View Full Version : Healthful Living/Weekly Workout Support Group - Week of 4 March

“Why should I participate in a ‘Healthful Living and Weekly Workout Support Group’?” I hear you ask. “I don’t run and I’m not specifically trying to lose weight.” What we, as a thread, are about is being healthy about how we live our lives and how we balance our busy lifestyles, our eating habits (not dieting but nutrition), and personal health maintenance. Our health is more than a number on a scale or a resting heart rate, our health is a function of mind, body, and spirit. How we achieve our healthy lives is what this thread is about.

“March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb...” If this week is any indicator of coming in like a lion we may be mixed. Some, sadly, have had tornadoes and foul weather to beat the band while others (me most notably) have had a nice start to March. But I’ll try to not focus on the weather but try to focus more on life in general and how we as a group are doing. But to a certain extent our moods and energy do follow the climate. We’ve had a couple tough weeks for folks who talk on the thread but most have been doing well and being healthy all around. For those who have been away for a while or for those who think they may want to join us I’ll try to recap the past weeks if anyone cares to read on:

Kate - Back at it after being without electricity for a while; did some “maintenance” on her trusty steed so couldn’t ride at the end of this past week; getting into the swing of the elliptical at the Y and working on her wrist strength for racquetball.
Karen - Getting ready for FIL’s visit next week; preparing for Purim and the celebration/commemoration associated with that day; new elliptical is working grand; DD “hitting the cash register” with orthodontics; life is hectic but going well with three healthy kids and a loving DH.
Laura - Busy describes what’s been going on for her; DS getting into the full swing of swimming; DD still away; SO traveling; big case being prepared for at work - we hope she’s had time to breathe this week.
Lily - Checked in to say life was getting back to normal after her plumbing problems in her apartment; getting stronger and having more energy all the time; looking forward to hearing how her week went last week.
Me (Les) - Seminary application pressing on me; got plenty of exercise and healthful living things done; lots of meetings this past week but nothing out of the ordinary or too troubling; still working on my re-engineered self (and loving it).

Healthful living - I have no real complaints on the healthful living side. Yep, my ankle still aches more often than it should but I think that’s where it is these days. I’ve made great strides on not letting stress flow into destructive places like keeping me from sleeping or making me irrationally angry or short. Things are working just like I plan and my goal is to continue down this road. Found out part of my stressors may be going away because my boss fully expects me to do less work on a project at work that could take a lot of time in favor of the guy who just reported and who will be here for years (and who will be responsible until he leaves anyway) - helps reduce some stress.

Workout will be easier this week than in weeks past. I can’t think of too many things that may get in the way this week. My plan: to run Mon, Tue, and Thu - spin on Wed. Then there will be a long run next weekend - not sure how far but probably something in the sane range (10-14 miles).

Need to get out to the gym for my weight lifting session but I’ll be back later to see how you all are doing.

Until later - peace,
Les

Hey Les,

Thanks for getting us started. I can't remember if I posted last week or not. Things at work are going from bad to worse. Suffice it to say that I should not be working there, but there are not a lot of options in Colorado Springs and I have to decide about the move (told DS of the possibility and he was not pleased. :( -- I didn't expect him to be, but secretly I hoped he might be more open to it).

Workouts have not been bad. I am getting about 4 workouts a week in and that is okay. Not where I would want to be but what my schedule allows me to do without working out at 5:00 a.m. or 8:00 p.m. DS had a good week at HS swimming. They did time trials and he was the second fastest in the 50 free during practice so he will likely swim that at his first meet on the 13th. DD is doing well in France. She just hooked up with Young Life Paris and found an off shoot of the Hillsong Church there (Les, you are probably familiar with their praise and worship music), so she is feeling good about her stay.

Les, did I see you mention that you are going to be in Colorado Springs in April? I would love to try and meet you if have any spare time (I don't know if you know but I live in the Springs). You sound really upbeat about the path your life is taking; that is great to hear.

That's about it from here. Have a good week everyone!

Les, no, no, no, not line dancing! Two stepping! Line dancing is for you East Coasters! :D Did some dancing (in 3-inch spike heels ) Friday night, had a good time, got told frequently that i look like i'm in my early- to mid-20s. :D A needed ego boost after the ex-BF.

Went riding a bit Saturday, but Mack was cranky, stiff behind, having problems with his asthma and being a bit of a bronc, so I got off after 20 minutes. Hopefully he'll be happier Monday.

Got ALL of my caulking done. On Friday did the kitchen and all the cracks where the dry wall is separating from the trim thanks to our foundation problems here. Called my contractor and he is coming Friday to do some work I need before i can do a BUNCH of painting. Looking forward to seeing him - he has a really positive attitude and makes me feel more upbeat about the house. I'm really not particularly handy. I thought i would learn to be handy owning this house, but it doesn't come naturally. Maybe i'm doing better than i think, but hanging blinds just slays me!

Did some VERY enjoyable work on the house Saturday night. I need to decorate, so i went shopping. :)

Today i did my ab and elliptical workouts. Busy week ahead due to work and some various horse stuff that needs to happen.

BTW, haven't heard anything about that job so i'm assuming it's a no-go. But the good news is my responsibilities at my current job are shifting, and i'm going to be working 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. instead of 4 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. A move in the right direction.

Les-Thanks for getting us going once again. Glad to hear the stressors at work are going to be lifted a bit for you. I hear you on "just accepting" that certain aches and pains(your ankle;my knee etc...) are a part of life and aging. It's terible how we DO begin to think that way. OH MY!

Kate-Too bad Mack was a cranky guy today. Let's hope tomorrow he has a better attitude. That's just what I tell my kids, too!!!:D In spite of what you think, you DO sound pretty handy around the house. I'll still cross my fingers that something comes through for you on the job that you want.

Laura-Maybe by telling DS, he'll have some time to let the possibility of a move sink in gradually. One can hope, anyway. And I'm jealous of you if you do get to meet, Les! But seriously, that would be such a neat thing for both of you if it happens. Hope work is better for you this week.

I had a good bike ride and did my abs today. As I mentioned last week, did a slew of baking this weekend. Most of it(except one batch of cookies:D ) went in the freezer for next weeks company. The kids enjoyed the Purim carnival at religion this morning. And tonight the cook(baker) took the night off, so we all went out for dinner.:)

Tomorrow back to the pool and boxing.

Have a good week,
Karen

Les, no, no, no, not line dancing! Two stepping!
So sorry, I think I was actually trying to write LIKE not line - darn those fingers... I know better than that, there's no other dancing in Texas besides the Texas two-step and Country swing. Where was my mind? (I'll still plead fat fingers...)
Got ALL of my caulking done. On Friday did the kitchen and all the cracks where the dry wall is separating from the trim thanks to our foundation problems here...
Great going with your caulking, I've got a little you can do around here if you'd like. ;) I'm busy trying to get things set to rent in the late summer/fall. The shift in hours sounds like it is a good thing even if I loved graveyard shift back when I did shift work. I hope Mack is better tomorrow too.
Laura - Yep, it would be hard to move with DS where he is in school but if you do move I bet he'll be ok. He should be able to grow into his new school if you move and being athletic won't hurt him either. Sorry that work is not going well for you these days. I don't have many thoughts about what to do but I'll be thinking about you and your possible move. Life is really a lot better now and even if I'm staring at retiring, moving, starting school, taking a huge pay cut/increase in expenses between now and September I'm really at peace. My friends all tell me that it isn't hard to believe since this is what I'm really supposed to be doing anyway. I know a lot about Hillsong Church and am a "graduate" of Young Life from ages ago (San Diego in High School) it sounds like DD is making lots of friends and having a great time. I'll have to let you know about Colorado Springs - if everything works I'll be there in mid-April - I'll keep a visit on my calendar just in case.
Karen - Yep, terrible getting older - but I just can't beat some of the aches and pains. Luckily they fade once I get up and get moving. I'd be willing to drop up your way or play host if you and the family happen to drift down to the DC area in the Fall. I'm always game to meet people in real life. Glad your baking went well and that most of the cookies got into the freezer (even though I've been known to eat frozen cookies in the past :D ). I hope you have a good week ahead and that swimming and boxing go well for you in the morning.

I lifted today per my norm and it felt good. Funny thing on the way home from the Y - had to bust out laughing as I approached the same corner where the wheels fell off the wagon last week (no kidding) since I was duplicating the events from last week to a tee. This week was better though - no wheel problems. Whew!

Looking forward to a relatively quiet week... (little chance but I can always hope). So until tomorrow... peace to all,
Les

Les-I'm glad to hear you had no repeat performances of last weeks trip to the YMCA this past weekend. A chuckle looking back on that excursion is enough for one week. And I'm glad you can look back so soon and chuckle. Tells me you really have a good sense of humor.

I almost had a chuckle or so on me on my trip to the YMCA this morning!! I always take DH's car there since it's more economical than my minivan and I'm home before DH has to take it to work. Well, this morning he literally left me a few fumes to make it there and back! Fortunately it is only 5-10 min. away, so I made it both ways. I was secretly hoping maybe he would not make it to work on what was left(if anything) in the tank when I got home. HE DID! :p I did have a good swim. After breakfast and getting the kids to school, I did the groceries and then went to boxing. So a pretty typical start to my week. The boys had religion tonight and DD, jazz class.

Tomorrow-swim, box, and maybe BBC(sparring). In the afternoon DS#1 has an orthodontist appt(I've been living there lately, so it seems! ). Gotta remember to get some wax for DD, too.

That's it for me tonight. See you tomorrow.

Les, apparently there is also something called 3-stepping. going to have to figure out what that is. :D

Karen, you're reminding me i have to put gas in my car tomorrow! BTW, because of you i thought to put a picture from Purim into Monday morning's paper!

Mack was in a much better mood today. Thanks goodness, b/c he got to practice loading in my friend's trailer. We are going on a trail ride next Monday, and since i haven't trailered him much i wanted to make sure he would get in (he's picky b/c he's so big he doesn't fit in some trailers). He did a bit of the hokey-pokey at first, but then he was a champ and got right in. We also had a nice ride on the 100 acres. A beautiful day. Did my ab workout and am almost finished up at work so i'm fixing to do my forearm/wrist stuff.

Will hit the gym Tuesday, but have to work a 2 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. shift...

Leslie Ferguson

Kate - ROTFL - imagining your horse doing the hokey-pokey. Yes I know that's scary but just the image of a good-sized horse "putting it's left foot in and it's left foot out..." just conjures up all sorts of strange aperations. 3-stepping??? That's a new one by me but then I do have 3 left feet. :D

Karen - Every once in a while I do get a cosmic chuckle - more often now than in the past (that's part of the re-engineered Les). Darn it - you didn't get DH to stay home this morning because the car ran out of gas... ;)Do you have your own seat at the orthodontist? ;) As much time as you spend there I'd guess you did. Have a great day up your way.

I kind of had an off day - no real reason to not run. Lots of excuses to come up with but none of them hold water. Still, it was worth not running because I got to spend time with LW and have dinner at a reasonable hour. That and I did a lot of the printing of my Seminary application (I keep messing up my applications) so I can get it posted as soon as my friend gets me the last of the recommendations.

Tomorrow - I'll have to get out before lunch or I probably won't get out at all. I've got a hole in the morning that should suffice so I'll shoot for that as long as it isn't inhospitible.

Until tomorrow have a great Tuesday and may you all have peace,
Les

Kate-I'm glad to hear that I planted a "Purim" thought in your head for the paper! And equally glad Mack is in better spirits for you. Hearing about him doing the "hokey pokey" does conjur up a funny picture in my mind as well!:D

Les-Spending quality time with LW is a VERY GOOD excuse IMHO for putting exercise on hold for one day. Hope it was a good time, too.

I had a busy one today and have to make this quick as the "taxi" is still idling. I had a great swim and spent a bit of "quality time" with DH after getting the kids off to school and before heading out to boxing this morning!!:D DH went into work a bit later this morning since he is the "call man" tonight. Boxing was good and I should have stayed for BBC today, BUT....like you Les, I had no real good excuse....I just was not up for it today. I had a funky night last night after talking to my mom on the phone. She had a rough week last week and talking to her took a bit of the wind out of my sails today. I did go home and get a nice dinner going for tomorrow night before I had to warm up the "taxi." Got DS#1 to his orthodontist and DS#2 to cub scouts. In a short time, I have to get DS#1 to his cub scout mtg. and go pick up DS#2. Then, of course, I'll have to turn back around to get DS#1. If you're not confused or dizzy at this point, I am!!:D

Tomorrow-swim, box, and religion for the kids(I think that might be it...MIGHT BE, anyway!)

Good evening,
Karen

My head is spinning just thinking about your days Karen. Sorry to hear about your Mom, it must be hard for her. Is there anyone around that can be with her for a while, especially as you celebrate some of the important family holidays? I think a little of the funk is going around too - nothing terrible, just something that can take the wind out of your sails for no real reason. Tomorrow is another day too. Yep, I firmly believe that spending quality time with LW is a wonderful thing considering all the days/weeks/months we haven't been able to spend time together.

I didn't get my run today but a spin was in the works. About 45 minutes. After dinner I prepped a meal for our Wednesday Night Lent Potluck - I decided I'd be helpful for our Assistant and make a veggie dish (she's a vegetarian and I can be convinced...) so I roasted then steames leeks, purple onion, redskin potatoes, and carrots with garlic and salt and pepper and a splash of olive oil. What a heady aroma and the veggies are just right for a quick reheat tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a good hump day and I'll see you tomorrow.

Peace,
Les

Hearing that you all have days you're not particularly motivated sure makes me feel better. I sure have my fair share of those. :D

Karen, sorry to hear your mom is having a rough time right now.

Today i just did my ab workout - up to 30 reps of various exercises because 25 was too easy - and 35 minutes on the elliptical. Am hoping to manage my time well enough in the near future to get to 45 minutes. Work has kept me hopping, so might not get in an arm workout tonight.

Tomorrow Mack has his farrier (shoeing) appointment and I usually don't ride him after that because he's itching to go out in the pasture with his buddies by the time he's done. So maybe I'll do some planning on what all i need to buy at the hardware store and Home Depot before my big push (vacation) begins Friday for working on the house.

Les-Thanks for the concern for Mom. Yes, she does have people close by and has actually being keeping herself very busy. I have 2 of 3 brothers there as well as cousins etc... and she has alot of close friends. Brother #3 has also being keeping her up many a night long distance calling for advice/reassurance etc... as he is going through a divorce. I think the big problem was calling her on the 1 month anniversary of Dad's passing(not intentional, mind you:( ) That and she was having problems getting the contractors to finish the bathroom work that they had begun. It was being made wheel chair accessible for my Dad. She finally had to fire the original men and found a young carpenter who will finish everything during his "off" hours(weekends and evenings). He wants to moonlight to make extra cash. So all will work out in the long haul. It's just not an easy time, but she is coping as best she can under the circumstances. Sorry this got long-winded.

On a brighter note, I hope you enjoyed your potluck tonight. Roasted veggies are yummy, so I'm sure your contribution was a winner.

Kate-Mack sounds like he has such personality!:) So does he and his "buddies" compare shoe sizes/styles????:p Ahh, Home Depot....DH's home away from home! If I forget on Friday....wishing you an enjoyable vacation ahead of time. I forget....are you going anyplace or just back porching it?

I started off the day with a good swim. I even had my own lane for all but the last 5 min. of my swim which was a nice bonus. Took a jacuzzi as well today as it did not look grundgy and the temp. was not near scalding today. It was snowing a fine dusty snow this morning and continued to do so all morning which made the morning traffic a bit interesting, but school was not delayed. Yay! After the kids got off, I did the milk/veggie shopping and went off to box. Good class today, but I've been slacking on the BBC classes again. I know I need to buckle down and do a few more of those....one of these days! This evening boys had religion.

Tomorrow....MOTS(more of the same) as far as I'm concerned. The only "kid" things are another open house for DS#1 for boy scouts for next year(this is his last year of cub scouts so he is checking out all of the boy scout troups in the next week or so). Also have to go to Costco since I'll be having guests this weekend. That's it!

Hope hump day was good for all,
Karen

Karen, your days remind me of mine when the kids were younger; it was drop one off, pick one up most nights. Now it is just DS and it still seems hectic at times. I personally think the second and third months after the death of a family member are the hardest. Hugs to your family and your mom.

Kate, I agree Mack sounds like he has quite the personality. I may have missed this before but how old is he? Good job on you consistent ab workouts. I often think about it. ;)

Les, Les, your description of your roasted veggies has me drooling! Glad you got your spin in.

I lifted on Sunday and road but have not been getting my workouts in otherwise this week. Tonight is weights though. I still have time to get my cardio workouts in if I am good the rest of the week.

Time to go and wash the car before it gets dark. Everyone else in the Springs seems to have done so mine looks incredibly dirty in comparison. Have a good evening.

Laura

First off the line, the roasted veggies were a hit and the vegetarian in the crowd was thrilled to have something besides the green salad and the one dish she made. Most of the folks scarfed the stuff down but then how can you go wrong with roasted potatoes and onions? :D

Kate - I hope you have a productive vacation working on your house. The offer still goes out... ;) Glad we can provide reassurance that being dis-motivated isn't a big deal. Hope Mack feels better after a trip to the farrier too.
Laura - Washing cars in Co. Springs? I find it hard to motivate myself to wash my car here when it's as cold as it is (but I know I should wash it more). Of course I'd bet they put nice things on the roads that they don't here so... A couple workouts are better than none.
Karen - No problem from here and remembering your mom, there's a spot at the top of each new month for "carry-overs" and she's there. I can only imagine how disruptive the calls from B#3 are. But I think your mom will do well, just needs time to get the "hangers on" (the bathroom is probably as disruptive as anything else). Good day for you, a little dusting of snow, workouts galore and everything else falling into place - sounds just charming.

With all the stuff blowing around today I felt it better to spin again (I've got to run some -- really I do). It's official, I received my letter from the Bishop confirming my Postulancy (the designation in the Episcopal Church for someone who is undergoing intensive spiritual training and education). That official letter was one of the last things I need for my application for school. One step closer - and one step closer to retirement and a little relaxation.

Time is wasting and I need to hit it - still lots of things to wrap up this week but everything is truly falling together. So until tomorrow -- peace,
Les

Les, congrats on the letter from the Bishop!

Mack does have a lot of personality. If i weren't clueless about computers, i'd post a really funny photo i have of him. He's about 13 years old. And funny about comparing shoe sizes - most of our horses wear a size 0 or 1; he wears a size 4!

Today was a bust on exercise again (except running next to Mack as we trotted out to the pasture :D), and tomorrow probably will be too. Made it to Home Depot, but tomorrow I have to go to Lowes to get lots of paint. Want to have everything ready when I get up Friday so i can start working.

Will try to spend my evenings during my vacation either at the gym or at the barn to take a break from working on the house. No internet at home, so i won't be checking in too much. Have a great 10 days or so, everybody!

Kate-Home depot AND Lowe's....ACK!!! I better not tell DH...he'd be SO SO jealous!:D Wow, a size 4! Mack sure does have big feet! Is 13 yrs. old for a horse or not?? Am I showing my ignorance on the topic with this question??:o Enjoy your week off.

Les-Most importantly....CONGRATULATIONS! You're another step closer. YIPPEE! Talked to Mom again this afternoon. She sounded a bit better. She took a bus trip to Chicago yesterday with some friends and some sort of group to see the show, Wicked. She said it was a great time. She is also trying to plan a trip to visit the kids, DH and I here in early April. That should be a nice time, too. Glad the veggies were a hit.

Laura-Ack!!! My car is so full of winter it is pathetic. But it is not worth washing here until you're sure winter IS really over.:p Besides, it has been too cold here this past week for car washes. Next week should be a bit warmer.:)

Today-Excellent swim(pool was pretty full this morning) and good boxing workout. Also made my costco run and TJ's as well. Have to get DS#1 to another boy scout open house tonight, so I'm going to have to fly away soon.;)

Tomorrow-swim, box, and ??haircut(I hope). DD has gymnastics and temple in the evening(?).

That's it. Enjoy the rest of the evening.

Kate - I'll echo Karen and let her know that not knowing if a 13 year old horse is young or old. From your comment you must have a few more than Mack in the pasture (most of our horses...). I hope that you have a good vacation and we'll look forward to seeing you in 10 days.

Karen - It does sound like your mom had a good trip to Chicago. I'll confess I don't know much about Wicked, but it sounds like your mom enjoyed it and that's key. I hope she does make it out to see you all in April - such a wonderful month in CT (really) and such a great month for lots of my friends (their birthdays). A productive day for you today and just enough frantic activity to punctuate it well. While you're out tomorrow getting your hair cut how about a couple for me too (I need a sheering)? ;)

No run today but I need to get off the bike and get on the streat to give my knees a break (too many hours on the trainer whacks my knees). Trying to juggle way too many balls at work now but everything is falling into place. Tomorrow is another day to excel, now all I really need to do is copy my medical record tomorrow (part of retiring) so I can give one full copy to the Veteran's Administration for a dusability determination.

But for now, that's all that's fit to print so until tomorrow - TGIF!

Peace,
Les

No shearing for me today.:( The lady who usually cuts my hair on Friday's was off today. I'll just have to wait until next week. Oh well. But I did have a good swim and an excellent boxing class. Spent a bit of time this afternoon, getting things together for dinner Sunday with FIL and his new friend.;)

Weekend:my usual routine-bike and elliptical plus abs; DS#2 is going to a church function tomorrow morning with 2 GIRLS from his class at school! He is such a ladies man!!!:D He was very curious about it when he was invited to go along, so we figured "why not." Give him a well-rounded cultural education, right!? Both boys need to also spend time on their cars for the Pinewood Derby coming up in 2 weeks. I'll do a bit more preparing of things for Sundays dinner along with our usual Saturday homemade pizza and movie night. Then on Sunday besides religious school and FIL's visit, DH and DS#1 are doing a special program/class at the synagogue. They will be making their own "Tallit" which is a special "prayer shawl" that one wears at temple during services. Jewish boys don't usually wear/receive one until they are Bar Mitzvah'ed. This class is for the pre Bar Mitzvah boys(5,6,7, and 8th graders). That will be all morning.

That's the highlights here for me!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone,
Karen

It really sounds like your son is a ladies man! I remember my thoughts about things like that when I was his age, the "scary" world of the "opposite sex" (although he probably doesn't understand that quite yet). That's too bad about your stylist, maybe I'll get my hair cut before you now. ;) I hope you have a good, albeit busy weekend. BTW - the tallit sounds like a neat thing to work on.

Did a lot of running around today at work, nothing that I'd specifically call exercise but going up and down stairs (my office is on the third floor) multiple times is a good workout. My story and I'm sticking with it! The neatest thing today was I got a present. Not from LW but from a guy at work. OK and explanation may be in order... he went to Bahrain for work. Before he left I asked if he would pick up some Saffron for me (they sell there cheap). He returned today with a 1 g. box of Saffron filaments from Safinter (http://safinter.com/). I was (and am still) both in heaven and tickled by it. I was so giddy that I had saffron that I was like a 5 year old. One of the guys who works for me said if he knew spices would make me so happy he'd have "bought me off" earlier. ;) Once I break the seal - tomorrow with some Moroccan couscous (most likely) - I'll truly be in heaven.

Tomorrow morning will be a long run of some distance (probably between 10-14 miles). After that... LW is off tomorrow so maybe...

Anyway, enough about that and I'm off to bed. Peace to all and have a great weekend.

Les
