View Full Version : Dirty Diapers- How do you store/dispose?

When DD was first born, I used the diaper champ. After a while, I thought it smelled a bit, so I switched to the diaper genie- which fixed the issue.

DD is on a very restricted diet. Both her gastroenterologist, and her primary care commented on how bad her diapers smell (which honestly surprised me- they smell dirty diapers all day long- especially the gastro). Anyway, she is very regular. About 4-6 full dirty diapers a day (not just a little bit).

Her room does not smell when the diaper genie is shut, but when I open it- wowee! Our garage is down three flights of stairs and through the basement, so it is not practical to bring each diaper down there.

I am thinking of switching back to the diaper champ, and putting dirty diapers in a ziploc bag first. (My DH is a huge environmentalist, so I think all that wasted plastic will make his head spin.)

I also bleach the inside of the genie twice a week to get rid of lingering smells.

Any suggestions for me?

When my kids were still in diapers I used the bags the newspaper came in.
Good luck!

Such a fun problem to have!

We use the diaper champ for pee diapers only- like you, we found that it did not contain the odor of dirty diapers. So, we take our dirty diapers to the outside trash immediately. That isn't practical for you w/ all those stairs!

Ziplocks do work to contain the odor (we pack a few in the diaper bag in case we need to dipose of a dirty diaper while at a friend's house) but going through 4-6 a day would be a lot. I wonder if a gallon-size bag would hold several diapers- you could just add to it through the day and then take it to the garage at the end of the day. That's what we do in hotel rooms so that we aren't overwhelmed by poopy diaper odor- we pack them into a large ziplock, then place that in the trash when we leave the room for the day.

The only other thing I can think of is some kind of container that has an airtight seal, that could be emptied daily and reused...not sure what that would be though!

I have always just saved the plastic grocery bags from the store, and then tightly tied up the smelly diapers in one of those and tossed them in the regular trash. I have never had any problem with odors from the trash can, and I'm really glad I didn't mess with one of those diaper gadgets.

Something I have done to minimize the smell is to dump the diaper into the toilet before I throw it away. I use grocery bags and immediately carry them out to the garbage. That might be an idea. I carry diapers out every day, sometimes more often than that.

I take them out right away, too....wet diapers go into the regular trash, which goes out once a day, and poopy ones go into plastic grocery bags in into the outside garbage cans. The Diaper Genie was no match for my kid's poosmell.

We didn't have a diaper genie or anything that required special bags. Ours just used regular trash bags. (Not sure if that's an option for you.) Have you tried the Glad trash bags with Odor Shield? They really do wonders in the kitchen. And my SIL uses them in her nursery. It's amazing how well they work.

When I do use disposables (about one a day) I dump the poop out into the toilet first. I think that's what's reccommended for health reasons, and it sure keeps my daughter's room smelling better!

We don't use the diaper champ anymore upstairs either - too smelly! We use the plastic grocery bags - and take it downstairs at the end of the day with the diapers. We put our diaper champ in the garage for the diapers we change downstairs on the main level.

I have the Diaper Champ too.

I have a flat air freshener in the bottom of the bucket. I can't remember the name of it, but it is an odor absorbing one that has charcoal in it. I spray it down with Lysol when I change the bags. I probably wash it out every other week.

So far I haven't had any problems with it smelling. Yeah, there is a bit of a stink when I open it but I haven't had a problem with it smelling up her room.

Thanks for all of your crappy advice! :p :D Ok, I couldn't resist! :D

Those are great ideas. I will start dumping the diapers, and using grocery bags.
