Disclaimer: We live in the desert and have awful soil, so our yard looks like heck! Please don’t judge me :o
We have this growing in ever increasing amounts all over our yard:

Is it a weed or grass? DH says he planted some random grass filler, so he thinks it may be some sort of grass that’s taking over. This is what it looks like pulled:

This is what our other grass looks like.

Any thoughts??

Dh says that best as he can tell from your pictures, it looks like filler grass. The flowery tops is the filler grass going to seed. He says the filler is a quick growing grass that is used to keep your "real grass seed" from being eaten by birds or dying out. It's sort of a protectant- the filler seed grows up first and quickly. It's got a short life span, so if you haven't planted a sturdy grass seed that's region specific, you'll want to throw that down very soon while the filler is there to protect it.
DH also says that if you've got a college nearby with a botany/plant science degree that they would be a good resource for information on region specific grass.

Looks like grass that needs to be mowed. :) Definitely grass that has gone to seed.

Your local Extension office will be able to identify it for you, and help you with your lawn troubles. They are probably located in or near your county courthouse.
Check this site to find your office.

Thanks so much for all the help....I'll talk to DH about throwing down some other grass (the birds DO eat it when we've put down grass seed before....Aa-ha :o )
And I also emailed the extension office.
We mow once a week (by "we" I mean "DH"), I don't think I could get him to mow any more than that!
