Yesterday, we had a huge storm come through, and my neighbor had his video camera out. He got a brief shot of a ball of lightning in my front yard, with 2 kids about 10 feet away from it. It's a wonder it didn't get my big a$$-tree!!
Check it out! (http://www.wfaa.com/video/wfaageneral-index.html?nvid=143996)

That is absolutely terrifying with those kids there. I am so glad they didn't get hurt.

I'm sorry, but it absolutely terrifies me that people would let their kids run around outside during a thunderstorm. This story would be completely different if that bolt had struck those poor kids
A link to more information about lightning safety than everyone should ever need. (http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/)
I doubt anyone was just letting their kids run around in the rain. Those two look like they are in a hurry to get out of it.
It is surprising the lightening didn't hit the tree or hurt the kids. You sometimes here about people whoo are a fair distance from a lightening strike who still get a zap. I'm also surprised that the flash is so small - if that's the right word. We've had strikes near us where the whole sky goes bright white, but maybe it was how the camera recorded it.

UPDATE:
The lightning actually DID hit the tree, but just on some of the outer leaves. The DH was talking to our neighbor just now, and he brought some crispy leaves to us as souveniers. He had been just about to snap a "before" picture of his tree and truck for the insurance in case the storm damaged them when he saw the little girls running down the street. No, he's not a perv (I don't think), but he was going to shoot a video of kids playing in the rain. Then *poof*!

OMG! Not the kind of fame I would want. That was so close to the people running! WOW WEE I'm not a thunder storm and lightening fan. You would never catch me with a camera vidoe taping a storm, it's hard to see anything from the basement....hehehe :) Debbie

LOL! I came by to say it made the Austin news but that pales in comparison to the nat'l broadcasts!;)

My goodness! So glad the yard looked OK! The neighbor who took the video, Rod (3 guesses as to his new nickname :D ), said that WFAA paid him $400 for it. Hey, it was my house...where's my cut??? :p Wonder if CNN paid him, too, or if stuff like that becomes public and available to anyone?

The video is also on CNN's home page !! Right now it's under "Latest News" but I bet if the BBers view it would be under "Most Popular" :D

WOW! I saw it on Fox News this AM. You have more than your 15 min.
I think it becomes public after it's run. After the package got to NBC news from the killer in WV the other stations were running clips of it.

I caught it on one of those Entertainment Tonight type shows last night (sorry I don't know which one it was) while I was flicking through channels. It looked like your neighbor was being interviewed about what happened.

Saw it tonight on Inside Edition weekend - interviewing balding neighbot and 2 kids who 'claim' to be the two kids - but so do others - what a controversy!

I know...Rod says that 2 kids were paid, but it was the wrong 2. I'm not sure what's become of that aspect of the story.
