I'll start. I love Sirius Black. He is a romantic, tragic figure. He was a carefree, happy teenager with a loyal best friend. Then tragedy struck, and he became imprisoned. The experience scarred him. But after all those years in prison, he never lost who he was. He was still the same person.

I was just thinking about this today.

I don't know if I can choose one favorite!

I loved Hagrid. I tend to like the characters who make me laugh.

I also liked Snape's character - he's so intriguing and interesting. I liked that he isn't all good or all evil - he stayed true to the one thing he knew - that he loved Lily.

There were several more minor characters that made the book more fun and colorful - loved Peeves and Nearly Headless Nick, to name two.

To stray from your question a bit....

I didn't love Luna in the books, but I really like her character in the movie. Very well-played by the actress - a little spacey, but also a lot of kindness, warmth and even a bit of wiseness beneath the spacey part...

Also love Umbridge in the movie. They didn't make her into an ugly toad as in the book, but in making her appear so normal and June Cleaverish, they made her even more sinister. I thought this was one of the good ways they strayed from the book.

I'm sure I'm forgetting characters..........

Snape was one of my favorites, in large part for his ambiguity. I also think the fact that Alan Rickman had the role in the movies helped a lot. I also really liked Professor McGonagall - tough, yet kind. And I liked Ginny, especially the way JK described her fierceness - I think she's a good match for Harry.

Snape for the reasons lara mentioned. Whenever I read the books I pictured Alan Rickman

I'll preface this by saying I've only gotten 600 pages into The Order of the Phoenix so far (it's been disastrous getting caught up in the series soooo late, then trying to read EVERYTHING before it's all ruined :)--I've read the first 4.75 books since Saturday night!).

So far:

- Snape: The depth of his character rivals that of Harry's, and doesn't feature the annoying over-emotional aoutbursts. He's incredibly reserved, but I get the feeling that there is much more than meets the eye.

- Mrs. Weasley: I want her to be my mom. Somewhat stereotypical, but she's incredibly dedicated to her family (and the somewhat adopted few she takes in). She brings a good source of structure to the book, amidst relative chaos.

- Neville: The more I find out about him, the more I like him.

I don't like:

- Harry
- Lockhart (I know he was suppossed to be obnoxious, but I found it diffucult to read in some places)
- Mad-Eye Moody (at least not yet). Didn't get a proper read of him considering he was locked in a trunk for a whole term :)

Mrs. Molly (NOT MY DAUGHTER, B*TCH!) Weasley. 'Nuff said.

Draco Malfoy, because he added just a little touch of poison where you needed it. Surprised that he allowed himself to be helped by Harry.

Professor McGonagall. She always seems so poised, so intelligent.

Ginny Weasley. What can I say, the Weasley women are cool. I really enjoyed seeing her grow up from the star-struck (and Voldemort-posessed) little girl into a strong witch, herself.

Snape for his complexity, Dumbledore for his wisdom, Sirius for his romanticism, and Hermione because she is *me.*

Ambiguity. That's the word I needed! :)

My take on the Malfoys is that they loved the "glamour" of it all. However, when push came to shove and their lives were on the line - they were not ready to die for what they believed - because they really only wanted the power and the privilege, but were not really evil. Shallow and self-serving - enough to allow Harry to save him because that's what he really cared about - himself.

Although at one point I thought that maybe Draco had a change of heart - he didn't seem to want to reveal the identities of Harry, Ron and Hermione to Voldemort. But then once at Hogwarts again, he certainly did nothing to help Harry. So again, rather than a change of heart, I guess he wanted the power and the glory but didn't want to get his hands dirty. Just didn't have the backbone to get the dirty work done.

Snape - Not that I would enjoy meeting him but what an interesting character.

Along with that, I think Draco was, at heart, just plain ole jealous of Harry, and wanted the "fame" that Harry possessed, and didn't like Harry for just that reason.

Neville - Just loved his character arc from bumbling doofus to hero.

Wish Ron could've had the same character arc. I don't think his feeble bursts of intelligence as book 7 progressed were realistic. I think he's my least favorite character . . . but the OP was about favorites, so mine are listed next: Harry, Hermione, Snape, and Nearly Headless Nick, who's so minor as to be pretty insignificant, but who's a hoot (very creative of you, JKR; I remember first reading about him in an earlier book & thinking what a great idea he was!).

Can my favorite character be Hogwarts- the ceiling in the great room, banquets, floating candles, secret passages, talking portraits, funny ghosts, and all the beloved parapets, nooks and crannies.

My favorite characters: Remus Lupin; Sirius Black; the Weasley clan in a general sort of way, and Fred, George and Ginny in particular; Tonks; Neville; and Harry, Ron and Hermione.

I admit that I didn't like Snape very much until I finished the seventh book... but now I'm quite fond of him. I went back to the first book to see what JKR had written about when Snape first saw Harry, and was touched to see that he looked directly into Harry's eyes.

Snape. I read too much online fanfiction. (er, kof)

Lupin -- in the books, NOT the movie. I thought Lupin was woefully miscast.

Professor McGonagall.

The Weasley twins, and Ginny Weasley somewhat.

I don't care for Hermione at all.

THANK you. Ditto, ditto, ditto.

Also love Neville and how his character developed, and I gotta give a shout out to Harry-- It's impossible for me to not put myself in his shoes.

I didn't read any of the posts because I'm still reading the Deathly Hollows but I have to say my favorites are Fred and George Weasley. I just love those guys. If my brother had a twin we'd have our own Fred and George. I really love Professor Lupin too.

I can't wait to read eveyones responses when I'm finished with the book.

I didn't like Harry in Order of the Phoenix, either. Thankfully, the movie didn't portray how annoying he became in that book.

Snape has always been one of my favorite characters, mainly because of Alan Rickman's interpretation of him. He had an aloofness, but some elements of humor too, although dark at times.

I love the twins for their subversive acts, especially when they quit school because their talents were being wasted there!

I'm also quite fond of Lilly Potter, Sirius Black, and Neville Longbottom.
