I will be in New London CT this weekend, and I figured I would see if any of you had suggestions for restaurants. I don't really care if they are cheap, expensive, inbetween.. I am just looking for yummy food.

TIA :)

eta- i will have access to car so anywhere in the general area works :)

DH just had a phone interview for a job in Groton, which is nearby. I'm very excited about the prospect of moving there! It's also close to Mystic.

The only place that I know there is the Lighthouse Inn - the lounge is very cozy and the food is good.

Maybe try chowhound (http://www.chowhound.com/search?item_type=Topic&board_id=13&query=New+London) -- I did a search for New London and found some good info.

Enjoy,

Melissa

All I've got (sorry, that's a little too far from New Haven AND not on my route to anything so I never went that way) is possibly the best Thai food I have had in the US in Guilford, at Som Siam, maybe 25 miles? down the coast. It was inconvenient to New Haven also but we always went if that tells you anything.

I meant to also tell you, though, that West Hartford has great Vietnamese, including (according my sources, I had something else) some of the best pho.

OK..........I'm home now and its warm :)

Downtown New London doesn't have a lot of good restaurants but one I really like is Brie and Blue. Its on Bank Street (the main drag). It is connected to a really nice wine store. Brie and Blue is a gourmet cheese shop with a cafe more suited for lunch than dinner. Very good food. You can go the wine shop and get a bottle of wine to have with your meal if you are so inclined. Be sure to check out the wine cellar in the wine shop. New London also has a nice Mexican restaurant called Zavala's ( its near the train stations) Thier food is more authentic than most but I think its pricey and the portions are a bit small for my apetite.

Over the bridge and into Groton there is Paul's Pasta. Homemade pasta and on the river - very nice place with great food. Its small but with local flavor.

Downtown Mystic (about a 10 minute drive from New London) I really think you should check out. Its touristy but not so bad this time of year. Mystic Pizza is there if you remember the movie with Julia Roberts. Don't eat there:p The best places to eat (both on Main Street) are Bravo Bravo and AZU. Bravo is fancy with what I consider heavyish meals but they are delish. AZU is more casual ( A Zoo). Very good food with a nosier atmosphere. My daughter is taking me there for Mother's Day lunch.:D DO NOT eat at the S&P Oyster House.

Hope this helps!

Ah, the memories!! I went to college in New London at Conn College, and I met my now husband while he was going to the Coast Guard Academy.

We had our first date at Paul's Pasta, and whenever my parents came to visit we went to the Lighthouse Inn for brunch. It has been 14 years since I was in New London-good to know the old haunts are still there!!

Dee--long ago when I was at Conn (Hi Jellyben!) 20-odd years ago, the place to go to dinner when your parents were paying was a place up in Stonington--I can't even remember the name, something vaguely nautical, the Sea-something maybe? Do you know what I'm talking about, and/or is it still there? What about the Old Saybrook Fishhouse?

Gilgamesh - you are remembering The Harborview. It burned to the ground several years ago. Great restaurant. The owners have another restuarant called Skipper's Dock that is just down the alley right on the dock. It is very good.

DEE!! YOU RULE!! :) THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE REC'S!!! we ate at both AZU and Paul's Pasta. they were both fantastic. we hit up AZU for lunch on Saturday and took our time, enjoying watching the people out on the main drag. we did Paul's Pasta on Saturday night. it was divine and my favorite place that we ate all weekend. we had outback on friday night (bleh, but it was closeby and i was starving). sunday, we ate at mohegan sun cuz i was curious to see it. we spent a bit of time at the mystic aquarium, which i really enjoyed. all in all it was a great visit. thank you so much for suggesting the restaurants. my bf and i both agreed we would have been sucked into the S&P oyster house if you had't warned us away :) he was very impressed with my "insider" info.... paul's pasta really put us both over the edge though.
thanks!!! i will be sure to ask you again if we are in your area :)
