Is there such a thing as replacing a letter on a laptop keyboard? I took one off today because there was a crumb under it :o and now I can't get it back on. I've done this before and always got it back on. I may have broken something. I know I should call Dell, but was wondering if anyone encountered this problem before. It's the F2 key, so not one I use all the time, but it's driving me crazy not being there.

My work-issued laptop developed a problem where the "Y" wouldn't work. They had to replace the whole keyboard!
I work on a Mac. My ds decided one day to snap off all the keys on the keyboard. I managed to get most of them back on, but a couple never quite worked properly. I took my computer into the Apple store for another reason and the guy behind the counter says, oh, you need a new A key. He just put it on for me right there. I said, Uh, do you mind checking the k also? He replaced them right then and there.
I'm not sure that helps you since you're not talking about a Mac, but I was thrilled to have my keys back and working properly. It's so annoying to have a "bad" key. Did you try calling a store like Frye's or a smaller computer store?

I've had that happen as well, and IBM (well, Lenovo), sent me a new keyboard. It's surprisingly easy to put in yourself.

I hope it doesn't come to that. I'll give them a call tomorrow. I'm just too lazy to be on hold today.

Unless you have some whiz-bang expensive keyboard, they are so cheap it's probably faster and easier just to toss it and get a new one. Unless, of course, it's a Mac. :D

Actually, I think my keyboard was only $25 (if it hadn't been covered under extended warranty). Not quite as cheap as desktop keyboards, but not enough to really break the bank. And it was only a matter of unscrewing 3-4 screws and popping the old one out and the new one it. I was really impressed with myself! ;)
I have so many crumbs, dog hairs, etc. in this one that I should probably get a new one myself!

I called Dell and for a total of $29.70 (incl. tax and shipping), they are sending out a new keyboard for me to replace. The laptop is only about 6 months old, so I am mad at myself for ruining it. Oh well, at least it's an easy fix and not a large sum of money. I won't be picking at those keys again. Lesson learned. I'll be keeping the old keyboard so that I have spare parts, if the need arises though. :o

The replacement keyboard just arrived and there are no instructions. I remember when I placed the order, the customer service rep told me I could find the instructions online. Nope - they only have instructions on how to replace a key. :( I guess I will google the info.

Same thing happened to me. The letter 'E' stopped working. Of course it's never the 'X' or the 'Q' right? Since it was still under an extended warranty I made the mistake of letting Best Buy send it back to Sony in Chicago for repair which (HA,HA,HA) was only supposed to take 2 weeks. 6 weeks later I got my laptop back and now that I'm reading what an easy fix it is, one that you can do yourself, that will never happen again!

Actually, it's all fixed now. I googled, found the info, and it's done. Basically from the time of my last post until now, that's how quick it was. :)
