My mother is going through her "fabric closet" and plans to weed out a lot of what she's got. She said she could feel better about it if the fabric was going to a good cause. I know I have read about organizations making quilts for the soldiers, for natural disaster victims, homeless children, etc. Does anyone know what any of these organizations are so I could put her in touch with them?

My MIL is in a nursing home and their activities director is always happy to get and kind of "crafty" stuff. I should also add that they love old greeting cards (ones you have received). They cut them up and the Alzheimers patients stitch them together to make wreaths, door decorations, etc.

I think what you are asking is how to find someone in your area that is in need of the fabric. I could give you the name of groups in my area, but fabric is expensive to mail - thus defeating your purpose.
http://www.quiltguilds.com/ This website would give you the name of quilting guilds in your area. I would call or email one of the contacts in your area - explain your situationa and they would certainly be able to put you in contact with a deserving group.
My other suggestion would be to call a local quilt store. Women that work in a quilt store would also know and put you in contact with the right person.

Check with churches in your area. Our church has a blanket ministry where volunteers make blankets of all kinds - knit, crochet, fleece, quilt and then they are donated to babies, nursing homes and women's shelters. There might be something similar near you.

If there is a senior center in your area, they might be interested as well. When my DH's great aunt moved out of her house, she had years and years worth of beads and yarn, etc and a lot of it was donated to the senior center where she was very active.

Also, Angel Doll ministries can use cloth to make the dresses for the dolls, as well as the dolls themselves., which are then given to children who are going through bad illnesses, adults who need comfort, etc.
I don't know if there's one in your area, but check with the local churches... There's always someone who'll be grateful for the donation, and do marvelous, helpful things with it! Bless you!:)
