I would like to grow my own basil, mint and chives. Anyone have suggestions of good resources to turn to get started?

Not knowing where you are, I'd call your local county extension service for recommendations on authorities in your area: good nurseries, soil/sun comments, etc. Even Home Depot & Lowe's carry these basic herbs; usually all they need is sun & water--easy as pie (well, not as making pie crust . . . oh, never mind :D ).

From my experience with basil & mint: basil will get huge, so don't plant too many plants unless you already know what to do with it (pesto or whatever). It's very easy to grow. Mint needs to go into a pot, as it'll take over; it's a perennial (at least in my area, which is warm).

Welcome to the boards!:)

Basil grows easily from seed, and there are roughly one zillion different varieties--knock yourself out. Basil is an annual--it won't make it thru the winter. Not too late to plant some right now--it matures pretty quickly, and even the little thinnings taste good.

Chives--buy a potted plant, or find a neighbor who will divide one of hers. Chives are perennial, and will come back up next spring.

Mint--roughly half a zillion kinds, all grow about the same way. They can become invasive. Which means if you plant them in the vegetable garden or flower garden, you will soon have mint everywhere. Which is not the worst thing in the world--better than poison ivy. Plant them in a pot or bucket, or put them somewhere safe--in a little piece of soil between a sidewalk and the house or driveway. They like rich moist soil but will grow most anywhere, and don't mind a little shade. Mint is also perennial.
