Has anyone used plexiglass as a cover for a patio structure or pergola? Our contractor suggested using tinted plexiglass as a roof for a pergola-like patio structure. We are worried that it might look cheap, get scratched and/or damaged, might be hot, etc. I'd appreciate any feedback from BBers who have experience with this idea. Thanks!

I've used a 3' X 3' square, clear, Plexiglass above the outdoor ceiling fan to keep water out of the motor. Plexiglass will collect dust, dirt, pollen, and leaves. I don't think I would use clear. Dark tint might be OK.

I have two different friends that have covered patios. One has a slight tint and the other just has clear. Not sure if it is plexiglass - for some reason I think it is another type of glass. Both covers are the best investment I have ever seen (especially considering that we live in Seattle). Their kids can go outside to play whenever and it doesn't matter that it is raining. They also are able to hose off the glass so if leaves stick to it they just need to bring out the hose.

My brother lives in Seattle, and had a glass type patio cover installed 2 years so they would still have light coming in. They absoutely love it. When I think of plexiglass I vision that corroguted material. I dont know if thats what ou are talking about.

I have that Corogated (wavy) Plexiglass as the roof of my Work Shead. It is sort of a lean to in front of the Green house. We built it to hide the Greenhouse from being seen from the front driveway, to hide the uglyness of it we made it look like a garden room, with lattic walls and a longer facia board set just an inch above to hide the plastic. I love it, it is two colors, alternating green to help keep it cool and clear to allow just enough sunlight. Makes for a great working space when there comes a summer shower.
Course I live in the country and have no neighbors who can see the house.

I asked my friend what she has and here is her answer:
American Solarium Deck 'Canopy' or cover ( a Deglass Acrylic roof).

Glad I could help. When I first heard of my friends doing this type of cover (before I saw it) I thought it would look horrible (think that weird, wavy greenish stuff). They both have homes probably valued around $800,000 - $900,000 and it really adds a lot to their usability. I say go for it!
