I have a couple of shirts -- from EMS and LLBean (http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?page=tropicwear-clothing&categoryId=3680&cat4=1047&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1). They work well and I like them alot. You can also find them (and other sun protection clothing) at Coolibar (http://www.coolibar.com/women-s-clothing.html), Sunprecautions (http://www.sunprecautions.com/shop_women.asp), Travelsmith (http://www.travelsmith.com/jump.jsp?itemID=630&itemType=CATEGORY&path=1,2,620,622,630), and this place (http://www.sunprotectioncenter.com/Default.asp?Click=2&gclid=CNKNwZSrqo0CFR8TOAod03UO0Q), to name a few.
Sorry about your burn. Hope you find something nice that will help.

Can you really burn through clothing? I didn't know that!
Hope you find something that helps.

I think you can burn through some very thin clothing. I've never burned through a decent weight piece though. Hollie, what were you wearing?
Speaking of sunburns, I've got a lovely one myself right now from jetskiing yesterday. And I kept putting waterproof spf 30 on all day.

I feel for those of you who burn in the sun - I'd loose my mind if I couldn't be outside.
I don't remember ever burning.

Nah, I'm annoyed with myself, not looking for sympathy.
I'm not sure, Hollie, if you were intentionally sunning or just happened to burn through your clothing, but I just bought some rash guards for my kids. We're going to Hawaii in 10 days and I didn't want them to burn. The clothes are UV rated (UVP, I think they call it) to the equivalent of SPF 50. One is a Billabong brand and I'm not sure of the other. We bought them at the local surf/skate shop. While not cheap, they've been worth every penny. My youngest boy got pink on the shoulders wearing SPF 45 waterproof sunscreen in the pool. With these shirts, he's been out for two hours and didn't get a lick of color.
Good luck.

Sympathy anyway - sunburns must hurt. Jetskiing is so much fun! I hope your enjoyed yourself!

www.rei.com carries their own brand name as well as other brands of UV resistant clothing. Here (http://www.rei.com/product/693291?vcat=REI_SSHP_WOMENS_CLOTHING_TOC) is a woman's shirt that says it is UPF-30+. Seems pretty good.
Ahh, maybe it's called UPF as Hammster points out and not UVP as I'd previously stated.
ETA: From the Coolibar web site:
UV Protection Factor or "UPF"
The Ultraviolet Protection Factor (or “UPF”) rating system measures the UV protection provided by fabric. It is very similar to the SPF rating system used for sunscreens.
A garment with a UPF of 50 only allows 1/50th of the UV radiation falling on the surface of the garment to pass through it. In other words, it blocks 49/50ths or 98% of the UV radiation.
All Coolibar brand garments rate UPF 50+, which is the highest possible rating.

I got rash guards for both of my boys at Target back in February. They have a 50+ rating and the boys don't have any color on them and we live at the pool.

Thanks for all the replies. I was working in the garden 3 hours. No shade. And I was wearing a regular weight t-shirt!

You can add SPF to your clothes by washing them with Rit Sun Guard. (http://www.amazon.com/Rit-Guard-Laundry-Treatment-Protectant/dp/B0000Y3F6W) I treated my 3 year old DS's summer wardrobe with it. I have no idea if it works or not because he's not in direct sun very frequently but it was worth a try. I got it in the laundry section of the grocery store. You just dump it in the wash.
