I was pretty much under whelmed by the boys tonight. I think the girls are going to blow them away tomorrow night. That being said, I did like Blakes performance - I actually know that song - and I really liked how he did it. I thought both Chris R and Chris S did OK too and will make it into the final. Going home - probably Sanjaya. The performance that did annoy me tonight was Jared. He is a good looking guy, but he sure does know it ;)

Yep, underwhelmed here too.

I thought Blake did a good job and I still really like him, but I didn't like the song.

I thought Chris Sligh did well, but the judges were pretty harsh!? Even Paula was critical tonight. Maybe the judges think - and they would be right - that the boys need to start bringing it already.

Chris Richardson - I like him, but wasn't sure if he wasn't a bit off last night - but the judges seemed to like it pretty well.

Sanjaya RUINED that John Mayer song - I like that song a lot, but Sanjaya just didn't do anything with it. It fell flat like all of his songs do.......

Sundance - Meh, not impressed.

Jared - Too preppy, too cheesey.

Brandon - I thought he sounded better than what the judges said, but still not great. But I really like him and hope he stays.

Phil - What the hell was he thinking? When Ryan said someone was going to sing a LeAnn Rimes song, all I could think was WTF? Sounded terrible. Why, oh why would you pick something like that??????

Sundance and Sanjaya need to go home tomorrow. But that doesn't mean they will.

Yup, it was a snoozer. The only performance that stood out for me was Chris Sligh. He gets on my nerves for some reason, though. Probably because he resembles Jack Osbourne, Ozzie Osbourne's son.
The others were mostly forgettable.

Boring indeed, with the exception of Blake - who I just love! Chris Sligh's voice is great, but the song didn't do anything for me. Wasn't familiar with the Keith Urban song, but I thought I thought Chris R did a good job and it showed a different side of him. Everything else was forgettable for me, with the exception of Phil who I want to like but I thought he was just awful last night.

Meh.

I wonder which four the judges think "deserve" to make the final? (Or, in Simon's case, "3 1/2"...) Chris Sligh, Chris R., Blake...?

I like Blake, though I worry that he's a little low key and may not draw the big fan base he needs to stick around. I agree with Simon about Chris R.- he has a lot of talent, but he has to be careful b/c his voice borders on nasal a lot of the time.

The worst of last night, IMO- Sanjaya (of course!), Sundance (you're no Eddie Vedder!) and Phil (so unfortunate, and how can he not have figured out by now that he has a problem with his lower register- same exact thing with the Edwin McCain song??)

I have a sinking feeling Sanjaya and Sundance will be safe once again- if they MUST stay, I hope we lose Jared (nice guy but awfully bland) and, I guess, Brandon- Brandon was way better than Phil last night, but I kinda like Phil. I hope I'm wrong and we can ditch Sanjaya and Sundance, though.

I was underwhelmed as well. I thought it was odd that the judges didn't know Blake's song. It was finally one that DH and I knew- we keep hearing songs we don't know. We tend to listen to rock, alternative and country. Also thought it was funny they were saying how new Blake was when the song is like 10 years old!

We didn't really like any of them. They were all okay. I like the way Chris S takes the critcism. He seems very interested in what the judges have to say.

This season really doesn't seem to live up to past seasons.

My problem with Blake is his voice is very middle of the road. I don't know if he could belt out a song to save his life. I'd hate to see what he'd do during "Broadway" week. He has a nice voice, though.

The only ones I liked were the two Chris'. The others could go and I don't think I'd notice!

Arg - I was so frustrated last night. The boys really lifted their game last week and now this?!

I though Chris S. was the best last night, followed very closely by Blake, who needs to show off his voice a little more, but I liked the performance.

Someone said this a few weeks ago and I can't remember who, but there's something about Phil that creeps me out a little. I don't know what it is but he makes me uneasy. That being said, the end of his song was okay but it was a bad choice and the bottom end of his range is dreadful!

Both DBF and I just don't quite get the Chris R. thing. I mean, he's an okay performer and has a pleasant voice but it's a bit too nasal for me and not just last night. Just a personal preference though.

Poor Sanjaya needs to go and have an expert really teach him about performing, projection and stage presence. I found Sundance screachy, and Brandon and Jared just so-so.

Bring on the girls!!:D

I think Blake is good, although I felt a little uneasy that he was introducing hiphop and reggae into the mixture (AI was the only pop culture institution where I didn't have to worry about hiphop). I think the beat box stuff is gimmicky. I would love to hear him do real straightahead jazz with scatting. But he must be good if I can see some talent while disliking the music.

I think Sundance shouted and really doesn't have soul, just power. I find Chris Sligh much more soulful, although I can't picture winning due to his looks (but that's what Simon thought last year about Taylor Hicks). I wish Jared and Brandon were more exciting--- I like them, but realize they probably don't have the oomph factor (even though Jordan has it in looks---why isn't he trying for a modeling career? and Brandon in cuteness and professional experience).

Sunjaya must go. Now! Even though momma looked incredulous when his flatness and lack of musicality and power were being discussed. I don't care how many hours he spends with a straightening iron and how he is probably a preteen girl's (or boy's) fantasy, the guy can't sing.

While I thought the hat looked ridiculous on Phil, what does Simon have against big eyes? I think they're striking on Phil, as they are on most anyone. Earlier in the season, he remarked about the special ed boy's enormous eyes "that look like a forest creature." And while I usually have some respect for Simon, I lost much of it when he wouldn't take ownership of his remark after Randy called him on it and reminded him that he can't help/change the way his eyes look. Isn't it Simon who keeps stressing that it's a SINGING competition? So, if that's the case, it's not about ideal facial proportions. Since Simon seems to have such an aversion towards large eyes, I think he should be sentenced to having to decorate his home with those Keane pictures popular in the sixties and seventies of the wide-eyed children!

I agree with most of what was said. I swear sometimes I think our tv must be off or something though b/c for most seasons we will like someone and they hate that person or vice versa. we really like Chris S and I thought he gave a lot of energy. They didn't really like him at all. I missed most of Blake, unfortunately, but like one of the pp, I wonder if he can really sing. Randy said he can last week - I thought he was avg. I do think he is original and I love that about him. It will be fun to see him perform over the next few weeks if he makes it.

I thought Sundance was just ok last week and worse this week. Sanjaya is just a wet noodle if you ask me. Good think he is young.

I thought that Brandon had a fun song last night but was lacking a little something - I think he might have blown it. I also didn't really get Chris H. I don't think he is that great a singer in general. Again, makes me think my tv is off? Phil has really disappointed as well. Hum, anyone else? Oh Jared. Yeah, he has disappointed, too. I was really rooting for him along w/Chris S. and Blake to make it to the top 12. But now I don't care b/c he is just eh for me.

This season is really low on talent in general if you ask me!:p

Tonight will be interesting.

I found myself agreeing with Simon a lot... DH said I didn't like anybody. But I thought Chris S was good, and I really wanted to like Sundance, but he didn't come through last night. Sanjaya .... well, he needs more than can be mentioned here! I thought they were right last week when Simon said it sounded/looked like bad karioke or a hs talent show!

You know, when he started singing, I was thinking the same thing. Those big buggy eyes looked so creepy with that flat spooky voice. I know he can't change his eyes, but the music biz isn't just about voice, as every mediocre famous singer can attest. It's also about image. So he has to be careful with what he looks like.

Making me shiver is NOT a good thing. ;)

I think Blake is good, although I felt a little uneasy that he was introducing hiphop and reggae into the mixture (AI was the only pop culture institution where I didn't have to worry about hiphop)

Huh?  That wasn't a hip hop song...and even if it was???

I thought most of the girls were great as usual. Even Antonella sounded better, and held her own under Simon's criticism (although he was right). It was kind of sad what Simon said about Haley (that he didn't even know her name), but again...I agree with him. She's fine, but so forgettable. I thought Stephanie was great and I was a little surprised at Randy's comments to her.

I just watched the video of Blake's song "all mixed up" (thanks for the link!! I am a horrible googler...:o ) and the words in the song talk about 'hip-hop reggae" I guess the title of the song explains it...

I liked it a lot.

The girls were definitely good but to me the obvious bottom 2 were Haley and Antonella. Haley was good, and Antonella is fooling herself, but the others are in another league. Well, maybe not Gina, but she is different so that is cool. But she might go for that reason, as well.

I thought Haley's song was 'self indulgent' to use Simon's words.

I also think that sometimes they are hard on the really good singers only comparing them to themselves not to the others. Maybe Randy thought that Stephanie could do better, but she did well and was awesome compared to the others. KWIM?

I though Melinda was the best by far last night and Antonella the worst by far (but no surprises there) I just hope hope hope that Antonella goes. Who is voting for her? It can't just be that she is on votefortheworst.com, can it?

Simon really doesn't mince his words and he can be unnecessarily cruel, which I don't like but he was spot on about Haley last night. She's just a bit forgettable and I also think her style is too cabaret/Broadway for AI - too much vibrato and OTT stage acting.

I sort of understood about Stephanie. I didn't really like her performance last night and it's not her voice, it more about personality - it's just not shining through as much as the others and she's not standing out as much performance wise. Sabrina is a bit at risk of this also, I feel, but has a bit more maturity and performance experience. I was really shocked when I found out Stephanie was only 19

mgs
03-08-2007, 07:46 AM
oh, Stephanie is only 19? Wow I didn't realize that. I can see what you are saying about her, Miss Liss

Yeah, Sabrina is 28? and shows it. She has performed a lot, her occupation is singer I think she said, so she has this kind of persona that is probably for a lounge? I am guessing. I think she is better than a 'lounge lizard' by far but maybe that is why she isn't quite as appealing. Have to say when she comes on I think,"oh yeah, her. She sings good but I forgot about her"

I also pretty much agreed with the judges last night. Please can we be rid of Antonella and Haley? I just feel so bad watching them (well mostly Antonella)....she just can't think that she is even close to Melinda and Lakisha in talent can she??? She just has different style? Um...I don't think so. Wake up! Melinda was AWESOME! I think (hope) her and Lakisha will be battling it out at the end. I really like the both of them, very humble and modest. It's funny how they look at the judges when they're done like they don't know if they did well or not!

I hadn't commented on the boys but I just really am not impressed with anyone...I think I like Chris Sligh and Chris Richardson (?) although I'm just choosing the best of the bunch. Very underwhelmed.

I agree, the competition seems a bit tepid so far, but it's still early. People have said how last year was so much better, but they forget that in the early stages it kinda sucked. The producers had themes like Stevie Wonder night that really threw the singers off. To be honest, they really didn't sound very good until oldies night with Rod Stewart. There still might surprises in store.:)

I agree about the boys' performances being dull. The only one I remember enjoying was Blake's. I wouldn't mind having his version on my iPod.

I agree with the Antonella and Haley comments - please go! I LOVED Melinda. She has such a nice personality and an amazing voice. W-O-M-A-N! So cool.

How many of you have been voting? I have to admit that I've been recording the show and watching the next day, so I haven't voted yet. I feel a little guilty about that because I'd feel terrible if Melinda or another deserving contestant was voted off.

She just has different style? Um...I don't think so. Wake up! Melinda was AWESOME!

Yeah, but this was her answer to an impossible question from Ryan - "Do you think that you deserve to be in the top 12?".

Now she may truly believe that she does deserve it (in which case she's sadly deluded), but even if she doesn't think she should be in the Top 12, is she really supposed to stand up there and say no? Nope, I don't deserve it, don't vote for me. :D So, I thought she did a pretty good job of giving a vague answer - well, I'm just different, so don't compare us. Tough question to answer and I have no idea what I would have said if I were her..............

I thought Melinda was the best last night, followed by Lakisha. Then Stephanie, Sabrina and Jordin.

Jordin - If I were a contestant, I don't think I'd EVER pick a Pat Benatar song - she's got INCREDIBLE range and is very, very difficult to sing. I thought it was okay - at least she didn't go for the big notes!

Haley sounded better and looked better, but not great. She and Antonella need to go, go, go.

I don't think Gina is Idol material, but I like that she's different. I did not like her rendition of the Evanescence song last night but I did like that she was rockin'. DH thought the judges intentionally went easier on her because they want her to make the Top 12 to keep things interesting. They always seem to have one rocker/punker in every group and I usually like their personality. Something different!

I hope America votes the right way tonight! But I could see Gina go just as easily as Antonella and Haley...........

I told my DD that girls under the age of 14 should not be allowed to vote. :p That has to be the only reason that Sanjaya is still around. Did you see when he walked over to the group of 11? I was a little surprised too. I had picked Antonella, Haley, Sanjaya and Phil. I was really surprised that Haley made it into the final 12. I thought that Sabrina was much better. I also think that Sanjaya knows he is going to go very soon, and almost looks embarassed that he keeps getting to stay and better singers go home - but that is not his fault, I mean how bad does he have to sing ;) Paula reminded me a little of a thread we had here recently about "I mean no disrepect but..." when she said something along the lines of "I am so surprised that Sundance is going home, but this is a singing competetion, but no disrespect to you Sanjaya"

And the singer helping them next week is Diana Ross  . Should be an interesting week for some contestants :D

I checked VoteForTheWorst earlier (in fact right after Sundance and Sabrina were voted off tonight....they may not have made it to the end it's just that some of those who stayed needed to go before them:eek: ) Sanjaya is VoteForTheWorst's latest victim:D...was Antonella their target last night? I think in the end VoteForTheWorst does not "win" but some good people are bumped off (not voted off) because of them. The strongest ones are going to make it to the end regardless of any kind of sabotage...(or at least I hope!:o )

I think the strongest are:

Melinda
Lakisha
Blake

I do not like Phil... He seems like he is wearing a costume and his voice and mannerisms (sp?) do not match his "look"...I am not saying he does not have a voice but his "presentation" is annoying because it doesn't seem to be him...or at least he seems like he is trying too hard. He is creepy to me too (I can't remember who said it above but I agree!)

Antonella had to go a long time ago just because of her attitude...her and her friend made me mad in the beginning of the competition when they bickered the whole time on the group song and put someone else in jeopardy. They reminded me of Paris and Nicole. Bu-Bye

I told my DD that girls under the age of 14 should not be allowed to vote.

LOL!!!!!!! That should be a rule. They are the ones with the cell phones and free time at 8:00 or 9:00 in the evening! (and vote for the cute boys) I am running around the house at voting time...getting homework done...kids in bed...cleaning done, finishing business stuff etc. I try 2 or 3 times and if I can't get thru I'm done:D

Cant wait for next week!

I really liked Sabrina and was shocked! First to go, Antonella...thank you!!!! Then I thought for sure Haley, once Gina made it. To me, the top tier is Melinda and Lakisha, then next tier was Stephanie and Sabrina.....the rest..eh. So I felt really bad to see Sabrina go - I thought she would be one that would just get better every week. And Sanjaya? Whatever....I give up.
Also, I thought Carrie looked beautiful....although her arms and legs looked a little skinny....or was that just her outfit? (or just me?).

I actually wasn't surprised about Sabrina - when Simon made the "hotel singer" comment, I thought it was the end for her.

I was very surprised about Sundance, though - although he wasn't the greatest singer left, he is miles better than Sanjaya and certainly has a better personality.

I was crazy busy last night so I was popping in and out of the living room to watch the exciting bits – thank goodness for TiVo :o). My reaction after Sabrina got the boot over Haley was "Holy cr*p" and after Sundance went over Sanjaya "HOLY CR*P!!!!!". I thought that Jared handled his leaving very badly. I just hate when contestants get too big for their boots and his reaction seemed very conceited to me. I mean, he certainly wasn't one of the worst but it wasn't a Chris Daughty sized upset that he went.

I told my DD that girls under the age of 14 should not be allowed to vote. :p

I'm tellin' ya, I think it's the mom vote as well as the under 14’s. He's not exactly a teen idol and I'm sure his fans are similar to Clay-mates :D

Also, I thought Carrie looked beautiful....although her arms and legs looked a little skinny....or was that just her outfit? (or just me?).

She's dropped some weight, but I think she still looks in proportion. That being said, I wouldn't want to see her get any skinnier!

I wasn't all that surprised by Sabrina either. She had almost zero screen time before the Top 12, whereas Haley got a lot of coverage... which is why I don't feel for the judges when they start going on about how "it's a SINGING competition." If they really thought it was only about the singing, they'd do the show differently.

I feel bad for Sanjaya at this point. He's in way over his head, and the kindest thing to do would be to let him go home so he doesn't have to endure any more humiliation in front of the judges. Somebody send a memo to the moms and under-14s: "If you love Sanjaya, send him HOME!"

I think that America did a pretty good job except Sabrina. Haley will be taken care of and so will Sanjaya. I bet the first 2 to go. I kind of feel that Sundance sould have gotten 1 more week to show off for the camera, and Sanjaya deserved to go, but again, neither of them were going to be the next AI. just like Haley - Sabrina might have had a shot with the image redo that they all go through at this point.

They may have been paid to go to Africa and perhaps it's a bit gimmicky, but it's all for a good cause and that's the bottom line.

I think it's good that they are using the success of AI to do some kind of good - however they choose to do it. By going public I'm sure they hope to draw more viewers and more publicity, but they will also get more money by involving the viewers at home - they are giving money for every vote cast and will give viewers at home a way to contribute directly as well.

I think they wanted to make everyone aware of it not so that they could pat themselves on the back (well maybe a little ;) ) but because we are all going to help. The sponsors of American Idol are going to make donations per each vote called in. They didn't say how much per vote, but it could add up considering last week had almost 37 million votes. The second night is going to be for the public to make donations. I really like that they are helping children in Africa, but also helping in their own backyards. Nobody in the US should be hungry, especially not children.
