I am in the midst of planning a family trip for the first week in August. The plan is to drive to the Mystic, CT area for the first two nights, then drive up to Bar Harbor for 3 nights, and on our way back we want to travel to the White Mountains in New Hampshire for 2 nights.
The lodging is taken care of in Bar Harbor, but I am now trying to find 2 nights in the Mystic area and 2 nights in the White Mountain area. Does anyone have any recommendations for hotel/cottage/cabin rentals (without breaking the bank)? There will either be 5 or 6 of us. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Any kids with you on this trip? If so, ages? I can help you out with the White Mountains.

I stayed over in a motel in Mystic several years ago when I went to a wedding there. I don't recall the name of it, but it was really inexpensive and it was right near the aquarium -- it may have even been a Howard Johnson's or something and it was fine. Mystic is small, so don't worry about being far away from anything. I realize that's not a great help, but it's such a tourist-driven area, that I think even the inexpensive motels are fine.

I've stayed at a Day's Inn in Mystic and it was very nice... inside corriders/cont. breakfast... clean and close to everything.

Yes, we will have kids/teens with us.
The youngest is now 10.
The teenagers are 14 and 17.
Adults - 20 (?), 40, and 41.
It will be interesting to have everyone on this trip.
DH and I might need another vacation after this one. :)

I've been to the White Mountains once, and didn't know much about it before I went. I was really surprised by the amount of traffic, especially trying to get through Conway on Rt. 16. If much of what you want to do is north of Conway, I'd look for a place to stay North of there too. We were just south of Conway (we were camping) and were surprised at how often we got stuck in traffic.
It is a beautiful area, though, and I would definitely go back.

you know, I forgot how much people associate Conway with the idea of visiting the White Mountains. Yes, because there is basically one road in and one road out---it can get pretty congested. Of course it depends on what you want to do. If you want to go on some hikes, see some of the landmarks/natural attractions and are pretty happy to just see some scenery, etc. I don't think you NEED to stay in Conway. However, that is the area that has the most restaurants and hotels so it might be the best option for you. Some other places to look at would be:
Lincoln, NH. This one I've looked at more than once, but our place is in the White Mountains, so unlikely we will get a chance to stay here. It does not appear to be fancy, but very family oriented. Lincoln is also located in an area that is handy for many different attractions.

The InnSeason Resort on South Mountain looks nice (I've toured them) but a little pricey. Pollard Brook is another of their resorts that is probably a little more affordable.
If you do end up in Conway, this place is nice. I've stayed here a few times.

Otherwise, you might do well to look on cyberrentals and see what's available. There are so many private homes/cottages and condos available and depending on your dates, just a couple days may work okay for the owners.
good luck

I live just outside Mystic and work in downtown Mystic.
Mystic isn't a large town so no matter where you stay you will be able to get to things easily.
AmeriSuites - Just off the highway (I95) but a bit away from town - like two miles. A Suite might be a good option with teens
Comfort Inn - again just off the highway and probably less $
Days Inn - nice and just off the highway
Econo Lodge - would not recommend
Howard Johnson - would not Recommend
Inn at Mystic - very nice and very pricey
Mystic Hilton - right across the street from the Aquarium and Olde Mystick Village - pricey but nice
Residence Inn - think they may have suites - just off the highway
Whaler's Inn - In downtown Mystic - very nice but am sure pricey
Lots to do and see in the area for all ages. I think you will enjoy your stay.

There is a great casino near Mystic, called Mohegan Sun. The hotel is so beautiful, a must see. It's all one complex, but so big that the kids would never see the casino part or it, great entertainment at night for the two of you, incredible 5 star restaurants including Todd's English's, even a Martini bar.
Are you staying at the Bar Harbor Inn? Have you been there before? Don't miss Acadia National Park, you can spend alot more than 3 days and still not see everything in Bar Harbor. Soooo beautiful! Enjoy. Debbie

a chain called The Hawthorn (might also be listed as "Hawthorn Suites").***Be careful not to add an "e" at the end of Hawthorn.
This is a NE chain and their prices are very reasonable. We usually stay at one in Massachusetts. They offer suites and rooms with two beds. Breakfast is always included and there is usually an indoor pool on premises. I'm not sure if these are located within your vacation area but you might want to check priceline.com. We have booked directly through Hawthorn and through priceline and priceline usually beats their price (be advised--its crazy but if you book on a Friday through--whatever, the rates are usually more expensive. HOWEVER, if you book online from Saturday on, you can get the lower rate and then you have to go back and add your Friday--which usually will also give you the lower rate--it sounds crazy, I know but we've been doing this a long time). The accommodations are very basic (like a Hampton Inn, Marriott..etc.) but the hotel is always clean, well-lit and the breakfasts are decent--and free! We also travel with older kids and they use the pool and the weight room.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. For Mystic, I am going to look at the links and check the information out. If I can find a suite at one of the local hotels, that may be my best bet. If I can't find a suite, maybe I can book two cheap rooms on priceline. I have always gotten a nice hotel when I booked a room through priceline.
Yes, we are staying at the Bar Harbor Inn. I went there last year with my Mom and had a great time. Everyone was really nice to us. This year the whole family is going to get to check it out. I know DH will love it.
I am excited to go to NH. The photos of the White Mountains look beautiful. I definitely want to check out the information about the Indian Head Resort.
