View Full Version : How is your computer housed?

Our guest room is also our office. The way it's set up now, it's crowded and not very functional.
We currently have a cheap Sauder armoire, but would like to switch to something a lot less bulky. I'm not ruling out another armoire, but it would have to be well-built and much less bulky than this one. When it's open, it really ends up taking up as much if not more room than a regular desk.........
On the one hand I don't want to pay a lot for a desk, on the other hand I don't want to get stuck with a big, old ugly desk either.
Any ideas on what we can do for our computer? Maybe there's something unconventional that I haven't thought of? Any great resources for computer desks?
I'm searching online, of course, but I'd love to hear any ideas you all might have.

So does the armoire serve as guest use also..drawers for clothes and such?
If not then Pottery Barn sells a desk top that you can put file cabinets under. This is what DH has behind his desk for his computer.

No, it's just a computer desk and nothing more.
Too funny - I took the part out of my post about me coveting the Pottery Barn desk with the filing cabinets. :D That desk is definitely in the running. I'd love to have two filing cabinets underneath and get rid of our current filing cabinet, but then we wouldn't have the CPU storage.
Not sure how much we'll be able to spend on the desk - I'd like to go as inexpensive as possible, but on the other hand, I'm sick of cheap and ugly. ;)

I'm in love with this desk system (http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/collection.do?method=get&id=378222&cat=40) from Room and Board. First you pick how large you want it and then you can totally customize it - unit by unit. But $1600 just for the smallish 4-unit desk is a little too pricey.
We have a bar table and set of chairs from R & B and love it.

DH has his CPU under the desk and there's plenty of room. If you didn't want to go the Pottery Barn route you could use an old door or a thick plank with a sheet of glass or plexiglass on top.
The Room & Board is a bit too modern for me but I also can't see where you'd actually sit at it like a desk. I see where it says they have drop-down work surfaces but it certainly doesn't seem deep enough to sit comfortably at, JMHO.

You're right. I realized as I played around with it that I was in love with customizing it - not the actual design (I like the modern look, just not the layout). Not only did you have a lot of choices, but their program allowed you to build it and see it. Very cool!
I realized that as you're sitting at the desk, if you need to get in a drawer or a cabinet, you'd have to move your chair to get to it. Not at all practical and something that would become very tiresome.
I may just ask for PB gift certificates and wait until I have enough or feel comfortable covering the rest. It really has most of what I want.
I like the CPU tower up off the floor for some reason.........
