I am definitely interested in a supper club in Sarasota. How do we get started?

Hi, I'm Debbie.

I wrote the initial post. So far there are 4 of us in the Sarasota area interested in a supper club. I would like to wait until we have at least 2 other people interested before we officially meet to discuss how we would like to function, but,in the meantime, we can share ideas in this forum.

Lunch might be difficult for both professionals and Moms so drinks after work might be more convenient. I would like to wait until we have at least 6 interested people before we formally meet.

Is anyone here originally from Florida? Not me, I'm originally from New Jersey with a stop off for a few years in Maryland. What got you interested in Cooking Light? Me, I just love interesting foods.

Hi. I responded to a notice on the bulletin board back in May from someone named Cheryl and she and I have been waiting for others since then. I e-mailed her last night and should be hearing from her to find out if she is still interested. Also, my e-mail address is posted here so we can communicate at length -- more than this space allows. I grew up in New Orleans and I've always enjoyed cooking and entertaining. I am ready to get started anytime.

P.S. Lunch on a Saturday would be better for me than drinks after work. Also, I'm really allergic to cigarette smoke so please let me know if that's going to be a problem for anyone.

Mollie,
Saturday for lunch isn't the best for me but I could probably swing in. Boy, I would love to taste some good Louisiana cooking if you are up for it. Unfortunately the closest I have gotten to New Orleans is San Antonio, Texas for a visit and that is a whole different cuisine. Starting sooner than later sounds good to me too. When should we meet and where? Do you want to go with deli-type food or more exotic. How about some input? I know a good place for deli-type food but I'm open to anything. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I just received and e-mail from someone who was interested in a Bradenton club, but so far there are only 2 of us. If he/she is interested in joining Sarasota, we have our 6th person. Even if that person doesn't join, we have 5 now - so why not get the ball rolling. I bet we'll pick up a few more people along the way.

Any nominations for a place to meet? I'm not real familiar with the Sarasota area, so I have no ideas. I think a weekend evening will probably be best for the most people. Let's set a date!!

Wow!! What a great response for the Sarasota supper club. My suggestion would be Mediterraneo's next Friday night. What do you all think?

Sorry Debbie,
Unfortunately, I can not do a Friday Night. I have a dance class that night. Mediterrano has good food, but unfortunately it doesn't work for me. I think staying with the Northern section of town is a good idea because we have people from Bradenton in the group too. Downtown does work into that catagory.

Debbie,
Unfortunately Friday night doesn't work for me because I have a dance class. I do agree that the Downtown area as well as anything in the northern section of Sarasota would work best for everyone. Sorry

Anyplace downtown works for me. How about ElGreco or C'est LaVie or Chef's Corner Cafe. Or Caragiulo's. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town this Friday until Tuesday, the 18th. Then, I'll be leaving again on the 22nd (Saturday) till about the 27th. So, Friday the 21st would be good for me. Or the following weekend. After that I'm available anytime. Maybe we could all post the times we are available. That might make setting a date easier. I'll e-mail Cheryl again and encourage her to post a reply to the bulletin board. Sorry I'm not available this Friday. I really am looking forward to getting together. Hope we can work it out soon. Mollie

P.S. Rina -- hope you had a great weekend!

Hi Everyone! How about Tuesday evening the 11th at 5:30 at Tropical Thai on Main Street?

dveghte

Works for me. How about everyone else?
Since we all will have to be committed to a monthly date for our get togethers (ie: 3rd Thursday of the month)it would help with the planning if everyone checked their schedules and post a day and week of the month that they can commit to. That way if this Tuesday isn't convenient for the group we can plan on meeting on our agreed upon monthly day. Any other suggestions/comments?

That sounds good to me, but I may be a little late. I have to wait for my husband to get home to take charge of the kids before I leave. Can someone who will be there on time do something chees-y like tie a balloon to their chair so we can find eachother??!! I'm looking forward to meeting (hopefully) all of you.

Hi everybody.

Nobody ever said one way or another but, are our husbands/significant others included in the supper club? I would prefer if they were. Does anybody else have any ideas on this? A weekend evening would be best for me. It's hard for me to prepare for guests on a weeknight. We can talk about it tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting you all. Mollie

Hi everyone! This is just to make it official -- our first dinner will be on September 1st at M's house in Parrish. Seems like this is a good date for everyone so far. Still have to check with Rina when she gets home.

M, let us know what you decide on for a theme. We'll need some good directions to your house, too. Spending this time in New Orleans is making me think of a Cajun/Creole theme when we have it at my house. It will be a challenge to make some of these recipes low fat!

Keep in touch! Mollie

I'm thinking Dump Trucks for a theme...no...wait, that for my soon-to-be-2-year-old's birthday party the next day!

Anyway, how about "An Elegant Dinner Party". I'll be making Individual Beef Wellingtons from the CL 5 Star cookbook. I've always wanted to try them, so I guess I'll experiment on you guys!! Let me know what you plan to make & if you need any special equipment (chances are I have it!!)

If your e-mail address is not listed in your profile, please e-mail it to me so I can send you directions to my house. I don't want to post it here for all the world to see.

Looking forward to seeing all of you on Sept. 1!!

Didn't want you to think that no one read your posting. I thing it is an excellent theme. Please let us know what you were thinking in terms of what else we should bring...ex. appetizer? salad? # of sides? dessert? What are your ideas as far as topics? I'm starting to look at what would be appropriate for the theme. Sounds like fun!! I will e-mail you with my e-mail address.

Dear Everyone:

I am now back from Philadelphia and anxiously awaiting the supper club get togethers. I noted that you have set aside Sept. 1st as our first date and look forward to hearing more about the details. I'd really like to know further though, if our club is going to be couple oriented or for just the ladies...quite honestly, this was something I'm doing for myself and my hubby really would not be into the cooking "thing" so if I'm not going to fit in...let me know. I hope it all works out though, as I am anxious to be part of the group and to get to know all of you. Please keep me posted.

Rina,
I think we decided on just the "ladies" & every once in a while inviting the guys - maybe we can let them grill one month!! My husband won't be joining us because this is a way for me to get out of the house without my 2 small children...I need my "Mom Time", so my husband has to stay home and babysit!!

Sept. 1 Menu Update:
I'm making the main course (Individual Beef Wellingtons) & provide the wine, Debbie will be bringing a veggie.

I think we will probably need an appetizer, starch, dessert & maybe a salad. Let me know what you guys have in mind.

Hi M and everyone else. Just a quick question: Are we bringing the supplies and preparing and cooking at your house or are we making it ahead of time. I was under the impression from our get-together that we would bring the supplies and prepare and cook together. For me an appetizer sounds great. I will be away for the next week so no need to rush the response. Thanks for the info. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/cool.gif

Let me know about whether or not I make it there...it's very simple..."birdnests" made from filo dough with a little sugar and topped with of course lo-fat iceream and toppings...let me know if this is alright...also I'll need directions, but thought you might want to email us each separately so that it is more "private", so to speak...what d'ya think?

OK, let me see if I have this right!
Appetizer - Cindy
Main dish - M.
Salad - Mollie
Vegetable - Debbie
Dessert - Rina

I think we are out of members, so I can make rice or potatoes or something. I figured everyone would bring the ingredients to my house and we would all cook together - that's how they did it in the magazine! My other suggestion would be to bring a copy of the recipie for everyone.

I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone. I'll e-mail you all directions soon.

Hi Everyone,
My name is Cheryl and I originally started corresponding with MollieM about the Sarasota Supper Club. I was away on vacation for a month and was unable to go to the meeting last month.I am sorry that I missed it. I would love to join in with everyone. I have read the bulletin and the menu sounds great. Perhaps I could bring a starch? I live in Venice, about 30 minutes south of Sarasota. Please let me know if you have room for one more. I also am doing for me and my husband has no interest in cooking, but the idea of inviting significant others once in a while would be fun. Please let me know soon if I can join so I can start looking at my recipes. Are we cooking together or bringing the dish all cooked? I hope to hear from someone soon.

We would love to have you! I think 6 will work out well for our menu planning. How about bringing a starch??!!

I'm about 20 minutes north of Sarasota, so you'll have a bit of a drive, but I think everyone else is in Sarasota. I'm looking forward to meeting you.

HEY EVERYONE -
I'm thinking 6 for a start time - so we can eat before midnight!! What time will most of you be able to make it by? Let me know.

Hi everyone! If it's not too much trouble, I think 6:30 would be better for me because I work in Bradenton and would want to come home and change first. It will probably take us about 35 minutes to get up to Palmetto. Is anyone interested in riding together? If this time is inconvenient for you, M, let me know and I can make it for 6:00. I know you have little kids and a party the next day and you probably don't want to be up all night. See you soon. Mollie

Hi Everyone and Cheryl-
I am glad to see that you have joined us. Just got back from vacation and was thrilled to see 38 posts on our supper club. I would be interested in driving together too Mollie. If it works for you and Cheryl we could meet either at the Clark Rd exit or Bee Ridge Rd exit. I am east of 75 between both. 6:30 is a great time for me too. We could meet at 5:45 or so if that is convienent Mollie. Looking forward to meeting everyone and cooking together. Haven't figured out my appetizer yet but will start looking through my many Cooking Light Magazines and Cookbooks now that I am back. By the way - would everyone like to bring their favorite Cookbook for others to preview. I know that we all have so many and I thought this might be a fun related idea. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

M- I was glad to recieve your reply! I certainly will bring the starch, although I don't know what yet. Are there any preferences on rice or potatoe? I was thinking potatoe if I can find a fun recipe.
I will go through my books today. Are we bringing the book with the recipe in it?
Mollie, I wouldn't mind meeting you someplace off the I-75 in Sarrasota to ride together. It won't seem that long for me that way. See everyone at 6:30 on the 1st!

Hi,
I would love to meet at one of the exits. I am more familiar with the Bee Ridge Exit but either is fine. I don't know what I am bringing either. I have been looking in my CL magazines for some ideas. Are we only choosing recipes from CL ? That is what I originally thought. Does anyone have any preferences as to potatoe or rice? Well, on to my Saturday chores. See everyone soon!
