View Full Version : Do You Ever Wonder How you Make It Through The Day?

I swear I am my own worst enemy! I often wonder how I actually make it from morning to night without going completely crazy. Today was a fine example (and mind you the day is little more than half over :p ).
I've been making new pillow covers for the bedroom, adding new pillow and doing some major fixes on the furniture (DH took apart the old headboard, one of those mirror-type) and he made new bedside tables and a headboard that I'll upholster. This project has taken quite a long time but so goes life around here (I live with a procrastinator).
The Euro shams that I cut the material for have mitered corners and piping neither of which I'm exactly versed in handling but who doesn't liek a good challenge. The pattern comes from a cover previous on the pillows that I took apart. Yesterday as I was starting to sew I couldn't figure out why I didn't have enough of the flange pieces, I had 8 but there are 2 pillows so I shrugged and went about sewing the thing together. Today I get to the part of putting the back piece on and lo-and-behold it appears to be too big! Why? Because I was only suppose to use 4 of the flange pieces (sort of like a false front?)!!! ARRRRRRGGGHHH!
So now I have to decide whether to do the second one the right way or my way!
Plus I have to learn how to sew mitered corners without puckers! Any clues?

Poor you! Hope the rest of the day gets better! :o
Do the other pillow your way, not the right way, if you have enough fabric. Otherwise, you'll spend the same amt of time ripping out the first one so that they match.
Mitered corners are difficult with thick fabric. Use a really long stitch on your machine. Even if you have to stitch it twice (don't use the same holes; start your second round halfway b/w two previous stitches) so that you don't have a loose, basted look to the corners, you may have better luck than w/ a standard stitch length. And go very slowly.

Thanks I will try that with pillow #2. And even if I decide to do it the right way...gotta be easier than what I just went through...I am not riping out the first one!:D There will be 3 other Euro shams (they will be of different material w/o flanges) so it will be easy to hide my errors!;)

No advice here from the person who can barely thread a needle ;) .
I just wanted to tell you how clever I think you are to even be able to do this. A friend of mine showed me a pillow she made the other day and I just thought that she was so veyr talented, but to her it was no big deal. To those of us who are sewing-challenged you are gods! :D

I have 4 pillows that came with my sofa. They are getting a little ratty and I thought maybe I could replace them. I would either go out and buy 4 new pillows (the expensive route, I'm sure!), or I would take the ones I have apart and make new covers for them in a fabric that would go with my sofa. These are just "throw" pillows. If I make them, I'd probably re-use the stuffing from the old ones. Think making new ones and using the old stuffing would be more economical?
Then the big question is, would I actually follow through and get this done?
