All right, I really thought that tonight's evaluation/elimination was like one big therapy session. I have never seen so much crying in my life.
I agree with their choice of who they let go, though.
I'm really hoping Paul or Adrian pulls it through to the end.
JAG scares me.

I agree with FN choice too and felt like the crying took away from the professionalism the contestants are to demonstrate.
It is understandable that there would be tears, but this was a little excessive.

If you really want to know, highlight here...Michael Salmon, like the fish!

LOL!!! Thank you!
Jag really lost it last night. I wonder if maybe that oven didn't work on purpose just to see the reactions under extreme stress? If I hear Amy say one more time that she is a gourmet cook, I am going to SCREAM!:D

Last week I said I didn't like Paul, but I'm actually starting to like him. I might even hope he wins. Either Paul or Adrien. I can't wait to see next week...it looks like a good one!

I thought the same thing. Even AI contestants don't cry that much when they're critiqued.
Amy should go next, IMO. I used to like JAG and his "culinary point of view" but his temper was too much, especially since he had to know the cameras were on.
The next episode looks like a train wreck. I'm not sure I want to watch, except to see Alton.

Is anyone else just sort of disappointed in this show? It seems to have been better in the past years. I really wish Food Network would have some new shows, but I'd really like to see some by professionals, rather than amateurs. I mean, really, would you watch any of these candidates to learn anything about cooking? I think most of us on this board have equal (or more!) knowledge base than the group of "next food network stars". I guess I'll keep watching, but I'm just disappointed that we can't be offered better shows.

I seen most of it but not all of it. I don't see why they let go who they let go though. If I can catch it on Thursday again I will watch it again but doubt I will have the time. I thought there was a lot of crying too. I will be surprised if Amy is still there after next week. Paul did make a big turn around, I wonder if he can keep it up? I don't like how they are doing the recipes this year. In past years they gave you all of them, this year it is just a couple of them each week.

I agree...the pickins seem kind of slim.

Adrian really looks like Rick Bayless to me (without the gerbil stuck to his bottom lip) and Amy looks like Tina Fey (without the sense of humor).
I don't know which is worse, JAG's reaction to the oven not being on or Adrian thinking that is actually was on. I was thinking that they'd slice up the meatloaves and saute up the slices or something. I couldn't believe it when JAG put those meatloaves in the deep fryer! It worked out for him though.

It's almost like the whole purpose of this show is for entertainment, not to actually generate a new program. Look what happened to Guy Fieri, last year's winner.
Most of the challenges are unrealistic and not what an actual "star" would have to do. (30 minutes for grocery shopping?)

this week disappointed me too. the room full of crying was a bit much. i think JAG must've had some sort of military trauma, and that explains his temper and why he broke down when he was thrown back into a situation like that. as for everyone else...i don't know. nobody really has a WOW personality to me. it's the polar opposite of top chef where everyone is into competing and seems to actually have a lot of culinary skills.
i hope next week is better!

Oh, totally! I had a big problem with the last challenge when they cooked for the Nets game. 45 minutes to shop from the spot they were standing in the studio? In New York? Where they had to drive TO the grocery store? And shop at a store they may not even be familiar with?
I can barely make it to the grocery store and home in 45 minutes, unless I'm just picking up a few items, and I live pretty close to one!

LOL! This is weird, but I really think that Paul looks like one of the executives who is a judge, Bob Tuschman.
Maybe these pics don't do the comparison justice, but last night during the judging I kept thinking how much they looked like each other :D

You could be correct about that, though maybe not the kind of traumatic situation I think you meant. This link (http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/2007/06/military_garcia_foodnetwork_070612/) was on another message board.

I read the article about Jag a while ago and found his interview comments in this episode exceptionally pathetic. IMHO, he eluded to combat situations when describing his reactions during the quick challenge…not hazing. I do realize hazing can be very brutal.
I do have to say, if the same thing happened to me with the oven I would have swearing up a story, no matter if there were cameras in my face!!

This is my first season watching the show. Have any of the previous winners been given their own show yet?
I think Adrien has potential to carry a show. Not sure about the rest.

The first season was won by Dan & Steve. They were a duo and they have a show called Party Line with Dan and Steve. They were all about entertaining.
The second winner is someone that actually guest hosted one episode of this season's Next Food Network Star, Guy Fieri. His show is Guy's Big Bite. He was always about big flavors. He has a new show coming out as well called Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

Anthony Bourdain is doing commentary on this show which is quite entertaining in terms of a perspective on the Food Network and what they are looking for.
Clearly this show is all about being highly rated summer fodder and not about finding a host.

This is definately not in the same degree as Top Chef. It is not just chef's competing but a very mixed bag of contestants. Let's wait and see cuz it's not over yet and it remains very entertaining. My vote is for Adrian, however it is still anyone's game.

....
Clearly this show is all about being highly rated summer fodder and not about finding a host.
It never occured to me that it was otherwise: a light reality show about contestants being kicked off one type of an island or another. The "big" prize is six 30-minute programs during the summer months, as I recall -- half a cycle. I was really surprised when Dan and Steve were renewed. I like them, and think they're fairly charming, but I feel like I'm watching the same show every week.
It's almost like the whole purpose of this show is for entertainment, not to actually generate a new program. Look what happened to Guy Fieri, last year's winner.
I dunno - I think Guy's actually been good for them: he got his second program (rather than extension of his one show) and has hosted at least one special. I never liked him myself, but he was my bet for Season 2.
I really thought they'd send Adrian packing: He doesn't have the chops. Have we seen any evidence he can cook? I myself don't care for the doe-eyed baby brother look, but even if I did, I don't think I'd see him as having any kind of TV presence. Besides the stupid comment about Vietnam, Michael should have stayed.
And what was all the nonsense about no distinction between personal life and public life on FTV? OK, so Bobby Flay trots out his knock-out wife, Paula parades her bear of a husband, Rachael cameos her greasy husband -- what two or three times a year? Besides that, are we really supposed to believe these people are living out loud?? Did anyone else find that odd?
And, finally, if getting a show on FTV is all about a "culinary point of view" and letting "your own warm personality shine through" -- who's going to explain away Robin Miller??? I wouldn't be surprised to learn she had a dozen or so bodies buried in her back yard.
