Our first snow day in about 5 years! Right now the snow doesn't look too bad, but it is supposed to go on all day. I am going to walk over to school and pick up some IEPs to work on and make a fire. Now, what to cook?

Snow starting here around midnight so tomorrow will be a snow day for me. I was just looking through my recipes so I can pick up stuff after work and cook up a storm tomorrow.
My choices thus far....
Chicken Mulligatawny - EW
Warm Chicken Sausage and Potato Salad - EW
Red Curry Chicken with Basil - ?
Thai Chicken and Coconut Soup - CL
I've got a freezer full of chicken breasts.

*snort* I read that as "pick up some IEPs to make a fire."

Today, I was in charge of bringing snacks to our staff meeting. I have a tray of cut veggies with hummus and a pan of the Farms Brownies.

Now, should I cook, or grade?!

We had three days off last week, plus a two-hour delay ... and now today is off, and tomorrow is looking iffy. I'm supposed to be assessed for Praxis next week, and my lesson plans are WAY off -- and so are my students. ACCK!

cooking is always more fun than grading!
and where in Columbus are you? it might not have been worthwhile to drive to work today, but it could be worthwhile to make a trip for brownies ;) :D

I'm in Delaware county - where we have a "heavy snow" advisory rather than a "winter storm" advisory. Wheeeee! We never DID have sushi downtown, and they've discontinued their Monday-cheap-sushi thing. :(

Vbak, what part of Indiana are you in? I'm a couple miles west of Indy. We were supposed to get a lot of snow, and the sleet and freezing rain was supposed to stay south of us. For the last hour or so we've been getting the frozen rain. Ugh. I planned on staying home today because I figured school would get canceled...I haven't planned what I'm cooking yet though ;)

It's a snow day here too - the second one of the school year, so now school will end on June 5th (instead of the 1st). I don't think it's all that bad out, but there is wind and blowing snow, so that's probably the reason for cancellation - not the accumulation.

I'm in NW IN, about 40 miles e of Chicago, and about 3 miles s of Lake Michigan-Indiana Dunes Country. Well, the DH made the fire, but I have yet to start writing IEPs. I think I will make some good 'ol chicken soup today and bread if I feel like it. Enjoy your day off.

Too funny,Mkate, about the IEPs.

Well it's snowing again here in Denver as well. It's not much as of yet and they are saying only 1-2 inches today and 1-2 inches tomorrow but when we had the major blizzard the morning of I was hearing 6-8 inches and by early afternoon it had gone to 10-12 inches. I don't trust these guys!

The good news is that I've taken tomorrow off as a ski day so I'm going to be able to lay down some fresh tracks on a powder day. :D :D :D

I'm in Delaware county, too! I shoveled about 6" of snow from the driveway this morning, and I'll probably have to do it again this afternoon. I read you other post about Trader Joe's - do you go to the Sawmill or Easton TJ's?

on a side note... I go to both of those TJs :)

The snow is expected to hit us tomorrow. Good thing I wasn't planning a Valentine's dinner out. I've called DH three times to see if we have gas for the snowblower, but I haven't connected with him. I just sent him an email. We may be shoveling together. :p

Lauren, did you see this? Boston may get nothing. :(

I'm still hanging out in the 12-18" zone though so I have my fingers crossed.

The University of Illinois' Urbana-Champaign campus is closed today for the first time since January 1979. The weather is downright wicked. Every couple of hours, we open the garage and think about trying to shovel, give it a couple of minutes, and then give up. It is so windy that it seems futile to shovel because it's just going to blow back. I don't think I've ever seen a snowstorm with wind like this before. To give you an idea of what we're dealing with - this is my neighbor's porch:
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b7dc32b3127cce82444c6ea7cb00000026108Aat2zFo0Yto

and we only had about five inches of snow at that point.

A few feet away, there is bare grass:

Candace, isn't that the weirdest thing when those drifts happen? One of our storms this season (I have no idea which) did the same thing. Unfortunately, some of those drifts ended up being 6ft right over a highway.

Hey Robin, I'm in CO too! :D

Vbak: Before I got sick of the snow this winter, I was all about the soups. Chunky potato soup, beef stew, corn chowder.

Oh, and can't forget the big steaming mug of hot chocolate.

I noticed that in one of your other posts. We have a number of us here. Actually, slawrence is trying to organize a group trip to A Seasoned Chef which is a cooking school in Denver. Keep your eyes peeled. :)

I just started snowing there this afternoon. They let the schools out 2 hours early, but it hadn't even started snowing at that point! I was subbing in the library, so I was happy to get out a little early and hit the grocery store and stock up on beer. So, our fridge is full of beer, which means we're ready! :D

Likely a snow day tomorrow if we get anything close to what they are calling for - anything from 6-20 inches! If we get the wind too, that will probably mess up Thursday too.

We'll see......could be big or maybe it will be a big ado about nothing.....you just never can tell.............

LOL Alysha - I made sure I stopped at the State Store this morning to cover us for wine for the next few days. :)

We have about 5" so far and are due to get between 12-14". We only had 1/2 a day today and I'm sure there will be no school at all tomorrow. I went to Wegman's this morning and was surprised that it wasn't busy. The checkout person told me they were swamped yesterday.

The good thing is that it isn't bitterly cold so we can at least go play outside tomorrow for awhile.

Not a ton of drifting snow here, but it's been snowing steadily since about 4 AM.

You'll have to look at the numbers on the right in this photo - the only ruler I could find was an L-shaped one. Zero is on the ground on the right hand side.

All depends on my starting point. Easton is closer to work, Sawmill is closer to home -- and to Whole Foods! ;)

I had that choice to make this morning, too. (I'm also in Ohio -- along I-75). I chose to stay home, despite being expected at work and I'm glad I did. I talked to a coworker who said they sent everyone home early. I may get teased, but better warm and safe than stressed out on a 15 mile country road commute to work! I'd say we have probably a foot of snow -- hard to tell because it's blowing. And we're under a blizzard warning, so it's not likely to be great tomorrow.

So, I baked a loaf of bread. A batch of nutty for oats cookies will be in the oven shortly. We had lots of leftovers, so we're grazing on those for dinner. I'm going to chop some veggies for minestrone tomorrow.

So you are the ones who bought all the beer and wine and left nothing on the shelves for me ;) I went to the Store right after work and wow, those shelves were empty - and I am talking about a huge grocery store. Thank God our freezer and pantry are very well stocked and we should make it through a couple of days

Sawmill Rd is just a little bit closer to my house, but an easier drive (most hours of the day) from where I live, so that is where I go. Besides, WF is right there now, and I love to go to Anderson's, too. Best prices on produce, and a great wine selection!

In addition to shoveling snow today, I made Moomie's famous hamburger buns for the first time. They came out great, and couldn't have been easier. They also looked as nice as any bakery bun!

And yet another snow day! We got our calls last night which is very nice thing. I wrote my 2 IEPs yesterday, so I think I will hang out in the kitchen today. Bread is definitely on the menu.

Everything is calm right now. Hard to say how much snow we got because of the blowing. However, our school district covers lots of drifted over country roads.

Well, at least 500+ of them! :)

The call came at 5:05 a.m.

The kids will have fun with the snow...I guess those Valentine's Day parties will be postponed!

It doesn't look that bad outside - about 4 inches. I'm surprised they closed, after the two days last week.

I was a little surprised too. I was driving home from Oakland Schools last night about 7:30 though, and nothing looked like it had been plowed, even though it had been snowing since 3pm. I really thought they'd be more on top of snow removal. *shrug*

Ah well - now I have time to put up new blinds in my guest room and finish cleaning.

We're in today.

The kids are bitter. The joys of being students at a residential school facility  Everything around us is closed down. I had a student in my period 1 class this morning tell me that we are the only school open in Ontario. Not true, of course, but if that's the rumour amongst the kids, no wonder they're bitter!

I'll just be happy when the shovelling stops. I'm afraid the plow will have been by before I get home from work.

We're in Season 3 :D Almost up to Staycation. I love that episode. If I'd ever remember to take it with me to J's, we'd be further ahead.

Here's one for you: I stayed at his place last night, shovelled to my car at 7 this morning, and went home to shovel out for the cleaning lady  There are advantages to either his being able to drive, or living under 1 roof.

Our second snow day here in two weeks. The one last week was on Tuesday and it should've been on Monday (go figure). Anyway, it's cold (about 10) and snowing quite steadily - don't know how much we've gotten, but the weather.com site is showing that the wind will turn around from the north later today and then we will get what they call lake effect snow on top of the regular stuff. I'll have to go out and shovel later (as I skipped going to the gym!) for my exercise. My son (15) will be bored by noon (has already checked with friends down the street to see if they can get together),and my step daughter (16) is still asleep.

Thinking of making some nice chocolate chip cookies and then a nice turkey soup for dinner. I'm glad I don't have to go out! Good luck to all in the path of this storm - especially anyone living in the Oswego, NY vacinity!

Off to shovel now. :D Only one winter of living under separate roofs for you though!

It's been coming down all day. It's really light and fluffy because it's so cold. I have no idea how much we're going to get since we're so close to the coast.
