Trying to plan what to get DBF for Valentine's Day.

One of his favorite things is coffee. I was planning to get him a Starbucks gift card for Valentine's day.

He doesn't make a lot of money -- usually doesn't have much cash on hand so I thought it would be nice for him to have the card available whenever he wanted to stop for coffee.

Does this seem cheap or impersonal to "just" get the gift card? Like I said, I know his budget is pretty tight, so I'm not expecting anything huge from him.

Am I overthinking this too much?!?

Any opinions would be appreciated!!

Ellen

((Things were sure a lot easier when I was single on Valentine's Day!!!! :) ))

Oh no....I hope the majorty say it isn't cheap as I got DH a Peet's gift card for Valentines day. :o I thought he would love it since he recently discovered Peet's and it is only a few blocks from where he works.

I think it's sweet!

Plus, everytime he stops there for a java, he'll think of you :)

that is pretty much what I always get my SO for Valentine's day. We are not big into Valentine's day, and he always appreciates a gift card to his favorite coffee shop.

I don't think it's cheap at all. If you want to make it more "personal" you could also get him a travel mug to go with it--or maybe a baked good you make yourself that he could enjoy with his cuppa. Just a thought. I think it's thoughtful--he ENJOYS coffee.

I think it's a very thoughtful gift, and not cheap at all. My DH goes giddy whenever he gets one because it's so much easier than running to the ATM on the way to work if he doesn't have cash for coffee.

I think its a great idea! I would get that for DBF, actually he'd love a GC from Dunkin Doughnuts or fru fru Starbucks. I even bought him a pound of ground Starbucks coffee as a stocking stuffer. At least you know he is going to use it right? I know that you can also recharge the GC for Starbucks too;)

I'm with the rest: if it's something he enjoys and is a luxury for him on his budget, it's very thoughtful. I also agree with TKay - my inclination would be to wrap it in some homemade cookies or a coffee mug or such.

This is what I was thinking. It's a very thoughtful gift, and if you want something to wrap a travel mug would be a good idea. But even the card alone is still nice. :)

I think it's a great idea. I know I always welcome gift cards to Dunkin Donuts or Wawa for my coffee. It's much appreciated! Your DBF will love it!

Another vote for a nice and very thoughtful gift. I don't think it's cheap at all. I think the stigma with Valentine's Day is that many people often feel that they have to go all out and spend a small fortune on supposedly romantic gifts - the huge bunch of roses, diamonds, big boxes of chocolates, etc. The nicest and most romantic gifts, IMHO, are the ones that are truly heartfelt and thoughtful. So, if your DBF loves coffee and enjoys having that every morning, I think a gift card for Starbucks is fantastic, especially if it is something that isn't quite in his budget right now.

I think you got your DBF a wonderful present. I would be thrilled with a gift like that.

I think it is a great idea. I am not a big believer in the necessity to spend a lot of money just because Hallmark and the retailers say we should. You could make the gift more personal by adding some homemade biscotti or his favorite baked treat to go with it.

I think it's a wonderful idea. During college I received a grocery store gift card from my step-mom for something, I don't even remember what and it was such a relief to not have to worry about groceries for a few weeks. Not only did she give me money but she gave me a break in stress.

IMO I think useful gifts are the best gifts. Another suggestion for those w/ipods, how about gifting a book or a GC? I sure wish I had gotten that for Xmas instead of 48 batteries and a bug killer from my dad...or golf lessons...

I'm with the other folks here. Gift cards to a favorite place are always thoughtful. We don't go to a lot of fuss for V-Day. A meaningful card and a small, inexpensive gift is about it. It would seem strange NOT to do something, but to me (us) it seems like a "marketing" holiday, or some type of contest to see who can outdo everyone else. We just don't "buy" into that. I would much rather that my husband show me love and appreciate every day (as I"m sure he would like that from me) rather than on a day just because the media/marketing people say we should.

Anyway, I'm sure he'll love his gift card and all the coffee. The travel mug and some baked goodies is a nice touch too!

Happy Valentines Day!

as i posted in another thread, my DH brought me home 2 roses in a nice vase. The next morning it was on its side - my cats! now I remember why I don't buy flowers all the time. oh, well. small price to pay.

I think this was my biggest ''hang up'' about the whole thing -- but I know the gift card is something he'll use and appreciate.
I want to thank everyone for their advice!

I LOVE getting Starbucks gift cards, as do all my friends- we were recently saying that it is the best all around gift- you can't go wrong!

Happy V-Day everyone!
