View Full Version : And yet another tipping question....

This comes up almost every time I go to the salon, and I've finally gotten exasperated over how to handle it.
Today I had an appointment for a manicure with my nail tech and a lip/eyebrow wax with my aesthetician (same salon). The manicure took an hour and cost $18. The wax took 10 minutes and cost $30. When I went to pay, the total came to $48, and I added a roughly 20% tip (my customary), or $10. When she asked how I wanted the tip split, I told her $4 for the nail tech, $6 for the aesthetician. But then I start feeling horribly guilty: my nail tech spends WAY more time with me than my aesthetician, so even a 20% tip seems chintzy. But then again, I don't want to tip way more than 20% and end up tipping almost as much as the service itself. And I also don't feel like I should "short" my aesthetician just because the service is by nature faster. They both do a great job.
What would/do you do? I almost wish my nail tech would just charge more. :o I'm thinking I should just get over the guilt of "only" tipping 20% and keep doing what I've been doing.

Do you feel the tip is split adequately by the degree of difficulty of the service? Perhaps the one with more training should get the larger percentage, rather than by price... or just split it 5/5...

What would you tip if you just got the manicure by itself? Would you tip $4.00? If so, tip that and don't feel bad about it.

This is what I was going to say....

I always tip 20%. So the times I have gone in just for a manicure, I usually tip $4. Sometimes $5, just because the $4 seems so chintzy. And I always feel guilty about it. Sounds like I just need to get over that.

OMG, don't get me started on my tipping rant... Tipping is the stupidest custom on the planet. Why not pay people a living wage instead of making us guess who gets tipped and who doesn't? Nobody tips me for doing my job...
Oh yeah, I wasn't going to rant. :o

I'm with you Lisa. Or, at least tipping should be based on something rather than the cost of the service. Why should a $20 meal have a smaller tip than a $30 meal at the same restuarant with the same server and level of service. In this case, I would tip a higher percent to for the manicure and lower for the other service even thought the cost is higher because of the time involved for each service.

Amen to that! And I'll keep it there..........I go off into tipping rants too easily........ :D
Eva - If you do decide you want to tip the manicurist more, that's fine! If you don't want anyone to feel slighted, you could hand the tip over yourself and no one need know you tipped over 20% for one and not the other.
In any case, you are being generous and should be comfortable with whatever you decide - it's your hard earned money and no one should be guilted into doing anything they don't want to do.

LOL I always get frustrated trying to figure out what is generous and appropriate in all these different situations. Tipping is one thing that is definitely done in a more reasonable way here. It is not "expected," and if it is done at all it is really just a token, not a substitute for a reasonable wage.

As a stylist myself, a lip wax really doesn't require too much talent. The heat of the wax in that service is the only thing that really requires knowledge. It is nothing like eyebrows, there is an art to that. I charge 22.00 for both. On average I get a 3.00 tip. I wouldn't tip 20 % on that service. Where I go for a manicure she spents an hour and does an incredible hand massage. She charges 18.00 and I give her 5.00. Plus, I think when you get a manicure there is a closer relationship. You are face to face for an hour. A wax service, you are in and out. Your eyes should be closed for the brows and your mouth should be closed for the lip!

I agree. I disdain the sight of the ubiquitous tip jars that clutter countertops across this country. They are even are showing up at places where tips weren't customary in the past.
Where will tip jars show up next? Hospital emergency rooms? Toll booths? Or... maybe even confessionals. :D
Sorry for the rant.

room?

If the kids don't soon start getting foolish again with leaving money in their pants pockets, the tip jar is going in the hamper.... good idea
OP -If you had the tasks done individually - there wouldnt be a question, you would tip 20 percent and not think about it. I think that is how you should decide.
Speaking of tipping....my eldest worked at Ruby Tuesday's restaurant last summer for a bit. Each day at the end of her shift when she clocked out on the computer, it would tell her how much of her tips she had to share with the other employees. She had to give a porton of her tips to the hostess for seating (based on how many she sat in her section), the salad bar girl (based on how many people ordered salad), the bartender (based on everytime she moved). The bartender was in charge of giving out the cartons of chocolate milk. One day the only bar order she had throughout her entire lunch shift was when 4 kids at the same table got chocolate milk and a refill each - So the bartender had to open the fridge twice. That calculated to the computer that my daughter owed the bartender 3.00:eek: .
That was the beginning of the end of that job.
