If $1000 dropped in your lap, what would you splurge on? All necessities around the house are taken care of, and the kids want you to spend the money on yourself.
What would you do?

Hmmm, in real life right now it would be a new sofa. I have a loveseat that's adequate but I can't stretch out on it. But, you said all household stuff is taken care of? I guess I'd get new ski boots (I partially melted mine last year. ) and a road bike. Probably some new cycling clothes as well.

A DLR camera. :)

Honestly, I'd love to have a nice collection of jackets of varying weights. It's pretty much always "jacket season" where I live, so subtle gradations of weight, warmth, and "cuteness" would be most welcome. :)

A new smaller laptop with DVD recording capability and a big fat hard drive. I probably will anyway, my little splurge out of the house money -- which isn't really splurge money, it will be survival money hopefully sooner rather than later....

Travel. I'd go someplace fun.

Forgot to add mine.
I'd get a new, expensive leather handbag/satchel. Not in functional brown or black. I've seen some in the boutique stores near me, and I've never bought them. I usually make do with something more practical.

Oh boy, don't I wish;) . I would put it towards rental of a houseboat in the keys and fish, fish, fish, drink margaritas and fish some more. Of course I would take DH:D

It's funny...that's exactly the position I was in a couple of months ago--and the exact amount of money I had to spend. My mother gave me the money out of my uncle's estate when he passed away in May. DH and I talked about several things, including purchasing another Mark Hopkins sculpture. (We purchased this one in January on our trip to Vegas and fell in love with his work): http://www.mountaintraditions.com/images/Product/large/3540.jpg

In the end, I decided to go shopping for carrots...um, I mean...karats. Since I can't take a picture of two earrings at once, here's one:

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid225/p2a6346c526e1baaae58d798093bf878c/e8a644c3.jpg

Since this was, in essence, an inheritance, we wanted to spend the money on something with permanent value that could be passed on to our daughters. Since we were going to SoCal anyway, we decided to go to the diamond district in LA. I am VERY happy with my purchase, as these are the first pair of really nice earrings I own. I'm all set now. I have a nice necklace, a nice strand of pearls, a nice bracelet, and nice earrings. I'm done. Unless someone else leaves me some more money. After all, I probably should leave a pair of earrings for each of my daughters, shouldn't I? :D

I'd save it and use it for school expenses, or living expenses once I'm in school full time.

Thank you! Yes, it sold two days after we put it on the market, for a token thousand dollars less than we were asking. ("The roof needs doing." "Yes it does, very badly. I'd do it this summer if I were you. Nice offer. We'll take it.")

I'd probably drive myself crazy thinking if I spent the money on one thing, I'd regret not spending it on something else. I'm silly like that.

The first thing that came to my mind was clothes. I'd probably use half of the money on a fun clothes shopping trip, though nowadays $500 might not buy that much. I'd love to splurge on great groceries and host a really nice dinner. I'd include a cheese tasting, of course.

I'd spend the remainder on books and kitchen stuff - mixing bowls, a pitcher, a gadget or two....

I'd spend it all on matching bras and undies that match, lingerie sets, and pretty sleepwear. I could drop a grand in La Perla in nothing flat. Man, what an afernoon that would be!

On one of my decade birthdays, my DH threw a surprise party for me at a karaoke bar. All of my friends showed up and it was great fun, but my gift from DH was an envelope with ten $100 bills! at that time, I went straight to the mall and bought some fun clothes!

Nowadays, I would probably spend it on house stuff- toward some landscaping... new pots and pans for my kitchen... decor-type stuff.

I'd also love to spend it on getting a family set of bicycles for us to tool around San Diego on.

I won a raffle a few years ago for that exact amt (along with the 1009G:rolleyes: ). While I seriously considered a canoe it is still sitting in my savings account. I'm no fun. :D

Probably give it to our church - we had a serious split in September when our former rector (Episcopal) left and took about 1/2 of the congregation and about 2/3 of the 'wallets' with him - it wasn't an accident that many of the "big givers" were specifically asked to leave with him to form a new church (they currently meet in a school and have no big bills).

Therefore, we now struggle with the mortgage, utilities, etc. while trying to regrow the church.

There isn't much that I really want anyway that $1K is going to make a difference. That said, drop $30K in my lap and I would go out and buy the best 2 year old red Volvo SUV that I could find. $50K would get my bathroom totally redone and the house extended like I dream.

I would use it all to go four wheeling in Silverton, CO with my SO. There would probably be enough left over to go shopping in Telluride. :D

Foodfiend! I hope you are in this situation and not just asking hypothetically. How fun!!

Being a cooking-related BB, I first thought about a new french door refrigerator (black, please) or a fancy wine fridge with a few choice bottles already in it.:D

But since so many have responded with things outside of the kitchen, I'd have to say a week at a B&B instead of always staying in a tent at our cherry farm!

A kayak, life preserver, paddle, and a roof carrier.

DH got one from the kids for Christmas and he loves it. I thought I was no interested, but now I am! Such great fun!

What a fun thread! I would buy a tandem bicycle and then make a reservation at one of the great little B&Bs in Confluence, PA. My husband and I enjoyed one of our most relaxing, cherished times there last summer...Kim

A trip to a Mexican resort with DH. Someplace all-inclusive (if we could get it for that price), so all we have to do is re...lax...

I would probably whittle away at it with nice bottles of wine that I normally wouldn't splurge on, luxe food items I normally wouldn't buy and maybe a nice dinner out somewhere i'd normally never go.

If we ever build our new home in Washington, it would go towards a floor upgrade or an oven upgrade or something more practical like that.

My last 2 profit sharing checks have been around $1000 each. DW and I have an agreement that that is my money and can't be used for bills or household expenses of any kind. So, I got a new bicycle with one and my new camera with the other. Pretty cool. :D (No worries, there is always some left over for a nice dinner out for us as well.)

Actually a trip to San Francisco would be great. It's been years since I was there, but I really enjoyed being in the city.

No question - clothes and shoes. I'm woefully outdated...

New furniture for the great room! I bought a leather set, and it's hot to sit on in the summer!

or someone to come in and clean the house monthly

or a landscaper to make the flowerbeds 'trimless', so we can just run the lawnmower around them, and not have to weed-whack! (This one's for DH) ;)

or a trip to Disney World!

I'm already slowly building up my pots and pans with birthday/Christmas money!;)

ditto on clothes and shoes. i too am very outdated or my clothes are too big. I have lost about 20 pounds in the last 10 years so many of my older items are too big.

i never seem to have anything to wear when DH and I have to go someplace, wedding, funeral, work function, dinner party, etc.

$1000 is a lot of money, but with clothes and shoes so very expensive, I wonder how much i could actually purchase to start a decent wardrobe!

I would go visit my sister and give most of it to her. She is having a run of really hard luck these days and could use it.
