I have many old ones but with now that I spend a lot of time on the www I find I have a new one...people who post in a color and different type! Is it me and my eyes that have to adjust to this and find it annoying or do others find it just as annoying?
There are certain colors that I find worse than others namely blues and greens and then there's those fat fonts. What is it with these people that they don't think their comments will stand out enough that they have to annoy others with colors and annoying fonts?
Please tell me I am not alone!!!!:(

Oooh, I'm so there with you. I can't stand people who feel the need to post in a HUGE font. Times New Roman in size 2 is good enough for the rest of us! What makes you think you're so special that you need to use size 5 for a whole post?

I agree that they can be hard to read; I just thought it was a way for someone to express herself on a fairly anonymous forum (not too big a deal). But considering how my eyes are changing now that I'm 40+, I may be headed toward being really bothered by different fonts . . . especially smaller ones! :)

Right there with you, Susan.
And I also have a new pet peeve. Would it be hijacking to post it here? If so, I'll come back and delete it, but I just have to get it out! My pet peeve is new people coming to the boards and insulting people right off the bat. I don't understand it, but it's rampant right now. It's like there was some really snarly, rude board that closed down and they all showed up here en masse in the last month or so.
Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely NOTHING against new posters, just ones who show up ready to put people down and pick fights before they've even got 20 posts under their belt. . .

I can't say that the occasional post in a different size or color bothers me at all. Some people may use a larger font because it's easier for them to read it themselves as they write it. I say this as someone who can't write in 12pt New Times Roman in Word because it's a strain for me to read it on my screen. I have to write it one way and then change the size or font before sending or printing.

Well, this poster used to post in all caps, until she was questioned on it (and I'll admit it, I asked why she did it - really, though, it was much milder than I can be). Shortly thereafter, this poster went to this new style.

I can sympathize with this! But did you realize that Word gives you the option of viewing your text larger without actually messing with the font size? In my version of Word, it's a box in the tool bar that reads "100%." If you change this to "150%," "200%" or even "500%" you'll be able to enlarge the text in your document without switching the font back and forth.

It's like there was some really snarly, rude board that closed down and they all showed up here en masse in the last month or so.
Indeed, it is just like that, isn't it? I agree. I can't imagine barging into a conversation, insulting everyone, and then blaming them when they don't welcome me to the community with open arms and a ticker tape parade.
I don't mind colors and different fonts as long as it's an occasional thing (e.g. most posts in a thread are in the "normal" style, with a burst of color here or there) but the all-caps or every-word-capitalized style is really jarring to me. As is the no-caps style.

When pasting more than one recipe in a single post I always put the titles in bold because I thought that made it easier to see that they were separate recipes, and where the new one starts. I had no idea it made it harder, but if most people find that it does, I won't do it.

Ohhhhhh, that makes sense to me.
Our newspaper has an awesome food section, but for some WEIRD reason, when they put their recipes on their Web site, and say there are four recipes following the article, they don't put the name of the recipe in bold or caps, but instead put the words INGREDIENTS and INSTRUCTIONS thus. So you have to scroll through to figure out where one ends and the next begins, nor can you quickly scan for the recipe you're interested in. I've practically begged them to change it, to no avail. They must have a reason. But then, it may be that some folks like it/find it easier to use.
Why can't everyone just do everything MY way. You know, the RIGHT way. ;)

I'm with Robyncz on the bigger pet peeve being new BBers who start hurling insults right off the bat. I don't care what color or font a poster uses; if she's happy with that, it's good by me, as long as she plays reasonably nice. I don't mean never disagreeing with other posters, but rather not raking others over the coals for their opinions.

While we're sort of on the subject, could we occasionally use a synonym for 'maven'? Suddenly it seems we have a thread a day with 'maven' in the title. For some reason, I hate that word. And I don't think I've ever heard anybody use it IRL. How about:
expert
connoisseur
master
professional
specialist
virtuoso
I think having threads titled 'Party virtuosos - please help!' or 'need advice from clothes connoisseurs' would be cool. :D

Seriously, I have to echo the sentiment about new BBers tearing apart the comments of others here. I don't like it much when anyone does it - I'm more the make-love-not-war type - but it's especially grating when someone jumps in out of nowhere and starts in. It seems that you establish a 'relationship' or rapport with people here so it's understood that we'll agree to disagree, then move on.
Maybe my brain isn't so fast right now either Sneezles - I don't know if I'm conveying this the way I want to.

Maybe because I suffer from nearsightedness so my eyes have to adjust here on the BB to posts that aren't in black. I'm not color blind so it's the actual color that bothers me. I don't seem to have a problem with emails just reading BBs.
BTA: No, I think on a BB it's an ego thing when people post in a different color. Not for emphasis in their posts because the entire post is in that color. I just find it annoying. My answer above was me trying to be nice about it...

My aging eyes have difficulty reading most web documents, including posts here, so imagine my delight when I discovered a couple of months ago that I could use CONTROL + to increase the size of the text! (Okay, I'm sure most of you already knew that, but I'm a bit slow :p ). Just hold down the control key and press the + key a time or two (or three) until the size is comfortable to read. It doesn't work on all web pages, but it sure helps here on the CLBB.

(Fake) Example:
This new recipe is awesome! I made it yesterday with DH! He was totally into cooking, and I'm totally into cooking, so we're a match made in heaven! I changed 14 things in the recipe itself, and it actually was good to eat! The dog liked it too! YUMMY!

This is me! I am always editing my emails and bb posts to get rid of excessive exclamation points! And I still end up with too many! I always remember my college professor telling me (and I think this is a quote from a famous author) that each writer only gets 1 exclamation point in their entire career!
(And yes, I skipped the exclamation point editing on this post!)

I think it happens if you have the size of your window smaller than full size. Some people like to toggle back and forth, and so they resize their individual windows to see both at once. So, what you see is what you type on, so when it's posted you see it the way they saw it when they typed it.

I think it's a New York/New Jersey thing. I grew up in NY (Long Island) and people there use it all the time. I think it might even be a Yiddish word - but not sure. I use it myself - and think it's much more appropriate than any of the other words that are synonyms because it adds a dash of humor - a hint of not taking oneself too seriously even if you do know everything about the subject in question. Or maybe that's just my take on it.

I think it happens if you have the size of your window smaller than full size. Some people like to toggle back and forth, and so they resize their individual windows to see both at once. So, what you see is what you type on, so when it's posted you see it the way they saw it when they typed it.
That explains it then and it makes sense. Thanks. I like full screen myself, so I don't think I have ever typed anything in a small window. It didn't bother me so much as I was baffled why putting in returns was easier than just wrap-around text.

That's really weird because I chose font size 7 before. Maybe we can't have 3 things against the font? 2 seems to be the limit. Hmm
Whew - I'm glad I wore my secret de-coder ring this morning.

I agree with everything above! But it could be worse! On some other boards I visit people have 50 signature lines with sparkly, glittery sayings, countdown images and other nonsense.

I'm having apostrophe issue's lately. Other people's use of apostrophe's, I mean.
I Don't Know If There Is A Program That Can Assist People With The Use of Apostrophe's, But It Would Be Nice.
OTHERWISE, HAVE A NICE FREAKIN' DAY. :p

I think you and Lynn Truss could have a pretty entertaining conversation. (If you have'nt already, you need to read Eats, Shoots and Leaves. Its' hilarious.)

My former boss (Jewish, originally from NY) told me it is a Yiddish word for being an expert in something that no one would really ever want to be an expert in. And he used it all the time at the office. We were all mavens of one sort or another.
This is a funny thread. I agree with MissKitty. Those huge, sparkly sig lines on some other boards drive me nuts.

Can we add one more pet peeve? How about people who write long posts, and don't use paragraphs. I'm not talking about the 4 or 5 liner post, but the post that's 30+ lines long of typing, typing, typing.....

This is a funny thread. I can not stand threads with tons of spelling and grammar mistakes - I don't mean typos or little errors, but posts with almost no adherence to English grammar rules. I've noticed a few more of those around the board recently (I've always loved that the posts on this board were relatively thoughtful and literate, for the most part).

You know I have another little peeve I have to throw out there. Periodically, someone will post something really serious and/or meaningful and someone else will bust in with some breezy, witty, shockingly inappropriate comment that leaves me speechless. Sort of along these (completely fictional) lines:
"My daughter has just been diagnosed with mouth cancer and I don't know what we're going to do. She's only 7 years old and she had such a bright future ahead of her."
The original poster will get a string of sympathetic and helpful responses until one yahoo breezes in with something like this:
"Well, count your blessings. Seven-year olds talk to much to begin with. I know I'd be *thrilled* if my precocious little yakkity-yak kid had to keep her mouth shut for awhile."
It's as if poster believes a "witty" tone somehow makes up for the utter jaw-droppingly inapproriateness of the post.
We've had a bunch of those lately and they make my blood boil.

Your exclamation point probably did the trick! ;)
I'm definitely guilty of using too many exclamation points, and too many smilies as well. I remember one lengthy message that I couldn't get to post because I had apparently used too many smilies! :p Dang - it was hard to figure out which ones to remove too!
I've often wondered about the caps at the beginning of each word - I've seen it on other message boards as well. Is this a language / cultural issue perhaps?
And count me as another one that is relieved that people don't fill up their sig lines with glittering fairies and tickers letting the world know how old their pet parakeet it.
Oh - and I meant to add that I strongly dislike the word "maven" as well. It's especially irritating because I work for a company that calls their representatives Mavens. I absolutely hate referring to myself that way, and usually just say I work for such-and-such company.

Come to think of it, where did the term pet peeve first originate anyways? :D
According to Wikipedia:
A pet peeve (or pet hate) is a minor annoyance that can instill extreme frustration in an individual. Typically each person has several pet peeves that aggravate her or him more than the average person. Another person may not react as negatively or at all to the same circumstance.
The term originated from the word 'peeve.' A 'peeve,' meaning something that is particularly irritating or annoying, is a relatively recent word. Its first printed usage was in 1911. The term is a back formation from a 14th-century word: 'peevish,' meaning ornery or ill-tempered.
Pet peeves are typically of common occurrences and a person may encounter their pet peeve very often. Pet peeves involve complaints about specific behaviors, rather than general complaining.[1] Pet peeves often involve specific behaviors of someone close such as a spouse or significant other.[1] These behaviors may include those of disrespect, those involving manners, personal hygiene, relationships, and family issues.[1] An example of a pet peeve involving disrespect is someone not using their turn signal while driving; while some drivers feel frustrated when another driver does not use their turn signal, other drivers do not care very much, or consider something else, such as cellphone usage while driving more annoying. Many pet peeves associated with driving can result in road rage, where the person who feels peeved seeks some sort of retribution for the action.[2] Road Rage itself is considered a pet peeve by many.[3][4]
Often a pet peeve will seem illogical to others. For example, a supervisor may have a pet peeve about people leaving the lid on the copier up and react angrily, be annoyed when others interrupt when speaking, or by messy desks of their subordinates.[5] That same supervisor may witness employees coming into work late, and not feel any annoyance whatsoever.
The "pet" part indicates, semi-ironically, an attachment to the peeve. Something you "love to hate".

*hanging head* I'm going to someplace very warm when I die, I'm convinced of this.... And I'm sure many people here agree with that assessment....
As a really close co-worker used to say...."I'll hold the door for you."
Thankful I do not know how to use color or fonts. (or more likely just forgot how to)
Also I will intentionally think of another way to say something to avoid apostrophes as I can never remember when to use them.

I've also seen it on other message boards and someone who wrote that way once responded to that very question by saying that her eyes don't work well and it's easier for her to read things in caps. So she writes out her messages in Word, then goes into "format" then "change case", then copies it into the BB. She would hit "Title case" and that would change it to all words starting with a cap. Someone pointed out she should use "Sentence case" and that helped things out.
While it does make it harder for me to read either all caps or Title Case, I can understand that some people may be able to see those easier because of the way their eyes work, so I try not to sweat it and don't make a big deal. It's not like it most of us are doing it...

Bumping this up for 2 reasons: 1) it's hilarious and 2) this will be my 100th post WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO! So . . . I'm not "new" anymore? Phew!
No difficulties with "maven" though I don't use the word, but what really grinds my gears is the use of "rave reviews" on Allrecipes.com. I had to stop looking at reviews after awhile because it was said so often. "Everyone loved it" works just fine.
