View Full Version : Should I call my hair stylist?

I have gone to the same stylist for probably 4 1/2 yrs. She is nice enough, but I never really got close to her. She always seemed bored with people.
We have moved and now my drive to her is 30 mins. where it used to be 20 mins. I also feel like she was in a rut with my hair. I have found someone good who is 5 mins. away.
Do I need to call the former stylist and tell her I found someone closer? Of course it's always awkward when it comes to leaving a stylist.

I would say no, you don't need to call... this is not like a breakup, she has lots of other customers.

I would probably call and just say you found someone who is closer. I don't think you have to call though.

I agree with ClaraB. I don't think you need to call.

I agree. If you're not close, you don't need to call.
If you were friends, that would obviously be a different situation, and I'd suggest sending in a note.

When I left my stylist two years ago, I wrote a note. I had moved and was driving an hour one way just to see her and when the price of gas went up I couldn't do it anymore. I did enjoy this woman, but she was also in a rut with my hair and I like my hair much better now.
Since I wrote the note, when I had a special event in her area, I felt that I could call her and have my hair styled by her. We had a nice reunion, my hair looked nice for the event and I hadn't burned any bridges.
However, if you weren't close to her and will probably never go back you owe her nothing.

I'd write a short note thanking her for her care & attention over the years, explaining you've moved and needed to find someone closer. Something could go wrong with the new person & it's nice to have a fall-back in a pinch.

I like Valerie's note.
and Valerie, your siggy always make me giggle. :D
I think the note's a nice way to handle it. I was going to say you don't need to call unless it will make YOU feel more comfortable. But the note sort of takes care of it.

I like Valerie's idea. But if you don't think you will ever go back to her then nothing is necessary, especially since you weren't close.

Now why didn't I think to write a note? Great idea. I just feel I went to her for so long I owe her an explanation. I did like my hair for quite some time.
It seems it's just a good idea to try some one new every few years...plus the drive factor.
Thanks for your great ideas.

As a stylist, there is nothing better than hearing from someone who has left your chair. A note is wonderful. I always, always acknowledge the note and respond with a "Thank You" and you are always welcome back in my chair. Several do come back! I offer thier formula if they color. It is just good business practice. This is such a personal occupation and Hairstylists do have feelings . I know for 26 years I have tried to do my best and I hope my clients feel that! Just a little insight from this side of the chair!
