List Your Top.......Movies
I just watched a few of my favorites movies this weekend and thought it would be fun to hear you opinions. So here's the questions:
1. Name five that you consider to be great movies? These would be groundbreaking, award winning, surprising, or just unique, in your opinion. The one that after watching the first time, you just sat back and said "wow".
1. Saving Private Ryan
2. Pulp Fiction
3. The Sixth Sense
4. Fight Club
5. Schindler's List
2. Which movies do you just enjoy. These would be the ones that you could watch over and over again. They may not be award wining, but for some reason, you just have a fondness for them.
1. Raising Arizona
2. Sixteen Candles
3. Breakfast Club
4. Less Than Zero
5. Steel Magnolias
6. Coal Miners Daughter (Don't ask me why, I don't even like country music, but I can't ever pass this one up if it's on T.V.):o
7. Papillion
8. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
9. It's a Wonderful Life
10. Forrest Gump
11. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
12. Vertigo
13. Little Big Man
14. Smokey & The Bandit:o
15. Primal Fear
3. What are some movies that everybody loved, but you just don't.
1. American Beauty
2. Pay it Foward (Truly hated this one)
3. The Matrix (or anything with Keanu Reeves for that matter)
I'm sure there are lots more.:D

Elf (oh wait --- ELF is the most boring moving I ever suffered through because I was in a theater and it was freezing. At least I was at home watching The Queen)I have to agree about Elf, but DH and I watched The Queen this weekend and really liked it. I thought it was a fascinating character study of Tony Blair and the royal family.
Two more movies that I'd add to my "What's the big deal list" - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (weird/boring) and Casino Royale (just hated it - the plot was ridiculous).

Favorite movies include: The Philadelphia Story and The Big Chill. Also, The Princess Bride.
I did not like Raising Arizona -- maybe because I'd just had a baby, and was horrified at the thought of a baby being kidnapped.
Worst movie I can think of is The Incredible Hulk. DH rented it; DD and I wanted those 2 hours of our lives back.
I'm sure I'll think of others . . .

oooh, I love The Princess Bride every chance I get to say "as you wish".....unfortunately, it doesn't come up too often in day to day life. In the same vein, I also loved Willow.

Movies that I could watch over and over (and have):
Rocky 4 - my son would watch this before his JV basketball games "to get up for the game" and my favorite part is watching Rocky work out in Russia! Strange, I know, but you had to be there (at our house, I mean).
Dodgeball - same as above - it's just too funny and stupid and Ben Stiller makes me laugh....Such memorable lines as "nobody makes me bleed my own blood" and "Donde esta la bibloteca Pedro?"
Now for my favorites: (that I can think of)
Overboard
9 - to - 5
Lion King
The Way We Were
Cold Mountain (but I liked the book better)
Godfather II
Private Benjamin
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Dirty Dancing
There are lots more that I liked and enjoyed at the time but have totally forgotten since then....
An opinion: We recently watched Apocolypto and I really thought I would hate it, but the story was fascinating and compelling. I still find myself thinking about it.

Wow-
Lord of the Rings (all of them)
Memento
Schindler's List
Polar Express (okay, I'll admit that it's mostly the technology involved here and the fact that my company's system is used but it still fascinates me)
Kill Bill 1 and 2
Can watch over and over-
Overboard (he, I haven't seen it in years!)
The Hunt for Red October (I don't know what it is but this is the best movie!)
Dirty Dancing
The Breakfast Club
Evita
Napoleon Dynamite
What's the hype?
Dumb and Dumber
The Matrix
Batman

I did not like Raising Arizona -- maybe because I'd just had a baby, and was horrified at the thought of a baby being kidnapped.
Barbara, a friend of mine raved about this movie. DH and I watched it and when it was over we looked at each other and said, "that's the dumbest movie I've ever seen." We happened to catch it about a year later, and laughed our heads off. I don't know why it was funny the second time, but I think it's hysterical now.

Splendor in the Grass
West Side Story
I absolutely agree with you re West Side Story --- great movie. In fact, I have this fantasy that J-Lo and Marc Anthony will buy the rights and do a remake. It's a timeless story, and a fabulous soundtrack. Can't you just see J-Lo as Maria, and Marc Anthony as Bernardo?

Wow
Shawshank Redemption
I can't believe I forgot this one. Another one I could watch over and over and over.
Another favorite is The Green Mile. I remember waiting for each installment when Stehpen King was writing the series. Probably one of the only book-to-movie movies that I wasn't disappointed in.

WOW Movies:
Titanic- I cried for several hours afterward. It put a face to the people who went through that horrible tragedy. I can't even begin to imagine being in that predicament.
Saving Private Ryan
Movies I could watch over and over:
Arsenic and Old Lace
Casablanca
The Philadelphia Story- Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart version only please ;)
Dirty Dancing
Top Gun
Gone With The Wind
Movies I just don't get:
Any of the Star Wars films
That's all I can think of at the moment...
Ooh, I loved Blow Out. I remember when it came out, I insisted my parents watch it on cable. I sat there unbearably uncomfortable as my high school boyfriend, my parents and I (at 17) watched the nude scenes. "Uh, so can I get anyone popcorn?"
I could watch over and over:
What About Bob?
I just recently learned to appreciate the Star Wars series. Liked the first one when it came out, but none of the others until now. My boys are discovering them and I'm finally getting it.

True Romance is really good - definitely one of my top movies. Also Dogma, The Godfather, Dr Zhivago and Star Wars.
The one movie I watch every time it is on TV 2001: A Space Odyssey.
DH loves the movie Repo Man - but I just can't get into it. We've tried to watch it a bunch of times but I always fall asleep half-way through.

There have been a few similar threads in the past and I'm sure my answers have been different every time. :D
1. Name five that you consider to be great movies? These would be groundbreaking, award winning, surprising, or just unique, in your opinion. The one that after watching the first time, you just sat back and said "wow".
Memento
American Beauty
Star Wars
Schindler's List
American History X
I'd forgotten about Primal Fear. Great film! I love it when a movie totally tricks me and I don't see it coming. :) It's rare that they don't give it away. Usual Suspects and Sixth Sense were great for that reason.
2. Which movies do you just enjoy. These would be the ones that you could watch over and over again. They may not be award wining, but for some reason, you just have a fondness for them.
Too many to name really, including Clerks, Princess Bride, Star Wars, North by Northwest, A Christmas Story, Love Actually, Airplane...
3. What are some movies that everybody loved, but you just don't.
