Oy. I really want to go for a long a weekend but Texas in August? We did Key West in August last year and I'm still not over it  :( Boy, was it hot. Am I going to be too miserable to have any fun? TIA.

San Antonio isn't as bad as Houston but I honestly wouldn't choose it for a summer vacation spot, especially if you didn't enjoy Key West at that time of year. Especially if the rains continue it's gonna be pretty sticky.

I agree with what she said.

I wouldn't, but I already live in Texas... San Antonio will be a bit less humid than Houston, but I would consider a better time, like October. Most of what there is to do in SA is outdoors (Fiesta Texas, SEa world, Riverwalk, Alamo, etc.) and is fabulous in October. If kids are not an option, then I would pick a time when the kids are in school.

Thanks for the replies. That's what I figured. I have the nerve to complain about the heat and humidity in Ohio  and it's no where near the stuff in FL or TX. Maybe DH will have a business trip in October too. Thanks!

Not to hijack your thread, but what about San Antonio at Christmas time? I'm thinking about going there... a lot to do??? Somebody who lives in Texas said 'yuck'... nothing to do there....

Late July to early September is generally the hottest weather, so August is a pretty sure bet that it will be hot. I've had as much humidity on San Antonio as in Houston. I might do it, because I grew up in Texas, but it wouldn't be my first choice. And I wouldn't do it if you've been miserable in other hot, humid places. You might not even have the coastal breezes I would expect in the Keys.

I used to travel to the San Antonio area a lot. August is, as others have said, insufferable if you're not a hot-weather person. I've been in December when it was biting cold and raining, and I've been around Thanksgiving when it was hot. Helpful range for you, eh? Maybe one of them was a fluke!

Another Texan weighing in....in a word "no"! August is probably the worst possible time to come visit. As the others have said, spring and fall are great, and even the winter is usually fine. San Antonio at Christmas is beautiful. They have the festival of lights (that's not the right name), but they decorate the river in thousands of lights and it is really lovely. And most of the time the weather is mild enough to walk around with just a light jacket. So my vote would be to wait.

We went through San Antonion in August once. The heat was incredible, radiating up from the sidewalks and just really too hot to do anything outdoors.

Ditto this response. August is a miserable time of year to be in SA - not only is it hot, the humidity is stifling, even in central Texas.

December is usually a very nice month, and I have been down at the Riverwalk during Christmas - the lights really are lovely. In my experience in all my years in Texas, Christmas is not that cold (I can remember being in shorts most Christmases). The coldest part of the winter (where you get bitterly cold wind, rain, and often ice/hail) is late January and February, so those would be times to avoid.

Then what is "cold" to us is a balmy spring day to someone who lives in Ohio. It did snow here on Christmas Eve in 2004...

I've been to SA in August, spent 3 nights down on the Riverwalk. Yes, it was hot but not ungodly. Shopped in the mornings, relaxed by the pool in the afternoon, hit the Riverwalk at night. Best part was the crowds were not very big!;)

Yes, the Riverwalk is nicely shaded, so it acually stays pretty comfortable. Going anywhere else where you are out in the sun is definitely hot, though...if you aren't used to it and were uncomfortable in Key West, I wouldn't recommend August.

Regarding Christmas - I agree that it is a good time to visit. It sounds like it is just you, but if there are kids involved, I think the kid attractions are closed (Sea World, Fiesta Texas), although Fiesta Texas might have some limited hours when the kids are out of school.
