I bought the 2007 BMW X3 with the performance package last Sat. (It's the chick-sized SUV.)
YAY! God she's fast.

Beautiful! (Insert drooling smiley :D )
It has a diesel engine, so I'm not sure about mileage...

We have revised the 1985-2007 MPG estimates to make them comparable to the new 2008 MPG estimates!
Fuel Type Premium
MPG (city) 16
MPG (highway) 24
MPG (combined) 19
Fuel Economics
Cost to Drive 25 Miles $4.21
Fuel to Drive 25 Miles 1.32 gal
Cost of a Fill-up $50.98
Miles on a Tank 303 miles
Tank Size 17.7 gal
Annual Fuel Cost $2525
* Based on 15000 annual miles and a fuel price of 3.20 per gallon.
Fill-up cost and the distance you can travel on a tank are calculated based on the combined MPG and the assumption that you will re-fuel when your tank is 10% full.

I can't get our stupid digital camera to work. I've gotta go get another one. But I will definitely post pics once I do.
She takes premium unleaded, says she gets 28 MPG highway and 19 city. She's got some kind of running avg. on her computer screen thingie that says she's averaging 23.8 right now. She'll also let you know how many estimated miles you have until you need gas again.
I've never had such a smart car. It was raining the other day and I turned on the wipers, but SHE decides how fast they're going to go because of some "auto-sensing" rain detector program. She started beeping and flashing the seatbelt thing at me so I was insisting to my daughter that she didn't have her seatbelt on - causing a big yelling match - when as it turned out, Einstein was just sensing the weight of my purse as a passenger in the front seat.
Her headlights automatically dip down or turn left/right to stay focused on the road and let you see what's coming around the corner, etc. They automatically clean themselves too...lol. (Does my daughter come in this model?)
Bluetooth capable, (whatever that means,) and to talk on the phone, I just plug in, turn on the radio and hit the button on the steering wheel. It broadcasts my phone call through the speakers and I just talk normally and people can hear me. 10-speaker, 2 subwoofer stereo system so I can really ROCK my crappy 80s music, LOL.
I need to go get a Jimi Hendrix bumper sticker, or the Grateful Dead catepiller smoking hookah sticker to put on there because I'm not really ready to commit to being THAT woman. My neighbor is teasing me, calling me a "Huppie" (hippy/yuppie.)
Anyway, thanks for letting me blab about my silly car. She's very smart.

p.s. Cumulus, you got the right color! Einstein is "platinum bronze" which is a fancy way of saying she's beige.
and just a touch more blabbing...(sorry)
She's an automatic AND a manual. You pull the gear thingie over toward you and go into "sports drive" for more control (<---clearly a husband feature) but you've got 6 gears and an over drive. She has hill descent control for mountain driving, which apparently keeps your speed constant using the gears rather than the brakes when going down a huge hill, and a dynamic traction system that you can turn on to have each wheel independently thinking during snow driving. All wheel X-drive all the time with tire pressure sensors and I dunno whatall else.
When you put her in reverse, her passenger side mirror automatically tilts downward so you can see the curb in case you're parallel parking. LOL. Oh, and some GPS anti-theft thing that allows BMW to locate your car and tell the police where it is, or if you lock yourself out, they can send a signal to her to unlock herself for you. She's got motion detectors inside, so I can't leave the dog in the car at all, or the alarm will go off. She's also got some kind of tilt sensor so if anyone tries to steal my wheels, (do people really do that?) she'll squawk. And the BMW equivalent of On-Star - the BMW operator will put through calls for you, automatically sense if an airbag has been deployed and call the authorities etc.
She's gotta have 1200 miles on her engine before I can really see how she performs, but for now, she's handling like a little sports car, even though she's an SUV. (I don't think she's made for off road, I think SUV means suburban assult vehicle in this case.) 20 MPH feels the same as 80 MPH in her. Her spedometer goes up to 160, but I guess there's something called a governor that will alert you once you hit 125. I never will, but I hope she tells on my husband if he does.

auto/manual shift thing is called sequential shift. My car has that and I've seen some other models that do, too.
I do have one question. You shouldn't have to plug anything in to use your bluetooth (wireless for the car to go through speakers). You should have, in theory, "Paired" your phone w/your car so that when you get in, it's already up.
Oh, I hate to rain -- pun intended -- on your parade, but whatever you do DO NOT BREAK that windshield. Those rain-sensing windshields are mucho much expensive -- over $1200 to replace.
Like the tilting side mirrors. Do you have a backup camera, too?

I guess BMW calls sequential shift "sports drive." It says SD at me and then M2 or whatever gear I'm in. And apparently it's backwards from other people's cars. To go into a higher gear, I tap it downward - which would make my neighbor's VW and my co-worker's Mazda go into a lower gear. I dunno, this is all new to me. Previously I had a Buick Rendezvous.
I don't know what bluetooth is. I plug my clunky brick non-camera, non texting cell phone into the holder jack thing and it goes over the speaker system. No auto-reverse camera, but the Mercedes and one of the new Jeeps have that. I want that. LOL. Probably because it has a commercial.
Also, anyone know anything about the Lexus that parallel parks itself? I never parallel park, but that would be pretty sweet.

Yeah, my car you tap down to shift up. Very weird, I must say.
Get rid of that clunky phone and get yourself a bluetooth phone. You don't have to plug anything in. You "pair" it w/the car and every time you get in, your phone with pair automatically.
Lexus model LS460 has the parallel park. You have to line it up in a certain way and then it does it. freaky is all I have to say about that.

Forgot to ask: Do you have navigation? I saw the nav in the Infinity SUV and I hated it. Cook features, but I hated all the clicking and turning you had to do to get what you wanted...

I was loving this SUV until you made this statement. This wouldn't work for me. I'd have to figure out if there was a way to turn it off.
In fact, if i could find a car that would automatically turn on and run the heat or a/c when it got too cold or hot for my dog, I would buy it today. Sometimes I just want to run in some place for more than a cup of coffee, but most of the time can't leave the pupster long enough.

Actually, sports drive isn't the same as the clutchless manual. BMWs have 3 "modes": standard, sports drive (where it drives it to a higher rpm before shifting), and Steptronic, which is clutchless manual. I am a manual transmission lover, and thing the Steptronic on the BMW is a bit of a letdown though. When it gets to a certain rpm, it automatically shifts for you, even if you are driving it like a manual transmission.

My salesman explained that it was designed to protect the transmission/engine from stupid people who don't know when enough RPM is enough! Because before i even tried it, I asked him if you could switch midstream from SS to Auto and he said the car would not allow you to hurt it!
Also, said car will not allow me to:
Lock doors w/engine running
Lock remote inside said car OR trunk (there are not keys anymore)
Drive w/my passenger or my's seatbelt off (very annoying beep -- not that I would anyway)
go past my 5k mark for oil change/tire rotation - dings until you go!
But it does allow me to:
roll my back windows ALL the way down. My dogs LOVE this feature!

Oh, I know *why* it does it - we have several of these cars in my family. But it's hardly a manual if it's acting like an automatic. If I was looking for a sports car, I'd go for a pure manual and not this.

absolutely! I love manual transmission - but not the clutch in houston traffic! I drove a 350Z last year and it was SO fun but I felt like I was riding on the ground (and everything that went with that)!

I don't understand this comment. You can't lock your doors with the engine running, meaning you're driving around with all the doors unlocked? Please clarify.

I was in a hurry the other day and I got out of my car and forgot to turn off the engine. I tried to lock the car doors and the car did nothing but BEEP at me until I figured out what the problem was! I felt really stupid, but the engine is just that quiet!

07-03-2007, 01:09 PM
Ah, so it's likely that the door being open with the engine running was the problem. Thanks for clarifying that.

not exactly. the doors were closed. I have an external locking mechanism on the door handle. when I closed the door and tried to lock the doors, it beeped at me. When i opened the door, it beeped at me AND told me that the door was open! very annoying when you're stupidly trying to figure out why the doors won't lock!

No navigator, is that the direction thing rental cars have the help you find whatever you're looking for?
I haven't noticed the sports drive thing shifting for me, but I don't have 1200 miles on it yet so I've been careful about not going above 4500RPMs. (That's what the sales guy said I had to do...)
Girlfriend, what the h#ll are you carrying around?
my cellphone. LOLOLOL.
Actually, my purse isn't that heavy, it's got a wallet and a couple of cosmetics in it, so I dunno. Einstein is just very touchy I guess.
I'm looking for a specific Jimi Hendrix sticker to slap on her and mark her as my own.
I'd compulsively auto-parallel park in that Lexus. LOL. Hey, didn't Princess Diana's car have some kind of anti-kidnapping FLAME THROWER on its undercarriage? I can think of a few traffic situations where I'd love to have that. Hold your lane, sir, or KERPLOW I torch your car.
