real. So even though we aren't going to start trying for baby until 2008, we've already narrowed down our options for boys names:
Nathan
Brandon
Ethan
Gavin
Ryan
Didn't realize until after we made the list that all the kid's names end with the same sound. Goes well with our last name too.

You gals are sooo lucky you can choose ANY name you want! Living in Montreal means that you have to pick a name that doesn't sound ridiculous in french! And...if your husband has a french-canadian last name that makes it even harder to pick something that fits! No babies in the works yet but this will definitely be a problem one of these days!

Just yesterday I heard a new one that I really like, Tyson or Tysen. I've always liked Ty as a nickname, but I'm not a fan of Tyler. A friend of ours also recently had a baby and named their son Jameson- which I love, it could be shortened to Jamie at some point too. (I like names that can be shortened or lengthened at will :) )

My sons name is Kellen. It's a Gaelic name. I think it means mighty warrior.
My husband and I laughed when he was a toddler.. because he definitely matched the meaning of his name... and we said that perhaps we should have chosen a name the other way around... pick a meaning, and then choose the name based on the meaning. But we figured that the name with the meaning "nice quiet boy" is probably Fred.. or something like it. (no offense to the Freds out there)
Anyhow.. it's Kellen Patrick. My husbands name is Patrick, he is Scottish, and it's his family's tradition to give the first son the father's name, as a middle name. I loved the name Henry too.. and we thought he would be a Henry, until my husband changed his mind when I was 6 months pregnant. I was furious, but now I can't imagine Kellen as a Henry.
Interesting. I love hearing all these names. I'm past having any more babies, but it's fun to think about names anyway. Just to throw this into the mix, at ds's preschool, there are a number of Aidans, Cadens and Nathans. Notice any pattern-ens?
