View Full Version : Do you have a favorite body wash for the shower?

We recently, at what seemed like vast expense to me, had the shower tile detailed and and the grout repaired. The fellow said that cleaning would be easier and the grout repairs would last longer if we switched to a liquid or gel type body wash in place of the bar soap we have always used. We are willing to give alternatives a try.

My local grocery store carries body washes in these brands, most of which have multiple products -- Ivory, Old Spice, Axe, Dial, Olay, Tone, Dove, Zest, SoftSoap.

Sooo -- I have three questions:

1. If you have a body wash that you like, what is it? (Doesn't have to be one of the brands noted above).

2. Do you also use it on your face?

3. If you live with a spouse, SO, or other roommate, do you use the same body wash?

Thanks!

Kay

I love, love the brand Korres for shower gels - unfortunately it's a bit pricey and sold at Sephora, which means shipping costs. I also love the Sanctuary products sold at Target. I buy Bath and Body Works Stuff from their sale bins, too.

I do not use these on my face, and my spouse uses regular old soap. The shower gels/scrubs to me are a treat and a luxury.

I like Bath & Body Works mainly because I never got tired of the flavors.

I generally stock up when they have a sale -- I haven't noticed any particular difference between brands except for the smell -- a shower gel is a shower gel in terms of what it does to my body.:D

I pick up products from all over and don't really have any particular favorites. Right now, I have an assortment of products in my shower that I rotate through, including a Get Fresh body wash, a Bath & Body Works creamy body wash, and shower gels from Golden Door Spa and Fruits & Passion. But I will pick up anything that smells good. :)

I do not use body wash/shower gel on my face. I wash my face with Cetaphil. And DH does not use my body washes, although he does have his own (Carolina Herrera for Men) that he will use on occasion. Most of the time, though, he uses bar soap.

My new favorite is the orange one from Trader Joes. It's only $1.99 for a huge bottle. :) I don't use it on my face though and DH doesn't use it at all. He tends to use bar soap.

1. Bath & Body works for me!! I just love their variety of scents. In the winter I use the creamy body wash for more moisture; regular shower gel at other times. I also stock up when there's a sale. Everyone in my family always gets me some for my birthdays and Christmas, so I never run out!

2. I don't use it on my face. Not that I've ever tried and didn't like it... I've just been using other facial care products that I like for that purpose.

3. Just DH and me... he only uses Jergens bar soap, so it' just me using the B&BW stuff. (Which is fine- more for me!)

I get Oil of Olay body wash in the huge bottle from Costco. It lasts forever and keeps my skin silky soft all winter! I have different cleansers for my face. DH sticks with bar soap-when I suggested he try the stuff in the bottle I found him scrubbing his body with shampoo!!

Susan, I started buying this after you talked about it on another thread. DH and I both use it and love it. :) Can't beat the price!

Kay, Of the brands you've listed, I've used Olay. It was fine. I really think all shower gels are about the same. I've used Bath and Body Works products in the past and liked them, too. Like pp, I like being able to get a variety of scents. I don't use shower gel on my face, I use products made specifically for faces as my skin is pretty sensitive. DH usually uses whatever gel is in the shower. If it's a particularly "girly" scent, he'll grab a bar of soap.

There are a couple of supermarket brands I like- mostly I just buy Suave in some light scent. But, I also like some of Bath and Body Works and The Body Shop scents, vanilla-based ones in particular, and my very favorites are from Philosophy: Cinnamon Buns, the Gingerbread Man, and whatever their mint one is called (not the holiday peppermint one, the regular mint). There's usually a bottle of Philosophy body wash under the tree for me at the holidays each year and it lasts me awhile. :)

I use it on my body only. DH uses body wash as well (would probably prefer soap but I hate cleaning the soap residue in the shower), and chooses his own.

Glad you like it. I'm convinced their products are the same as Alba for a quarter of the price. I've used lots of expensive shower gels that I've liked but this one is just so darn cheap. I live about 75 miles from TJs and I stock up on it every time I go.

I love Dove. The cucumber melon is fantastic. I have very dry skin, and Dove products and Aveeno lotion out of the shower keep me from having itchy skin (and I've tried everything!). Bath and Body Works products in general make my skin feel awful.

I never use it on my face though, I have one bottle of face wash (also Aveeno) in the shower, and one on the counter next to the sink.

I love to have a variety of body washes on the go at any one time. My current favourite is Neroli Jasmin Shower Gel from The Body Shop. It is fragranced with neroli, jasmine, warm vanilla orchid, and sandalwood. I don't use it on my face and I don't share. :)

I like trying different ones, also from small producers, and have never gone wrong with anything I've gotten at Whole Foods. I think I must like the scenting better in natural products. My real favorite, though, is from Origins - "Jump Start", and it really is invigorating. I don't buy it that often, though, as it's too pricey.

DBF spends a lot of money on this kind of stuff, and his favorite shower gel? Yup, that same buck.99 bottle from TJ's! I accidentally bought the buck.99 stuff from Whole Foods, and was corrected: That was the WRONG cheap shower gel, lol. We use the same bottle except when he buys Aveda - I wouldn't feel right using it.

While I wouldn't use shower gel on my face, I would think you'd do well with Kiss My Face or Nature's Gate liquid soap for both face and body (I use them on my face). I think either would foam up well in a mesh nylon sponge.

I love love love H2O Plus (http://www.h2oplus.com). They used to have stores all over, now they have stores only in a few cities and do the rest of their sales online.

I like the "water" related line that comes in shades of blue, and my absolute hands-down favorite is the Clearwater scent. The fruity and spa lines are good, too, but I like those ocean-y scents.

I do use shower gel on my face when I shower.

I've used both the Dove and Olay on my body. I use Clinique on my face. My sons use Old Spice (or the Target/Longs equivalent).

If you make the switch...you need to buy a poof for yourself. I have no idea what my sons use (I think the older uses his hands and the younger uses a loofah or he shares my poof and doesn't tell me :p )

Ooh Cumulus, I'll have to try this! I didn't know they had different scents. My skin is really dry in the winter so I use Dove bar soap mostly.

I like the Bath & Body Works Apothecary line, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Mandarin something or other (Ginger?) were the latest I had. Mostly because I'm a geek and I like to 'decorate' my bathroom with Apothecary Shop looking stuff. Their regular line is great too. I don't use it on my face, and I don't think DH uses it except when he takes a bath - then he dumps like a bottle of it in the tub to simulate bubble bath

I'm a big fan of that line too. Marriott hotels carry the Orange Ginger products, but my favorite scent is the Jasmine Vanilla, although they only make it in a lotion.

I use Olay Complete Body Wash for extra dry skin (which I have). I get it in bulk from Costco, and Target has a decent generic for it as well. My fiance doesn't use it as well, but because he's got sensitive skin. Back before we lived together and he just visited for a night, he used it and said it was fine.

I like the creamy texture, and in fact when I need to touch up shave (use that Veet bladeless stuff most of time), I just use the Olay straight. So it saves me from buying shaving cream too.

I don't use it on my face, guess I could I was just always taught you don't use same stuff on face as body.

I love using Neutrogena's Rainbath Shower & Bath Gel. I get a huge bottle at Sam's Club, and it has a handy pump on it as well.
I have purchased the smaller bottle of shower gel and their lotion and given it as gifts. (lots of compliments)
I do not use it on my face (I'm a Mary Kay Girl for my face) however it is wonderful to use to shave with.
Also it has a very nice light smell.

Oh that's funny you should say this. My husband, who has about 3 hairs left on his head, came home from a business trip raving about a bath and body works volumizing shampoo that had been in his Marriott hotel room (which he swears works for all the good it does him :D ) . I had to go out and get it for him and now that's all he uses. It makes his hair smell very nice at least!

I love the h2O brand, too! I always find them at Marshall's or TJMaxx. I used to use Body Shop bath gels, but found thes to be great and a whole lot less! DH is a soap guy, but is known to use the gel when he finishes the soap and get's in the shower without a new bar.

I LOVE the Lander Brand 3-in-1 sold at WalMart. It is a copycat of Philosophy's 3-in-1. It is $2.47 for a huge bottle. It comes in Lavender, Cream Caramel, Coconut, Orange, Pink Grapefruit and Apple. I don't use it on my face. I really love the way it smells.

Really? I'm pretty sure I have some Jasmine Vanilla shower gel in my B&BW shelf. I don't know if their semi annual sale is going on anymore, but if it is, go check it out...you may be able to find some Jasmine Vanilla stuff there. If not, next sale's in June!

Yes, I've seen them at TJM, but the problem with that is that the supply is not consistent, and of course you don't get access to the full range of products. Every time I've seen h2o in those stores, it's always stuff that's been discontinued. :P

P.S. My favorite daytime hand cream is also h2o ... it's the "Hand and Nail Cream" that's part of their Spa line. Their Lip Mender lip balm is also the best I've found. It is NOT "medicated" so that your lips tingle, it's very soothing and very moisturizing. These two products make winter bearable for me! (The idea that something that makes your skin tingle "tells you it's working" is marketing spin ... it's actually a sign that it's causing irritation.)

I love using Neutrogena's Rainbath Shower & Bath Gel. Also it has a very nice light smell.I use both of these products... The Olay Complete by itself in the winter, when my skin is dryest, and mixed with Neutrogena Rainbath in the summer. I use other stuff on my face.

I like the B&BW stuff (in the summer), and my favorite is lemongrass sage, which has been discontinued.:(

DH uses Dove soap -- used to use Dial, until I pointed out that he was flaking!;) He doesn't use a puff, though.

OMG, you're right! I just checked out their website, and I see they now have body wash, shampoo, conditioner, foam bath, and hand soap in the Jasmine Vanilla - I'm pretty sure they're fairly new, as I've never been able to find anything but the lotion before. Thank you!

How do you use body wash? with a washcloth, a "scrubbie" or just on your hands? It's seems more wasteful than bar soap....
And how can soap be bad for your tile?

funniegrrl
01-26-2007, 10:19 AM
Any thing you'd use with bar soap will work with body wash. I don't know that it's more/less wasteful, but many types (like the h2o+ that I use) are much cleaner feeling that bar soap, they don't leave "soap scum."

Personally, I like to use bath gloves (http://www.h2oplus.com/retail2002/productdetails.aspx?productid=200-03072-000) in the shower. You can usually pick up cheaper versions at places like Target, too.

I can't get going in the AM without my Satsuma Shower Gel from the Body Shop. I use their Vanilla or Oceanus gels at night to wind down. DH will use the Satsuma gel, but not the others as he says they are "too girlie".

I have never used them on my face, though.

I have found that I waste a lot of it if I have to apply by hand. With a washcloth, it's less, but still seems to take more than a pouf. Only a tiny bit is necessary with a pouf.

aggie94

I agree - I think the poufs work best with shower gels. A tiny bit creates a LOT of lather.

Stuff that I buy at Target: Aveeno or Dove

Other stuff: H20! Love it. I have a bunch of different shower gels; I'm not sure I could pick a favorite.

My husband will use shower gel occasionally, but otherwise uses soap. He does really like the Aveeno.

I don't use it on my face.

I use a cheap nylon "poof" - the shower/bath is the one space where I don't want "natural": wash cloths, loofas, anything that makes a cozy home for bacteria. But you certainly could use a washcloth. I think it would be super wasteful to use just your hands; as others have said, a little bit goes a long way on a "poof".

It seems most of what we call "soap" generically is detergent (notice the lables don't actually use the word soap) so I'm guessing it's the detergents that are bad for the tile? I know our plumber suggested we use only natural laundry soap.

I don't know how or why, but bar soap leaves a HUGE amount of soap scum and residue on tile (or fiberglass). I could clean everyday and not get the gunk off when we used bar soap.

Since switching to liquid, the shower stays clean much much longer. And I also think the type of water you have affects it too, I just can't remember if it is hard or soft water that is worse.

I have a variety... Aveeno for the dry winter months, Caswell-Massey Lavender (gift from Mom, love it), and a sandalwood gel I got relatively inexpensively from Whole Foods. Of course Aveda makes some fabulous stuff, but it's quite expensive.

Cetaphil is the only cleanser I use on my face.

I have a thing about not smelling like food; I just don't like things that are citrus-scented, vanilla-scented, etc. I love lilac and lavender.
