The kids and I are taking a road trip to Lake Tahoe in April. We'll be going all the way through Oregon on 5 and somewhere in northern CA heading over towards Reno/Tahoe. I want to try and burn through most of Oregon the first day and then meander a bit once we get into CA. On the way back I think we'll hit Mt. St. Helens (my son loves volcanoes and stuff like that).

Any suggestions of things to do along the way? (The kids are just about 5 and 2). We have a National Parks pass so that kind of thing is good. Also looking for things to do in Tahoe. We'll be skiing at Squaw on my sons birthday, but that's all I have planned so far.

Have you considered Crater Lake in southern OR? Very beautiful, nice hike down to the actual lake and you could do a boat tour as well.

I just re-read your post and your trip is in April - I doubt Crater Lake would be clear of snow by then but just the same, I will leave my suggestion just in case.

The Oregon coast is always worth a visit. Kids (and adults!) love to play on the sand dunes at Pacific City!

I grew up with vacations to the Oregon coast. I have a wonderful watercolor of Haystack Rock that my step-mother did and other great pictures from there. I would definitely plan on stopping to at least do a little beach walking or something like that.
