The new Dyson Slim upright vacuum, that is! ;)

Thanks to everyone here for keeping the Dyson line up front with outstanding recommendations. My dreadful Hoover bit the dust, and while I had some difficulty crossing the bridge to spending nearly $500 on something as pedestrian as a vacuum, I knew the time had come.

After reading the last thread looking for recommendations, I researched the Sears Progress, but it turned out to be unavailable, apparently because of the CR recommendation.

I also had trepidations about an upright, not just because I've never used one, but I felt it was too large to manuever around most of my living spaces. I then discovered the new Dyson model DC-18, the Slim. This looked about right: while the power is the same as the larger Dysons, the price isn't much less, $469 at Amazon with free shipping.

Its arrival was a Big Event and I set right to cleaning up several weeks of dust because I'd procrastinated so long thinking the Hoover would mysteriously come back to life. The results are truly amazing, esp. given the accumulation. I did a runner first and it immediately filled the cup with mostly dog hair! When I was done, the house looked virtually new.

The one disadvantage with this smaller version is the cup does need to be emptied more often, but with a simple two button procedure, it's no big deal really.

Again, thanks for all the Dyson recommendations here!

Bob

Very jealous here! I'm waiting for my Hoover to bite it to get the Dyson. The Hoover doesn't suck anything up and with two dogs that is a very bad thing!!! Enjoy!!!

I bought the yellow Dyson back in January and I love it! It is kind of horrifying the first time you use it, though, isn't it? :D

Glad you like it!

Bob, Enjoy! I used my Animal (purple one) just yesterday to vaccum the cushions of the FL Room Furniture. I just couldn't put those hairy things back in the FL Rm with that fresh coat of paint. Anyway, Vaccuming lead to Washing all the woodwork, blinds, windows inside, outside today and scrubbing the floor.

It is an amazing machine and I'm glad DH spent the $$ for it. I'm always amazed at how much Dog Hair I have in my house, may be why DH's nose is always running.

Congratulations on the new slimmer you! The cleaner home too.

I love my Dyson. I have Big Yellow. My favorite part? Seeing how much crud it picks up. Almost makes vacuuming worth it.

Enjoy.

Congratulations on your Dyson, Bob!
I was one of the people participating a vacuum discussion awhile back, and as a result we got a purple Dyson Animal. It's wonderful.
Well, I admit that I have yet to have firsthand experience... because my husband enjoys it so much, he has happily done all the vacuuming! I remember another person saying that her husband enjoyed power tools, and this is just like another power tool. My DH feels similarly.
I actually would probably enjoy this aspect too, but for now it's one less thing to do and that's good for me at the moment.

I was interested to know they had a slim model- sounds great!

Bob - Just wanted to know if you're still loving your Dyson Slim?

After trying to be frugal and going with a Hoover Windtunnel a couple of years ago, I can't stand it anymore and am now considering a Dyson. I want the new vacuum to be lighter in weight and to be more maneuverable than the Hoover, but also do a fantastic job on pet hair.

The DC-15 Animal looks great for ease in steering, but the Slim is lighter - I'm waffling between the two. I'd really like to get the lower priced DC-14 yellow, but I think it's too bulky.

How easy is it to maneuver the Slim in small places?

Do you think it does a really great job on the pet hair? We have A LOT of pet hair. Obscene amounts. I keep saying that my next pet will be a naked mole rat.

With my Hoover, I feel like I have to clean the filter pretty regularly to keep it working well. I mistakenly thought you didn't have to mess with cleaning filters with Dyson vacuums, but I see that there is a filter. How often do you clean it?

Any other comments welcome.

I just KNEW you were talking about weight - but I didn't realize that it would be about the weight of an Animal! :D

Yes, Alysha, the Slim does a great job with dog hair, as the two Spaniels (one part time, really) here shed plenty, but I think if there's as much as you suggest, the Slim might not be suitable, because the cup is so much smaller than the full-sized versions, you'd need to be constantly emptying it. Even here, I usually have to do it two or three times each outing, but I must admit that I'm not the most frequent vacuumer there is, much as I like the Slim, so it fills pretty quickly.

It is easy to manuever in small spaces, but I must say that while it's smaller and lighter than the other models, I wouldn't exactly call it a lightweight. I also haven't found cleaning the filter a big problem, because I do that more or less routinely and never really think about how often it needs to be done.

HTH,
Bob

Bob, hope you and your vacuum are very happy together!

What a tease with your title! I started to get all bent out of shape, thinking "here he's always eating all this good stuff---AND he loses weight? Not fair!"
