A live camera of a watering hole in Africa. I think people operate the camera because the angles and zooms change.
Right now there's a bunch of baboons but I've seen zebra, giraffe, crocs, monkeys, birds, leopards, elephants and lions to name a few.

There's something there now but I can't make out what it is and there seems to be fluorescent-type lights coming from the water...
BTA: There must be some sort of light that I'm seeing reflected at the edge of the water (just figured out it's probably the moon)-not some animal. Been there over 30 minutes and haven't seen a creature but it's very addictive!

Ooooohh! I was just going to post to ask what that was! I think you're right! It's pretty cool! I haven't seen any animals yet though....
ETA that the light is moving, so it must be the moon!:D

What I see looks like the reflection of whatever light they have set up for the camera, not the moon. I haven't seen any animals yet, but it IS addictive! :) I have seen some bugs zooming by the camera, and something in the water (a fish maybe? a turtle?), but I'm going to keep watching! And the sounds are very noisy! - I can't imagine being there and trying to sleep at night.

I'm in AZ so daylight viewing hours for me are in the early am until about 10 or so.
Earlier today there was a huge group of baboons. Two were trying to mate. Two were fighting and a mama was carrying her baby on her back.
Here's some screencaps of animals past:

I checked the Bear cam and they are cute!! :)
I have had the Africam up though all afternoon. Haven't seen a thing. I leave it on even when I leave the room. DH works right next to me and has been glancing over to check it out as well. While I was in the kitchen making some hot chocolate, he came out and said, "I have come to the conclusion that there ARE no animals in Africa!" :D :D
Maybe they'll come out in the daytime.... looks like all of Kristi's shots were daytime shots. But where are all the nocturnal animals?? I'm still addicted though....

I saw the streaks too, but I thought they may have been fireflies or other various bugs. There were quite a few. If they were shooting stars....GREAT! :D I like that idea better.
I've had this screen up and running all evening off to the side of my monitor. Other than the fireflies/shooting-stars, I haven't seen a thing. NOTHING. I've heard animal sounds change quite often. Aren't these animals early-risers??? :D

I wonder if this a resort of some kind?
I remember when we lived in Arizona, our condo backed up into "wild desert" We could see javilinas go through the area pretty regularly.
And at home in WI, my parents always have deer in their backyard. Which is tough to understand seeing as how they live in town and not the country. Dang deer are very motivated to come in to town.

It is a resort. I looked it up. I'd love to go there! It's the largest privately held nature preserve in South Africa - it covers 33,000 acres, and shares a fenceless border with a national park. The animals can roam freely from the national park to the nature preserve. They don't tag the animals nor are they hunted. But you can go to the resort and they do walking safaris, and driving safaris. And the photos from the website (showing the resort) are awesome! I would really love to go someday....

I know a couple who stayed at Nkorho for a few days as part of a South Africa and Botswana trip. They had nothing but good things to say about the camp and guides. It must be a great location; they saw all the "big 5" (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, cape buffalo) within 2 days. Someday...
Right now it looks like wildebeast and Thomson's gazelles (I think).
Well they were there. As I was typing they switched to night vision.

elephants are nocturnal??
Yep! I've seen them during the say and at night. I looked it up and found this blurb:
Elephants are nocturnal and diurnal, needing to forage for more than 14 hours a day to find a considerable quantity of food – an adult can consume as much as 300 kg in a day! They sleep for just a few minutes whilst standing. They like to visit waterholes at least once a day to drink, bathe and wallow in mud. Typically, they drink between 70 to 150 litres a day. The elephants that roam the desert areas of the Kaokoveld and Damaraland in Namibia drink once every few days.
There's a lot of animals I'm suprised to see at night. Like rhinos.
And hyenas are freaky.

Apparently, the fact that I'm watching scares all the animals away. I had this by me for 2 hours early this morning while it was turning dusk in Africa--nothing. Not one single thing. Then several hours through their night. Still nothing. Now, for the past hour and a half, since the sun started coming up at the watering hole, nothing--except 3 ducks which have been around for about 10 minutes. I give up; I'm going to bed. Okay, animals, it's safe to come out now!

I saw the turtle too, Alysha! Some days are SOO slow and other days there are a ton of animals! I keep it up on my screen all day (off to the side so I can just click over to it), and if I leave my computer, I put it on full screen so I can look over from the other room periodically. I also leave the sound on so I can hear if something is there (or is coming). I can't tell you how addicted to this thing I am! If I ever get really rich, I am going to mount a big screen on my wall and have this going 24/7 on it - like a moving picture!!
I find it very restful and exciting at the same time. Thanks again Kristi for my new obsession! :)

I keep this site open in the background a good bit of the time I'm using my computer. It was uncanny how many animals I saw on Friday and Saturday. Since that time, I've had limited sightings of anything. I saw some cool-looking bird earlier today for the first time, but that's it for more than 24 hours. I missed the giraffe (reported early Saturday morning) by less than a half hour. Kristi, I'm just like you...I get really excited when I link to the site and find animals. I spent Saturday morning sending emails to friends to check out the site. Unfortunately, I had several friends try to look at the waterhole..they waited through the blackberry ads, but then the waterhole never comes up. I don't know what to tell them. One of them is on the same service provider I'm on.

This was happening to me on Saturday and Sunday, but it's working again today. Not that I'm seeing any animals. I saw an elephant Friday, so I guess you guys aren't just making this all up. All I've seen today is a small dark spot on the far side of the pond that moves from left to right and off camera. I think she got her still shots from the website somewhere. There is no zoom capability. During the day, someone remotely operates the camera and will pan around and zoom for you if they see something. Sometimes the camera operator isn't so good and they don't focus the lens very well, but overall they do a good job. Typically overnight they leave the camera stationary, directed on the watering hole, although I have occasionally seen them move the camera at night too.

I'm having that problem connecting to the site again. I'm beginning to wonder if it's possibly related to the number of people connected to the site. Oh well...I'll keep refreshing and hope to connect at some point. Since it's in the wee hours of the morning in South Africa, there's probably nothing going on anyway. I'll admit that I'm ready to see some zebras again. I watched an elephant over the weekend that looked almost like he was running through the grass in a very carefree way...his ears were flapping in the wind. :D

Grace
03-01-2007, 10:08 AM
I'm definitely no expert, but I have been looking up the animals as I see them, since I'm curious too.
The big animals that look like Buffalo are Wildebeast. The small "antelopy" things are Impala (I think). Editing to add, I looked further and they are NOT Impala - they are SPRINGBOK. I will post a picture below. The typically hang with zebras, which is exactly how we see them!
The bigger antelopy things (with thin white stripes on their backs) are Kudu.
Here is a picture of the Springbok:

There is someone there at least most of the day. The camera often focuses in on whatever might be going on and follows the animals around. Even if it's just a bug - I think it's kind of funny when they do that! :D
At night it seems to be stationary more of the time. There were hyneas there the other night and they kept going in and out of the viewing area, but the camera didn't track them like it does during the day.
You can see it moving right now - obviously a person, not just an automatic pan............

I've spent a lot of time seeing just the empty pond....BUT...when the animals are being shown, it's awfully fun. Don't forget the time difference. On the east coast, there's a 7-hour difference. I've seen animals LATE in the evening (closer to midnight or slightly after)...meaning it's early morning in South Africa. The other best time is when it's later in the afternoon in S. Africa....I think that's usually around late morning here. As Susan's son pointed out, there are probably lots of other waterholes. :) They're definitely not at this one every day. Keep an eye on the board...people post quite often when animals are being shown.

Ahem...the cameraperson needs to do a little zooming in, please! The animals are far away though they're still there to be seen. If they can zoom into a teeny-tiny bug, they can zoom into the animals.

I'm beginning to wonder if they some how control the flow of the animals. There seems to be great numbers of them on the weekends, just a personal observation.
Personally, I think they just have time to go to the local watering hole for a drink more on the weekend. During the week they work, then come home to the family and screaming monkeys.....

That's what I do.
I then paste the screen shot into whatever photo editing program I'm using.

I've tried pasting the images into Outlook Express, webmail, and Word. I need to reinstall Photoshop and see if that makes a difference. The first three just gave the menus with the black box...and no animals.
Thanks!

I'm so bummed... we can't get the site to work. My daugter actually cried! We spent about 1/2 hour trying and I downloaded all kinds of "stuff", but nothing works. We had an older Mac... I told my husband this may be a reason to upgrade!!!!

I'm with you, Kim. I read through this thread and have been so excited, but can't get anything to work (except sound) at any time of day or night. What am I doing wrong. I REALLY want to see this. I am glad so many of you are able to and are enjoying it. Maybe next time will be my lucky one!

I must be in the wrong time zone. Either its pitch dark with no animals or bright daylight with no animals. Either way, I will keep watching.

Not much action today but I listened to a thunderstorm roll by this morning and it looks like another one is on the way.

Yeah, I guess the camera guy was trying to get a better shot, but made it worse!
If you leave the sound up on the computer, you can hear when the elephants come - they make a lot of noise splashing the water around. I was in another room and came running when I heard the water splashing...... :D

I'm bummed! I STILL have not seen anything on the cam.....
And I tried to pull this up at work, and we apparently are blocked from "streaming" video/audio here at the office. What were they thinking! ;-)
Maybe one day, by some freak of nature, I will see something...
Keeping my fingers crossed.

OK, so I hear something rustling around, but I don't see anything. I refresh my screen to make sure the video isn't stalled or something. Suddenly, something big and black is galloping across the screen! I get all excited until I realize---it's just the headless horseman from the Netflix ad. Dang it.

Thanks for the giggle :D I got excited a few hours ago because something big was in front of the camera...but it was a human - probably the camera guy finishing up for the day

I think the camera was broken down off it's post for awhile. That's probably why the human was there fixing it. I only had a shot of the ground for quite awhile a day or so ago. I believe the camera is operated remotely.

Kevlar, do you keep the Africam running all the time? Or do you shut it down and reopen it intermittently? I think to be able to see animals, you need to keep it running all the time. I sometimes minimize it when I'm doing something else (or just keep it up to one side of the screen), but I leave the sound on - as Alysha already mentioned - you can oftentimes hear the animals making noises, walking around or splashing in the water to alert you to go look. When I'm not actually using my computer, I put the cam in full screen mode so I can glance at it from another room periodically - and I can still hear it from the other room too. DH comments on hearing the crickets all the time :p
But the animals often do come and go fairly quickly, so unless you were watching all the time, they'd be easy to miss. Don't give up though! It's so interesting and so much fun when you do get to see them. :) I am enjoying figuring out what they all are (the not so obvious ones I mean).

I'm at work, so sometimes I have to open and close the cam periodically which is why i'm sure I haven't seen any animals! But today, I just so happened to have it open when I heard big splashing and the elephant was there! I was so excited, that was my first sighting...but like Grace said, he was gone in just a few minutes...drank and splashed some water, walked around the hole, then left.

This is getting to be comically ridiculous! I was just in the kitchen, and I heard predatory noises coming from the vicinity of my computer. I got all excited until I figured out that I was hearing predatory noises coming from my cat, threatening the birds in the back yard. :( Like Mr. I-Ain't-Got-No-Front-Claws could really threaten anyone. :D

I have been turning it on and off, although sometimes I leave it on. Those chirpy insects or tree frogs get a little annoying.
I keep hearing what sound like waves - it must be wind passing the microphone.

I was watching one night when it was turning from night to day and they were very slow to turn the night-vision mode off - everything went from night to bright to brighyer to white! Then they turned it back to regular mode and it was fine............

There were just gazelles, (I think) Wildebeests and zebras.... then one of the sightseeing cars came by and scattered them! Zebras, now!
