I never met this woman (I don't think), but I feel very sad for her and my extended family. My great aunt (married to my grandmother's brother) went missing right before Christmas a few months ago. Her house had been burned to the ground, and no remains were found. She lived alone, and did not have a history of mental illness nor was she prone to wandering. Shortly after her house burned down, another elderly woman in her neighborhood was reported missing.
Yesterday, police in Erie, NY, found two bodies stuffed into barrels at a warehouse. One was my great aunt, and one was the other lady. My great aunt had been strangled and the other had been hit on the head. The search is still on for the perpetrator.
Neither woman had lots of money or valuables, and I'm sure they didn't have enemies...
I just can't imagine making it all the way to 89 years old, and having it end like that.
Please think a good thought today for Geraldine, who was probably a nice old lady and didn't deserve to meet the fate she did.
Thanks:o

  :( Oh, no, what a terrible way to go! I do hope they find whoever did it before the person decides to strike again. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

What an awful story! Two, I'm assuming sweet, old ladies didn't deserve that horrific ending. I hope the detectives are able to find the perpetrator(s) soon.
Yikes! How awful. Oh, I am so sorry to hear that. What a terrible thing to happen. I'll send a nice thought out to Geraldine.

Oh, how horrible :( I don't even know what to say except that its surely a show of cowardice to do something like that to someone who can't possibly defend themselves.
My DH's great aunt lived in an assisted living community before she died and had a checkbook stolen from her. It turned out that it was an employee who did it, and DH's aunt took the great aunt in to court so that the judge could see who the victim was: a 90-year old, 4 foot, 9 inch +\- 90 lb woman with very severe osteroporisis.

Oh Rebecca, what a sad, sad story. Regardless if she was a close relative or one you just had knowledge of, it's still so very sad. What horrible beasts that exist in our society that would perpetrate such atrocities on our elderly. It just really sickens me that such acts occur. I hope that neither woman suffered too much.

I am so sorry that it ended like this. There are some sick people in the world. My condolences to you and your family.
OMG, I just got chills -- I had heard this story on the news yesterday and couldn't stop thinking about how horrible it was.... My mind can't even process the level of evil people can possess. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Oh, Rebecca, that is so very sad!!! I hope that the creep who did this to your great aunt and the other woman is caught soon. I just cannot imagine commiting this kind of violence against another human being, much less an 89 year old woman!
My thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and the family of the other woman.
Hugs,
Cheryl

OMG- That is a crazy story.
I hope they find the creep(s) that did this  . I'll be thinking of Geraldine today.
That's terrible. :(
I echo what's been said already and ask that they may rest in the peace that was denied them in their passing and that the families will find closure and comfort.

How awful! <sympathy> And yet, the story rings a bell in our lives, too. DH's great aunt's house was broken into, and she was pummelled with a brass candlestick her DH had made for her. She didn't survive... Good thoughts for Geraldine...

It sickens and saddens me that they are those who prey on the elderly like this. I hope they catch this person and get Jack Bauer to torture him. I'm so sorry for your loss, regardless of whether you knew her or not.
