View Full Version : Why does a photo show up as a red "x"?

OK, I have read the "how to post a photo" threads, but I can't figure out why some photos show up as a red "x". Does that happen when the photo is too large? Otherwise, what's the deal?

When I look at them (here at work) and there is a red X, I right click on the X, click on properties, and then copy the address and paste it in my browser and click enter. It will show up (and will show up from now on when I open the thread).
Now some that won't work with because wherever they are stored on the internet, the access is blocked at my work, so they won't show up and I can't see them. At home I will be able to.

Your browser finds the picture and displays it based on a URL address, the same as a web page. The X means that the picture can't be located by your browser/computer. On some web sites it may just mean that the picture has been deleted from its original location, or somebody changed the name or the folder name, etc. Sometimes it just means there was a hiccup when the page/picture was loading, and that's easily remedied. Just right-click on the X and choose "Show Picture."
Here, it may be because, as Pammela said, there's something preventing your computer from getting to that location easily.

I'm not sure why, but I always see the red X if a picture is posted from a Kodak gallery. But I usually just copy and paste the properties and then I'm able to see it (as Pammela suggested).

Ok, thanks. I can now see other people's photos that are the "x". Also, I gather that some that I see as an "x" may show up as actual photos to start with for other viewers.
Now, how can I keep my own from showing up as an "x"? When I preview my reply, it just shows as an "x". They are from picasa (google photo sharing site), not kodak, FWIW, and they are recently uploaded so the location is correct.

You can't. Sometimes the website it's linked to doesn't allow linking from other sites because of the traffic it generates. In some cases, the photo might appear for a while, then as hits increase, it gets blocked and you get the red X. There are some photo sites where this is not a problem, like Shutterfly.

Ok, thank you. I will just leave it at that, then.

So, any tricks on how to see these missing pictures with Firefox? We don't even get an "x" click on - just nothing.
