I am sure this question has been answered before on one of the HP threads, but I didn't find it after a quick browse and so am hoping someone doesn't mind answering it again. What is the difference between the adult version and the children's verions of HP 7? Obviously, since the book is not yet released, no one can tell me the exact side by side difference, but how have you understood the difference? Do I need to buy both? Are you all buying both? I read them myself for pleasure but am also collecting the hardbacks for my son when he is older (he's just a baby now). ??

This is the first I've heard of an adult version, so I'll be watching this thread closely. My oldest DD will be reading the book too (there is a fierce battle over who gets it first) so I guess I'll buy the children's, but if there is another version available I would go to that for my second reading.

Really, maybe it is just over here??

Maybe it is just the cover art that is different?? Amazon doesn't clarify...
???
I haven't really been following all the HP threads, so maybe I am out of the loop on this.

This is the first I've heard of there being 2 versions too. When I reserved a copy at the bookstore (for DS), they didn't ask me which version I wanted.

So, maybe it is just the cover art. On both the French and UK Amazon sites, they make a distinction between the two editions, but do not explain the difference. If it's just the cover then I want the kid's edition, definitely. The book description is slightly different for the two, which made me think the difference was more than just the cover, but maybe not. ??

Okay, so I did some more googling and finally found the answer to my question. It is just the cover art. I guess some people are too embarrassed to be seen reading what is OBVIOUSLY a children's book, LOL, although at this point I would think everyone and his brother knows who/what Harry Potter is! ;)
I also discovered that Harry Potter, JK Rowling, and my sis all have the same birthday! :D
Here's where I found the info: http://www.raincoast.com/harrypotter/faq.html

Don't forget, I think there's also supposed to be a "special collector's" edition that leather bound with gold foiling for the writing. I think it cost like $60 or something like that.
As for me, when I get my copy, it will probably be the childrens' hardcover...that's what my other six are and I see no reason to change it now!

I know that there is an American and a UK version of each book. The first book, in the UK is called "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" instead of "Sorcerer's Stone". I know that the cover art is different.
Sneezles might pop in here, I think I remember her saying that she has the UK versions of each book. She might be able to tell us whether the content of the books are the same.

The UK version has Rowlings' original, British English words. "Philosopher's Stone," which was deemed to be too esoteric a phrase for US audiences. "Jumper" for "sweater". That kind of thing.

Popping in late, but you're right, Honeygirl, it's just different cover art. I guess adults were "embarrassed" to be seen reading a children's book on the tube so they came up with an adult style cover. Whatever. ;) It's just in the UK, not the US.
FWIW, you can view all the different countries covers here:
