View Full Version : Please think of my cat today...

My seventeen-year-old cat, Zoscha, hasn't been doing too well the last little while. She lost a lot of weight, and just got that sad scruffy look old long-haired cats do.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, she got REALLY ill; she lost bowel control all over the apartment, and didn't eat or really move for a day and a half. I thought she was a goner, but she recovered, almost came back to her old self. I did take her to the vet, though, and he said her white blood cell count was hugely elevated, and since she didn't have a fever, he was concerned about the possibility of a bone marrow tumour. He put her on antibiotics anyway, in case she had some kind of freak infection after all.

She was okay for a while after that -- looking frailer than ever, and a bit less energy than before.

But this morning, I don't know what's happened. Maybe she jumped up on something, and hurt her hips (she has arthritis) or maybe she DOES have a bone tumour, and it's come to fruition, as it were. She can barely walk at all, she's dragging her back legs and staggering about, and squeaking in pain when she does.

Poor baby cat. She's lying right now on the floor, on her side in the most pathetic way. We have an emergency vet appointment in a bit less than an hour. :(

I just have a feeling it's not going to be good. I'm so sad.

Well, the vet thinks that either she has had a stroke, or else she does have a tumour, probably in the spine, and that it is now impinging on her spinal cord. She seems to have neurological damage. She cannot walk at all unsupported, she reels along the walls. It's the saddest thing in the world. And she cries out in pain when she moves.

We decided it is for the best to help her to her next catlife.

I would've done it right then, I don't like waiting for it, but I made an appointment for two tomorrow. A. told me two nights ago he was coming this weekend, to finish off things around the house, and if he wants, I thought it best to leave him a chance to be there and say goodbye. I couldn't reach him by phone, he is in the field on a training course.

She is sleeping on the floor right now, all sprawled and pathetic.

And I have to go and do a show tonight, and be funny.

Oh Katharine, I am SO SO sorry. I know you already know this...You are doing the most selfless and loving thing you can do for Zoscha. She will thank you and wait for you at the rainbow bridge. I know how hard it is though, oh do I (I know you posted in my thread about Sam). If you want to talk, I'm just a PM away.

(((hugs))) I'll be thinking of you tomorrow and I just told Sam that a gorgeous feline lady friend will be seeing him soon.

My mother recently had to put down our 19 year old cat. He had kidney failure, as well as thyroid issues and all kinds of ailments. When they get that old, it's so hard to remember life without them. My 21 year old brother doesn't remember a time without that cat.

Thinking of you and your impending loss.... it is so hard to do but it's harder to see them in pain, I think.

I am so, so sorry. I know it is so very hard and she is all you will be thinking about tonight. My thoughts and prayers will be with you tomorrow. Even when we know it is the right thing to do it does not make it any easier.
We had to put down our 13 1/2yr old dog in January and it had to be one of the hardest things I have ever done.

We love our fur babies sooooooooo much!!! I wish yours the best.
Please post back when you know something as we will no doubt all be worrying and wondering.
May you have the strength to do the harder things if they need to be.

{{{{{{{{Katharine and Zoscha}}}}}}}} Kitty will be able to rest...try and be happy for her. It's the kindest thing you can do. I understand what you're going through also, since we had to help DH's 21-yr-old Siamese, Sheba.
