My DH & I are remodeling our kitchen and trying to do most of the work ourselves. We have completely changed our kitchen around and are having a problem. We used to have a large window that took up a good portion of an entire wall. This wall will now have some cabinets and our kitchen sink, so we are replacing the window for a smaller one.

Our question: how much space do you have between the countertop and the window?

I know we have to account for the molding and window casing, but how far above our countertop does the molding for your window start? Is there some type of standard space that we should leave?

I would greatly appreciate your responses. :)

8 1/2 " in my kitchen. My sink is under the window - but the counter top is the same height.

Mine is about 5-1/2" -- that's to the top of the windowsill. The tile up to the window sill is about 4-1/4". I would just keep it in proportion with the space, and remember the depth of the windowsill -- whether wood, tile or stone from your countertop.

My kitchen window is approx 5 1/2 ft wide by 5 ft high and the bottom edge of the window is flush with my counter top. I also have about a 6 inches of counter top behind the sink and to the window, so I can put plants or decorative bowls, vases, ect., behind there.

I live in the southwest and perhaps it's more common here, my family on the east coast has 3-5 inches between the counter top and the bottom of the window sill.

Good luck remodeling, how fun and rewarding.
