View Full Version : Friday Klatch! Mar 16

Good morning everyone!
We are awaiting a major snowstorm here this PM. I can't wait to combine Friday afternoon traffic with an inch-an-hour snowfall. Total up where I live is supposed to be 6 - 12 inches. This after 70 degree weather 2 days ago when I ran in shorts!
We are having a St. Pat's potluck lunch here at work today. I combined 2 cultures and brought a Greek spinach tortellini salad with feta, red onion, kalamatas, grape tomatoes, yellow peppers and of course the spinach tortellini. All with a lemon juice/red wine vinegar/olive oil vinagrette. I hope it's good and I hope most of it gets eaten or I'll be giving it to the neighbors (too much oil for me). I put a 1/4 cup on the 4 packages of cooked tortellinis last night so they didn't stick together and another 1/2 cup of the vinagrette. The salad seemed to be swimming even though I still had a 1/4 cup left of the dressing. I'm guessing the tortellini will soak it up this morning. Maybe I should have brought that extra 1/4 with me.

Good morning Loren and other klatchers!
I'm supposed to have the dinner group here tonight, but now we're all watching the weather. We're South of Boston and are expected to get 3 - 6". Matt and I might have to eat the big bowl of Texas Caviar I made as an appetizer. :p
Loren - The potluck sounds fun! I always liked days at work involving food. :D Your dish sounds great ... I love feta and olives.
I'm off to my part-time job in a bit. I had a "real job" interview yesterday and another on Monday. Hey, at least I'm keeping busy! :p

Hi Lauren! Were you excited about either of the jobs you interviewed for? I always think job interviews are two-way. You are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you.
Andy is going to a wedding tomorrow night - someone from work. They were all talking about the wedding and someone asked him if he was going and he said "what wedding?" and right after that an invitation appeared on his desk! So now he feels like he has to go, even though he doesn't socialize outside of work with his employees.
Then Sunday he is going skiing with friends. He and Erin went last weekend and the conditions were terrible, really icy. At least they'll have awesome snow this time.
Erin is going to yet another Sweet 16 birthday party Saturday. They are taking a limo into Boston and doing I don't know what. She's very psyched for the limo ride!
So I'm planning on doing some shopping or maybe going through my summer clothes and tossing what I don't want.

Loren- Send some snow this way! I would love it! It's been very springlike here, lots of temperature changes, rain, etc...so I guess I shouldn't complain. But, I didn't get to see a Wisconsin winter for the first time ever and I kind of miss it! And- aren't Sweet 16 parties unbelievable?!?! I can't believe the lengths some families go to! On the other hand, it really is a great celebration, and I hope she has fun!
Lauren- Texas Chili? mmmmmm- that sounds FANTASTIC right now :) Good luck with the interviews!
As for me, I work again all weekend! (I'm beginning to sound like a broken record :)). One of my collegues is off to Jamaica, and the rest of us have to pick up the slack. Poo on him :) At least we have a TV and can watch all of the tournament...
Otherwise, I need to devote my down time this weekend to laundry! It has totally piled up the past two weeks--and I've really got to get at it. I hate when that kind of stuff gets away from you. Alas, it'll keep me out of trouble ;)
Have a great weekend everyone!
Oh, and for the record- my name is Beth. I've started feeling a bit silly with everyone calling me "cumulus." :D

Not in a good mood today...:( very sad...:( :(
Yesterday evening DH's dad had a heart attack while he was in the hospital for something else unrelated...he also has internal bleeding and they can't figure out where it's coming from...his doctor thinks he has advanced colon cancer and if it is that after they do the tests today he only has DAYS to live...DH is devestated...we knew his health was going because his diabetes was getting worse and he was going to start dialysis soon but I guess no one was ready for THIS...I guess you're never ready but...you know what I mean...
So the weekend is going to be rough...DH is on vacation (I guess it's a good thing in a way because he can spend more time at the hospital with his dad)...I work next week and then I'm off with DH...so, God forbid, he does pass it's going to be a rough couple of weeks coming :( ...

Hi everyone!
Loren, good luck with the snow! I would be prefectly happy if it were to hang out over the mountains here for a couple of days! I hope Erin enjoys her limo ride. The last potluck we were planning here got snowed out by the blizzard.
Lauren, good luck with that Texas Caviar if you and Matt are left to eat it alone! Be sure to update us on anything you hear about the jobs.
Beth, I hear ya on the laundry. I have to use quarters to do mine and it gets a bit challenging at times. I knocked out a lot last night but still have sheets and towels to get done who knows when.
Betcha can't guess what I'm doing this weekend! ;) Actually, this is our second to last weekend coaching. We'll train tomorrow and then we have YSL championships on Sunday. We have a total of 14 kids in our group, 9 of whom made it to the championships! In fact 9 out of the 40 total being ours is huge. My co-coach and I are ecstatic, mainly because we won't get split up and have to deal with idiot sub coaches. :D I'm heading up to the Vail house after work so I'm all packed up and looking at my skis on top of my car out my office window. Man, I wish I could head up there now. :p

((((Erin, DH and family)))))) I'll be thinking of you all. DH's dad was probably in the best place to have a heart attack - already in the hospital so help was able to come quickly. I hope he doesn't have colon cancer. A friend of mine was recently diagnosed. She is only 48 and so too young to have started screening (age 50).
Beth - you are welcome to our snow. After our warm weather tease this week it's going to be very hard to shovel again.
I keep smelling my boss' beef stew she has in the crockpot in her office. I am starving but want to wait until our big lunch. I suggested that next time we do this, half of us bring breakfast/brunch stuff and the other half bring lunch stuff. That way we can eat all day :D but only have half as much food at lunch (we always over do it).

Oh, Erin I am so sorry to hear this! It's tough enough when we have to start dealing with the fact that our parents are getting older but to be confronted with this so suddenly is heartbreaking I'm sure. I hope that Marc gets to spend some quality time with his dad this weekend. In any case, I'm sure his dad knows just how much his son loves him. You all are in my prayers.

Loren - that salad sounds absolutely delish and the work pot luck sounds like great fun too. Wow - sweet 16s have changed since I was 16, which in the grand scheme of things, wasn't that long ago. I would have been losing it over a limo ride at that age too :D
Lauren - keep us posted on the job interviews and good luck. Busy is good :)
Beth - I hear you with the 'laundry during down time' thing too. I am trying to channel positive thinking though and imagine how satisfying it will be once it's done...
Erin - so sorry to hear about DH's dad :( Will be thinking of all you and sending lots of good energy your way (((erin)))
Robyn - I am so jealous of you saying that you have the skis on top of your car. So far away from my reality :)
It's going to be another busy weekend for me. Saturday is going to be filled with the aforementioned laundry and domestic chores. I'm then hopping on the bus in the afternoon to head up to Boston (well Framingham really), staying over night and up in the morning for another big theatre conference. I have a feeling that it's going to be a long day so I'll probably have to catch the last bus back on Sunday, which is 9:30pm, so I won't get back to NYC until 2:30am  Have warned work that I'll probably be in late on Monday.
Beth has inspired me. It seems so silly to be using Miss_Liss (in klatches particularly) so for the record - my name is Lizzie.

Lizzie - good luck getting up here this afternoon. The storm is supposed to be the worst this PM and evening. Is it snowing in NYC yet?
Which bus are you taking? Erin and I took the Greyhound bus last august when we visited NYC. it was only $25 each way. I balked at taking the Chinatown bus even though it's on $15 each way. Now that we've done the bus, I'm thinking we may take Amtrak next month or possibly drive to New Haven and take the commuter train from there. The bus was just so crowded and Port Authority has to be one of the worst places I've been.

Well.......I'll join in since I'm off due to the snow. My boss told me he was going to close the office early anyway and drive up to Killington to ski.
I would love to curl up and read a book but will catch up on *Spring* cleaning. Already cleaned one bathroom from head to toe.
No special plans for the weekend. BF was coming over tonight but it will be too dangerous to drive so alas I can curl up and read a book. Hopefully he'll make it tomorrow night.
Visiting a friend on Sunday whose husband just died :( She's having a hard time.
Erin - so sorry to hear about your FIL. I hope it isn't as serious as they think.

It was little bit of hail/ice pellets this morning (always lovely as they ping off your face in basically gale force winds on the way to the subway) and it's lightly snowing on and off so far *fingers crossed*. Don't have to head up until tomorrow so will see how it goes but I might get a slightly earlier bus because I don't want to be stuck and/or stressed out.
I'm getting the Greyhound from Port Authority to Framingham. It about $25-$30 each way. The main reason is because I don't know Boston very well and I specifically have to get to Framingham, so the train would mean getting a connecting bus/train to Framingham etc.

good morning everyone!
it started snowing last night here, and it's getting pretty bad right now, so they're closing my office at 2pm. WOO! i'm thinking that if it's REALLY bad out by lunchtime, i'll see if i can go a little earlier so i don't have to deal with all of the traffic/slush.
tonight we WERE supposed to go have dinner at a place that we might have our rehearsal dinner at in may, but i'm thinking we might have to postpone that. and i'm planning to make corned beef & cabbage in the crockpot for st. patty's day, and then trying to get some things done around the house for the rest of the weekend.
Loren - isn't this weather ridiculous? it was 70 here on wednesday, high 60's yesterday, and then last night it just got COLD. ugh!
Lauren - i love eating appetizers for main courses sometimes. hopefully the weather will ease up OR you can enjoy a nice night in!
Beth - good luck catching up on laundry! i've been doing that lately too, and then it takes ALL DAY to get it done
((((((Erin)))))) - sending you and your family good thoughts.
Robyn - have a BLAST skiing! i wish i wasn't such a wuss, because it LOOKS like a lot of fun :)
Lizzie - good luck traveling in the snow! at least you don't have to drive though!

Erin - sorry to hear about your FIL. Hopefully the prognosis will be better than you anticipate.
Sorry that all of you are being snowed on today. Its supposed to be in the mid-70's through the weekend, but they are forecasting rain for Monday. Guess I won't take my flannel sheets off my bed quite yet.
Dropped my car off this morning for a oil change and wheel alignment. I am working all weekend (this 7 day a week gig is HARD). I need to get my haircut as well, fortunately I don't need to be at work until 2 tomorrow so I can run some errands (grocery, farmers market, etc) in the morning.

it went really well! i was really excited when i first tried it on (over a year ago!) in the store because the sample size was right for me, but i was afraid it would be a LOT of work to take in the bust since the top is corset-y. but she just pinched in the sides and it looked perfect. it also helped that i had the bra that i'm going to wear that day, and the shoes (the first pair i tried on last weekend were the ones for me!). so seeing it all together with the veil and everything was crazy. i think then it really sunk in that i'm *actually* getting married. you'd think it would have hit me by now, but it hadn't :)

WOW, what a dress, SheRa! Truly gorgeous.
Tyra, I can imagine that working 7 days a week gets to be too much! Is this "for the duration"?
So sorry to hear about your FIL, Erin. Very sad and scary and stressful, those things.
Robyn, following your weekend postings, I can scarcely believed you lived so far away from all that - no wonder you were so eager to get back!
Weather's been gorgeous, so I'm determined to do something to take advantage of it. Farmers' market in the morning (need to buy honey for the swap!) then the stroll out to the beach in the afternoon. DBF lives about 10 blocks from the ocean, and sometimes we go for a walk along the beach there, but tomorrow I want to take this lovely walk through a nice green valley that ends at small beach in a cove. Very relaxing, and everything's in bloom. This is the picture of it I posted on the "spring" thread. I used to do the walk frequently, but now it's been at least a year, maybe more.

Loren, it sounds like Erin's going to have a blast at the party. I hope the snow won't be a problem.
Everyone with snow, wow! Good luck and be safe in that weather! I don't know how you manage.
This weekend I should be finishing up my Victorian ballgown that I posted about last year. The underwear, hoop, petticoats, skirt, and bodice are all complete. This weekend I'm adding trim to the bodice. I *hope* I can get trim added to the skirt before the 24th, when I'm going to a Victorian ball.
Here's an in progress picture: http://www.shawnandcolleen.com/colleen/IMG_0783_360x480.jpg. (I haven't ironed the skirt yet.)

It's the Tennessee Valley (http://www.millvalleylibrary.org/mvtown-tvt.html), Loren (no, not that one!) a couple of miles north of the Golden Gate. I'm hoping for a spring sighting of the bunnies! The lupine is in full bloom, and I just love seeing the deep purple patches with golden poppies scattered across the hillside. Also in bloom is this bizarre, Seuss-like flower call Pride of Madeira (http://www.karpel.org/Ron/ImageWeb/20040411_51_PrideOfMadeira.jpg). Don't know if they're regional or not, but they can be so odd - I've seen some that had to be 8 feet tall!

Canice, that walk looks gorgeous!
Thank you for the compliments on my dress! If you don't wear appropriate underwear, the gown won't look or hang right. You don't have to have the chemise and pantaloons under the corset, but I had to make them in a class anyway.
Canice, the Victorian ball (http://victoriandance.org/) that I'm going to is held three times a year in Pasadena, but there are others in the area, and other time periods as well.
There are also a ton of events in San Francisco, like the Victorian fantasy ball (http://www.gbacg.org/Current/Gaskells07.htm) and the Little Women picnic (http://www.gbacg.org/Current/LittleWomen.htm).

Robyn, following your weekend postings, I can scarcely believed you lived so far away from all that - no wonder you were so eager to get back!
You know, it's kind of funny, for the longest time I enjoyed coming to Colorado to visit family and hadn't skied regularly in years. I think it was the burnout from the racing days (when your dad is the head coach you don't get much of a break). I couldn't believe how hard it hit me when I came out in December of 2004 and took one run down the mountain and knew I needed to come back. Even then, I had never coached and didn't even think of it. It was a new friend I met here who got me into it. But, now, I can't imagine my life without it. In fact, my mom asked me last night if I would come met her in Santa Fe in a couple of weeks. Problem is, it's the second to last weekend of the season, NO WAY is she getting me away then. :p Luckily she understood.
Colleency, the dress is so cool, enjoy the ball!
Ashley, your dress is stunning!
Tyra, I hear ya on the 7 days a week, it definitely gets rough.

Hopefully, I'll be able to start taking the Conservator classes in May (the spring session was filled). That will start me on the track of becoming a Conservator of Person/Estate. I have started working alone in the field doing companion visits/case management. My next step there is to learn the necessary medical parts (reading charts, notes, etc).
Target is a stop-gap (I hope). I'm doing it for benefits and to help bring in money. Once I get to a decent billing rate (I'm making half of what I used to and I'm only averaging 18/20 hours a week) in the real job...I'll see what I'll do with Target. I don't mind the hours...but I would like a day to myself.
Canice - I thought that was Tennesse Valley. I haven't been there in over 20 years :o

Chiming in a little late! I just got back from a funeral in Buffalo, NY -- I think I was lucky to make it out! Still feeling sad -- my girlfriend lost her husband to one of those heart attacks that, if you'd been standing right next to him when it happened, you couldn't have saved him... she's got 2 teenage girls, and they are all devastated! :(
Ashley, your dress is gorgeous! I can just picture you in it!!!!
Colleen C. -- You MADE that! What a seamstress you are!
Erin -- I'm so sorry to hear about FIL! Hopefully, this will not be as serious as it sounds! (((((hugs!)))))
Oh! Canice! Beautiful photo -- sounds like a good walk!
Tyra -- I admire your energy... working 7 days is a tough way to go! I hope you get your classes, and that your billings go up, so Target can just be a place to shop for you!
To anyone I've missed, Have a great weekend!:)

Ashley - what a beautiful dress! When is the wedding?
it's may 20th. our 7 year anniversary (for dating) is tomorrow, so i don't think things will be much different after the wedding. just a nice big party :)
i'm glad my dress has gotten the CLBB stamp of approval! ;)
colleen - i'm SOOO jealous of your victorian ball! that sounds like a wonderful event! and that's great that you were able to finish such an involved gown (with all the undergarments!). i assume you'll be posting pictures here after it's over, right? :)

Horrible, horrible, horrible :( so sorry to hear about your friend....just goes to show how fragile life is and how you need to live every day to the fullest and not let the little things (or people) get to you...
Hopefully the rest of the weekend is better than your saturday! (((hugs)))
