My friend's kid is turning one, and I wanted to get them some CDs. I don't think they own a lot of kiddie music. Can recommend some singers children like? I heard Charlotte Diamond is good as are the Wiggles, but I don't know their music. My friend's baby is cute but hyper -- it would be nice to get music that kids find calming or soothing.

I wouldn't call this calm or soothing--but nor is it hyper, and it is great to sing along to:
Sandra Boynton's Rhinocerus Tap and Philadelphia Chickens (I like Chickens better):

I don't really like children's music--we listen to a lot of "adult" music--but these cds are a big favorite with everyone in the house. And if you have (or purchase--for exs the Belly Button book is a big fave here) any of the books that go with them, all the better.

I love Charlotte Diamond and would definitely enjoy getting one of her CD's.
We also have a couple of Wiggles CD's and those have some good songs too.
Disney makes some great CD's as well.

I always played music for the boys when they were going to sleep. This is one that my oldest child (almost a teenager) still listens to sometimes when trying to go to sleep. http://www.amazon.com/Dedicated-One-Love-Linda-Ronstadt/dp/B000002HM8
BTW, someone gave this to me when the kids were young. I probably, having never been a Linda Rondstadt fan, would have never bought this on my own. It's really quirky yet pretty. It has a lullaby version of This is Dedicated to the One I Love, also In My Room (the Beach Boys Song) and We Will Rock You (Yes, the Queen song, but lullaby form)

Laurie Berkner would be a good choice. My girls love her Buzz Buzz cd.

I just bought "Music With Kids" (http://home.comcast.net/~charlesrogers/cds.html) for my nephew's 1st birthday a few weeks ago. We have this CD and LOVE it - its actually one of the few children's music CD's that I listen to even when I'm alone :) It looks like they have put out another one as well.

I went out and ordered the CD! The quirkiness won me over (it would appeal to the parents).
Thanks for all the input, everyone!
I don't know if you're in need of anymore suggestions, but just thought I'd chime in, in case anyone else is interested...
Dan Zanes' "Night Time" (http://www.amazon.com/Night-Time-Dan-Zanes/dp/B00006JYBG/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6/002-7496895-8921608?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1179091505&sr=8-6) CD is a great mix of fun ("Rattlin' Bog") and mellow ("Night Owl" and "Linger for Awhile" among others) music. He has several other CDs as well, but this is the only one of his we own - we've had it ever since DS was born (he's 2 1/2 now).
Also I really recommend Elizabeth Mitchell (http://youaremyflower.org/home.html). Her voice is beautiful and she does some really great covers of classic songs. We have her "You are My Flower" album, and my son *loves* "Little Sack of Sugar". It's a fun, sweet cover of a Woodie Guthrie tune.
We have the Linda Rondstadt CD as well (gift from a friend), and I listened to it a lot before DS was born and when he was a newborn. There are some really pretty lullabies on there.

We love all of the Ralph's World CDs.... they don't grate on my adult ears and the songs usually have a little adult humor thrown in.
I love the one that says "M-O-M-M-Y needs C-O-F-F-E-E"

I don't have suggestions for calming CDs unfortunately, but I'll heartily second the recommendation for Philadelphia Chickens - my kids (6 & 7) still LOVE that CD - we just laugh, and laugh, and laugh at some of the songs.
We also love Joe McDermott (http://www.joemcdermottmusic.com/), but I must say that he's even better in person at his live shows. He's a total crack up, and the kids adore watching him and listening to his music.
Our other very favorite CD is Songs for Wiggleworms (http://www.amazon.com/Songs-Wiggleworms-Various-Artists/dp/B00004YLUE/ref=sr_1_2/103-4078659-3255014?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1179102758&sr=8-2) - with classic kids' tunes sung by folk artists. It is more soothing than most, and appeals to kids and adults alike. I've actually listened to it in the car when the kids weren't with me - on more than one occasion. :o

For bedtime music, I adore "Bedtime with the Beatles" and my grandson loved it too. In fact, I liked it so much I bought a copy for myself. So sweet and soothing.

I'll second Ralph's Word!! His music is very fun and fresh and our kids love it. I wouldn't say it's "soothing" though (but I also don't know many 1 year olds that aren't hyper).

When my kids were little, they (and we) loved Tom Chapin's music. It's similar to Ralph's World in many ways, and a one-year-old would continue to enjoy his songs as they get a little older as well.

I just ran across one on Napster as I was looking for something else. It's "Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of the Eagles." It's instrumental and very calming. Here's a link to it at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Rockabye-Baby-Lullaby-Renditions-Eagles/dp/B000KP62ZC/ref=sr_1_1/002-6597800-4377603?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1179162386&sr=1-1 (sorry, I can't figure out how to use a short title for links).
When I looked at it on Amazon, I saw that there are several of these, such as Beatles, Pink Floyd, U2, etc. Wish I had known about them when DD was a baby.

Thanks for the link Rhianna. The Eagles would probably be good as lullabies. Some of those titles made me laugh, though -- Lullaby Renditions of Nirvana, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins.

I love all his Cd's!!! OMG DD loves his KC and the Sunshine band remake of Shake your booty, what a riot when then song comes on!
I also love how he is a father himself and thinks that if parents have to listen to children's music all the time, that it should be fun and humerous for them as well.
I bought some pretty good ones a while ago that we still listen to, she has taken a liking to Gwen Stefani and Black Eyed peas now:o
1. Fisher Price Dance baby Dance!

4. Anything from the Wiggles
