DD is going to the dentist for the first time next week. I just realized the person we are seeing isn't a "DDS" but a "DMD". What does DMD stand for? Just want to make sure they have as much education as a DDS!

Thanks!

A DMD is the same as a DDS. It just depends on which university you receive your degree from. This is from the American Dental Association web page:

What is the difference between a DDS and a DMD?

The DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) are the same degrees. The difference is a matter of semantics. The majority of dental schools award the DDS degree; however, some award a DMD degree. The education and degrees are the same.

My dentist is a DMD. DMD & DDS are the same. I checked with my previous DDS and the American Dental Association and found the only difference is the wording of the degree. DDS is Doctor of Dental Surgery, and DMD is Doctor of Dental Medicine.

WHich means this is not correct--they went to dental school, not medical school.
