View Full Version : Help me find shoes for this dress!

I picked up this dress for an upcoming family event, but first off, I am not sure I am keeping it. The size I bought is too small through the bust (and probably is not going to fit perfectly in three weeks) but fits perfectly everywhere else, but the next size up is way too big. I have the bigger size on hold and am going to pick it up tomorrow and take it to my tailor to see if she can make it fit perfectly. If she doesn't think she can, I will return it and look for something else because it was just too expensive to not have it fit perfectly. But I have high hopes that she can do wonders, because I love love love the dress and really want to keep it.
Okay, so assuming I decide to keep it, I am sure I have no suitable shoes to wear with it. This dress is not my typical style, but it makes me feel very sexy when I wear it. So I am looking for some sexy strappy shoes that will help me pull this off. Any ideas?? I'm not even sure what color to go with. :o

LOL, I just went back and reread my first post - can you tell I really want this dress to FIT PERFECTLY? :o :p
Thanks, Laura! I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it hanging on the rack, but it is sooooooo far from anything I would normally wear. Loved it even more when I tried it on, so I am way disappointed that it doesn't fit right but can't bring myself to look for anything else because I love it so much! I hope my tailor can work some miracles.

*snort* Focused, you are. :p I LOVE that dress and can totally see you in it!
I'm certainly no expert, but I'm thinking the aqua and olive colors might be difficult to match. Strappy blue, perhaps?

Ooh. Found these at 9 West. But as I said, color matching might be an issue.......and perhaps the heels are a bit too high for you.......

LOVE the dress!! I would go with a sexy white sandal because you will be able to wear white with many other things. A green or aqua shoe you probably won't get many other uses for.
PS: I am so jealous of anyone who can wear a dress like that. I have no boobs so dresses like like that look ridiculous on me.

ditto on the boob problem over here :)
also - i think the shoe color is good point which is why i was drawn to the navy sandals i originally posted.

I agree that the olive and aqua colors are going to be difficult to match. I think the easiest colors to match are going to be the royal blue and white, just wasn't sure how white shoes would look.
The brighter blue color is actually a royal blue, so I don't think navy will work. Plus, I think navy is too conservative. I want flashy for this dress! :D
I love the style of the green Nine West sandals that Sandy posted. Don't think the color is quite right, though.
What do you think about something metallic? Like silver or gold?
I am so not a shoe person. :o

While I love all the strappy stuff that people have posted, I do have big wide clunky looking feet that look way better in running shoes than delicate strappy stuff. I am worried that trying to squeeze my feet into some of these styles is going to be like trying to squeeze an elephant into a china cabinet. :o

Given that I don't own any shoes with a heel taller than about an inch, I think I would break my neck in those.

In being forced to buy silver strappy shoes for a bride's maids dress, I have to say I've never worn them again as they don't go with anything. And I even picked those shoes out myself.
I'd go with strappy white as you can wear those all summer long - with jeans if you're feeling like being casual yet saucy, with skirts and other dresses.
Oooh, these also have blue in them

or I also like and they're more affordable.

It must be a coastal thing...over here on the East coast the sexy, strappy, metallic sandals are seen all the time. I have a pair of metallic silver strappy shoes and have worn them with lots of things. Pink dress, black dress, white pants, etc. Emily, I'm confused why you don't think they go with anything....

Pedi appointment already made. :p
Yeah, I figured the white ones were too "cute" and plain. Shows you how my normal tastes run - to the boring and simple. :o
I do LOVE the bronze ones Sandy posted, although I'm not sure about the color - wish they were silver. I also love the second ones that Emily posted. I'll look for them at the Naturalizer store to see if can try them on.
Thanks everyone! And get back to work, Em. ;)

Sorry Eva, those white ones are too casual I think. This may be the one time I agree with the white idea though. Here's some options from Nordstrom.

Robyn,
I love the first ones you posted. And the price is right! I would love not to spend as much on shoes as I spent on the dress. That way, maybe I can pick up a new little purse or some jewelry to round out the outfit.

Another thought...........
You mentioned the smaller size fitting perfectly everywhere but the bust so your thought was to buy the larger size and have the tailor adjust it. Couldn't the tailor adjust the smaller size in the bust area just as well?
Love the dress. Very sassy! As for shoes, I say strappy, strappy, strappy. As for white, eh, not so much. I'm really not a white shoe person at all. I vote for the metallic or one of the other funky shoe colors people have suggested. But then, I'm no fashion expert. Let's see...which uniform am I in today? The black jeans or the blue jeans? :D
You're gonna look great!

Yeah, I've really learned to love BP shoes at Nordstrom. They're not outrageously expensive and usually pretty cute. I thought those would work since the heel is really high and it's a little wider so easier to walk in. I'm not usually a white fan but with that dress I think I like it. Personally, if I found a green or aqua that matched I would do that but then I already have apple green wedges from BP at Nordstrom that I wear regularly with jeans and brown or black shirts. Shoes are an easy way to make (or break) an outfit.

Eva, have you checked out the build-your-own shoe (http://www.stevemadden.com/customization.asp) option at Steve Madden? There's a bright blue that would look great. Definitely need a heel to pull off the bold pattern. If it were me, I'd be looking for something in patent. Silver would look great too. Check out www.endless.com for some great shoes-- I love their search function so much more than any other shoe site.

Ok, I'm late to the party here, but I'm going to vote for a metallic silver. Not one that's overly metallic, but maybe a matte silver?
Oh, and strappy. Definitely strappy.

Oh, I like the aqua, but then, I already said if I could find the right color I'd go with the color. I prefer the second ones you posted because I think the white trim on the others will limit your ability to wear them with other things.

Nope...gotta dissent & vote for the 1st pair of aqua shoes (the ones w/out the heel strap) :-)
While silver would look great, I'd personally never wear them again.
It's a fab dress. Despite what a few people said above, I think it would look best on a less-busty figure. So, don't rule yourselves out on this, ladies!
Aggie -- you haven't said what the family event is. Wedding? Reunion? Just curious? Also, you do realize that you're raising the bar pretty high for DH to look incredible, you know!

I'm another vote for the silver...silver and blue rocks plus you'll wear them with jeans and stuff. I wore my copper sandals into the ground I loved them so much and haven't found a proper replacement. At the time I bought them I didn't think I would get much use, but I found plenty of stuff to wear them with!

I just barely saw them, Lisa! I actually do like them but not as much as the first silver ones from Piper Lime, which are really cute. I also really like the first aqua ones I posted. Maybe I should take an inventory of my closet and see whether I think I will wear the silver with anything else. I'm leaning towards silver just because I have this ingrained aversion to white shoes and because I am too lazy to hassle with trying to color match blue or aqua (although I do really like the first aqua shoes, which also come in white but not silver).
Susan, DH's oldest brother is retiring from the Air Force later this month. All of his family (parents + 5 kids (and their spouses and kids)) will be there for the event, and it's the first time in 17 years that that's happened (the last time was his older sister's wedding in 1990). So DH & I are hosting a dinner party and having a professional photographer come out to shoot some family pictures. It'll be a mini-immediate-family reunion of sorts.
And FTR, I am a B-cup, so by no means well-endowed, and the dress looks great. :)

So I exchanged the dress for the next size up and tried it on again at the store. I hadn't noticed that the straps were adjustable and were all the way out, so that's why the top was fitting all big and saggy and unflattering-like. Adjusted the straps up, and the top half fit great. So the only alterations that were needed were for the side seams to be taken in from the bust down to the hem, easily done in-house. So there you go - I have a new dress!! :D
And after getting the dress off to alterations, I checked out shoes and ended up buying these, in metallic silver:
http://www.zappos.com/images/732/7322294/827-427378-p.jpg
They were hot! I liked the idea of aqua/turquoise shoes but knew I would never wear them again with anything. At least with these, I have a chance, especially if I pick up some hot new jeans when I hit my goal weight. So much for saving money on the shoes, though.
