Last night, I spilled my glass of Merlot in the middle of our living room on our white carpet.
I immediately used a "trick" that I've heard about with putting white wine on the red wine stain....it did lighten it somewhat, but did not remove it.
I have a spot bot, and I have not been very impressed with it for removing stains. So, I'm thinking of trying this product called Wine Away: http://www.amazon.com/Wine-Away-12-oz/dp/B00020V8YU
But, before I go to Linens 'N Things over my lunch hour, I thought I would check to see if anybody else has tried this product or has any tried and true ways of making red wine stains disappear.
I'm so mad at myself!

I'm sorry to hear about your stain. :( I worry about red wine stains, too.
I don't know anything about Wine Away, but do you have this at home?

I've used it on dog stains and it worked great. Let us know what works for you!

I've had good luck with Wine Out. In fact, I think I'm due for another bottle. I broke in my new white carpet by spilling a whole glass of red wine in the middle of the living room. The Wine Out did the trick. I also followed it up by using some Oxy Clean the next day.
Good luck!

I have removed old stains from white carpeting using a strong mixture of regular oxyclean and water. I'm talking brown soda stain that were a couple of years old and I had tried shampooing and other methods.

I use Gonzo it works so well (I have a light green carpet). Actually we had this stain in the carpet (paint) the painters/builders had spilled paint and I bought Gonzo and its gone (paint was there since the house was built a year plus ago. You can get it in Home Depot Bed Bath & Beyond and I think Linen & Things.
PS Works very well in clothing too.
I've used hydrogen peroxide successfully when we were out of Woolite OxyDeep. I'm pretty sure it's the active component created when you add water to Oxyclean.

When I was in Napa about a year ago, my boss spilled some red wine on her expensive silk blouse while we were out wine tasting, and the guy immediately grabbed a bottle of Wine Away and used it on the stain - came out completely, no sign of a spill in sight. He sold several bottles right there on the spot - it was great advertising for the product!
So yeah, it does work, and well, from what I've seen.

When I spilled a glass of red wine on my light colored oriental rug I searched the internet and tried a trick I found there. Mix hydrogen peroxide with a few drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid and spray/dab the solution until the stain comes out. It worked for me -- but since the rug has colored designs that may be helping to hide any remains of the stain. Can't vouch for how it would be on a white carpet.
Good luck and please let us know if you use Wine Away and if it works.

I can tell you that I wouldn't use anything except Wine Away. We had a party several years ago where lots of red wine was spilled on very light carpet. Wine Away removed every single stain to the point of never knowing it was there. It works so well that you actually watch it disappear while applying. Some of the stains were weeks old before I found them and they still came out.
Well worth the money!

I did buy a bottle of Wine Away over my lunch break and went home and applied it to the spot. And....it worked! Well worth the money - it took two applications, but you wouldn't know that anything was spilled there. I am definitely going to buy another bottle of this to keep on hand.

Now you can appreciate why I'm partial to vodka. ;)

The first thing I thought when I read this was "can I use this on my four year old"?
Anyway - glad it came out! :)
