In an earlier thread about making great rice, lots of you mentioned loving your rice cooker. My rice cooker and I do NOT have a mutually fulfilling relationship. The rice in the middle stays raw and crunchy no matter how many variations I make with liquid and cook time.
What type of rice cooker do you have that works? I want a new one!
I have an Oster and it works really well.

TamiK - What kind do YOU have? My mom just bought me a Black and Decker. I have not tried it yet. Hope that's not what you have!

Mine is a Rival, although it doesn't "rival" anything else in it's ability to cook rice. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

TamiK,
I have a three cup Panasonic rice cooker that I have used regularly for over 15 years without any problems. I also have a 10 cup Sanyo rice cooker. It has also made perfect rice faithfully, though I only use it for making sushi and when I have a lot of company. I don't know if these companies still make them but I would recommend both.

I just tried a $8.00 plastic rice cooker I picked up at WalMart. All you do is throw the rice and water into the cooker, snap on the lid and pop it into the microwave. 2 cups of raw rice, with 3 cups of water took 17 minutes and was perfect. Cleanup was a snap.
Maybe it is beginner's luck but I think me and my rice cooker will have a long and happy life togther.

Wow, I'll have to see if I can find one at my WalMart. I'd much prefer the microwave, especially in the summer. I have a Black & Decker rice cooker/steamer that I really like. I don't use it as often as I could because sometimes it seems like more work than just throwing it all in a pan. Also, it takes a little longer for brown rice than the stovetop because it actually steams the rice rather than boiling it. It's only about 10-12 minutes longer, but brown rice takes forever to cook even on the stove, and 10 minutes can seem like a long time when I'm in a rush. I do have to say though, if you want perfect rice, it's definitely the way to go. And you can steam veggies in it too, but I like my steamer basket; the rice cooker has more parts to wash (and I'm not fond of washing dishes!) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Peggy, you make your own sushi?!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/cool.gif I am very impressed!
I have a 10 cup Zo that I bought (at an American Base Exchange) when we lived in Korea. All of our Korean friends either had one or wanted one! It makes perfect rice, but it's so big that I'll have to admit, I usually make rice on the stove.
RobinF- the microwave rice cooker sounds like a trick. You'll have to let us know if it's consistently good! -JennyLiz

Well, I used my Black and Decker rice maker last night and it was the best rice I have ever made. It was so easy - just dump rice and water, press ON and wait for the light to go off! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I don;t know why rice is always so hard for me to cook, but now my problem is solved.

Thanks for the replies. At least I know there's hope! I'd also be interested in hearing how the microwave rice cooker performs on a consistent basis. Sounds interesting!

I also have a Black and Decker rice cooker. I have had it several years. I love it. The clean up does seem a bit much at times but the rice always comes out great! You can also cook veggies, meats, etc in it. Anything that you want to steam that will fit in it! Good luck with your decision! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Lynn: Could you give me an example of how you steam your veggies in your rice cooker? How much water do you put in for how many veggies, etc. Do you put in seasonings, lemon juice, etc. with the veggies while steaming or you do you add those later? I hate using my steamer basket in a pot on the stove and think using my rice cooker to steam veggies might be great for me. Can you share? Thanks!
