Hi there,

We just found out we're moving to Vermont. That means we need to sell this house and buy a new one. We don't really have a lot of extra money to pay two mortgages. How do people deal with the potential gap. I'm having nightmares about my husband having to stay in some cheap motel while we're stuck back here with family because we can't find a place to live.

Any advice would be appreciated,

Pam

Is the new job offering any type of relocation package?

There are temporary stay type hotels with kitchenettes that may be helpful. Many people's company's pay for a corporate furnished apartment while waiting for the old place to sell. And, keep in mind, a mortgage may be cheaper than even the cheap hotel type of place depending on the type of house you buy. Has your DH already accepted the position without negotiating a relo package or could he still negotiate something in?

When my DH was transferred from Texas to Georgia his company paid for the movers and 30 days rent. I've always preferred to rent for awhile until we got to know the area better. I wanted to learn about school districts, crime, location to services, etc.

Fortunately, our home sold quickly. The market was good and in a desired area. My DH was in Georgia alone for about 30 days (until we closed on our home). We've stayed in some temporary stay places and they were very nice. What is the housing market in your area?

I agree with Robyn regarding your DH asking about a relo package.

I think I have done it all when it comes to temporary housing.

I have lived in Residence Inn type places where I actually had a little kitchen and a bedroom, 'suite' type hotels, regular hotel rooms, fully furnished temporary rentals, stayed with friends/relatives, and housesat.

Generally, companies will give you 30 - 60 days temporary housing where they foot 100% of the bill.

If your DH works for a company I would assume they would cover temp. housing and/or a bridge loan for buying a new house.

If you don't have those type of benefits, you could look into buying a trailer for DH to live in until you get your house sold. Then you could sell the trailer when you are done.

My family and I are actually in that exact type of position now. We are waiting for our house in NJ to sell so we can begin building our house in NC. Dad got a job that he had to come down to right away. Fortunately, my parents have a trailer and an RV, so we are staying at a campground as opposed to renting a house. Mom is terribly worried about the house in NJ selling, but at least we have somewhere to stay in the meantime.
