View Full Version : Refinishing brass?

We've got a shower door that we'd love to get rid of but don't want to do the tile work associated with taking it out completely and replacing it with a curtain. Unfortunately, it's got a brass finish. I'd much rather have a silver or brushed nickel finish on it.

I see that there are products/processes for refinishing brass so that it doesn't look brass. Has anyone tried them?

If it looks bad, we'd rather just replace the door with another door!

Thanks!

Most brass has a lacquer (sp?) over it to prevent tarnish (like lamps, door knobs, etc.).

I have a brass bed that is not treated and it is a pain. THere are cleaners on the market that you rub onto the brass and polish and they shine up well.
If you keep it up, it's not hard but the bed...OYE! I'll never do it again.

I've used spray paint designed for metal surfaces on a few projects... lamps, candlesticks, garden furniture. Most often I've used what gives a hammered-metal black finish or burnt copper. I don't know how well this would work for you if the door frame isn't temporarily removable from the tile to do the spraying; and I would consider coating them with a clear finish given the humid environment if I were to attempt this.

Good luck! I'm interested to see what you do.
