Okay I just need to vent a bit. I'm moving tomorrow and have had a full plate leading up to it. I've done a bit of packing up until today and took today off to finish. Uhaul now has be picking up my truck 40 miles from my home and I spent 2 hours on hold with them trying to get it moved closer to me to no avail but at least I won't have to pay for the extra mileage. Normally it wouldn't be a big deal except that I'm paying 2 people to come help me move who will be here around 9:30 in the morning so I need to have the truck here by then. To top if off, because of the screw up with where I'm picking up the truck I needed to take some valuables down to the new place today since I have to leave my car at the truck place tomorrow. While I was at the new place a major storm hit and it took me nearly 2 hours to get home. I'm now way behind on packing, exhausted and not quite sure how tomorrow is going to get done.
Ugh! I can't wait until I'm in there and can use my new kitchen with lots of storage (I've already got a lot of kitchen stuff there and I have room to spare!!!!:D :D ) but getting to that point is a pain in the arse. :( To top it off my friends want me to go out with them tonight but there's no way I'll get through tomorrow if I do that. :(
Thanks for letting me vent a bit. I'm finishing a glass of wine and going to bed.

Excellent plan. :)
Moving sucks even when things go really well, so sorry to hear about the frustrations.
It's only temporary and it WILL get done and before you know it you'll be enjoying your new place and the stress of moving will be a distant memory.
You should have seen DH and I moving across town in Indiana. We had movers come and do the big stuff and then we did all of the small stuff - but we only really left ourselves a week to get it all done. We were taking car load after car load over - not really packing much, just throwing it in the car. We barely had time to get everything out and run the vacuum before the new owners got possession of the house. I will NEVER do that again. It was very harried and very stressful and SO not fun. But we only had ourselves to blame.
When we moved to PA shortly after that move, a lot of people commented that they would not want movers packing for them. I said - are you kidding???? They do ALL of the work - it's GREAT! :D

Oh, I can't wait until I can afford to have someone do it all for me!
Okay, my plan of action now is to go to bed (it's a large glass of wine ;) ) and then get up at 6ish. I'll head for the new place with a load in my car, empty quickly load boxes in my car and head for the rental place (which is closer to the new place). Pick up the truck, transfer empty boxes and head home. Somewhere in there I'll call the boys coming to meet me and give them the heads up that I might be a bit late. I can direct them to breakfast food if needed. Supposedly the gem of a worker at the local Uhaul (the only decent Uhaul employee I found today) is giving me unlimited miles in the trucks so if that happens I'm going to have the boys do everything that is packed already or that I can pack while they load. We'll head down to the new place, they'll unload and head swimming. Once they unload the truck I'll bring it back to the old place (37 miles away), reload any remaining items that I don't need for cleaning and take that to the new place before turning in the truck. Uhaul scr*wed me out of 2 hours of time tomorrow and 2 hours today so I might as well put the miles on their truck. They are also giving me $10 off the rental rate to make up of gas.
Sunday I get to play with my cousin! :D :D :D Before cleaning the old place at least. I guess I might be sick on Monday. ;)
Thanks for letting me vent.

Uggghhh...I feel your pain. We are packing for a move as well and it stinks. We have to move to temporary housing since our home is not ready yet...blech...two moves in 3 months. Not looking forward to it. I cannot wait to be in our new home.
Good luck with the move :)!
Moving does stink. Getting settled in a new and better place will make it worthwhile. I think short moves can be some of the hardest. Hope tomorrow goes smoother for you , when you need it most.

Ugh, Robyn, what a royal PIA!! Sooo sorry it's such a drag.
Guess all I can do is chuck a few platitudes your way and remind you that it's ugly, but it's just a weekend of ugly. Then you get your cool new digs, no more nasty commute, and now a BIKE RIDE to work! Plus you get play time with your cuz on Sunday. You'll come through, and by the time you're settled, you'll all but have forgotten about U-Haul's Team Bozo!
BTW, you look a little green around the gills. You might consider staying home on Monday and not exposing your coworkers to whatever you might have..... :D

.... I think short moves can be some of the hardest....
I've never done a "big" move, but my last one was all of eight blocks...it took me over two weeks to do it! And it was from my cruddy college apartment! How is that even possible?

Robyn,
I feel your pain. :( Moving does s*ck!!!
We are also in the process of a "4-hour+ away" move. Our move is only temporary - for 6 months - so it is complicated by decisions about what we can and cannot live without for this time period. Plus DD is moving off to college at the same time. Lots of changes and upheavel in our house.
I can't wait until we are all settled in our respective spots - dear kitty cat too!
Good luck! And I know from experience that wine really does wonders to ease the pain...;)

Eh, there are usually just as many problems anyway :)
Good luck to you--moving does suck, but it'll all be over soon!

Oh, I can't wait until I can afford to have someone do it all for me!
Well, for us it wasn't a matter of affording, but of finding a company that paid for it all. ;) It was staggering how much they shelled out for our move! No way we would have moved if someone weren't picking up the tab........
Our smaller move across town - we had a lot of big stuff and decided to leave it to "the professionals". The local furniture store did for around $600. We didn't really want to shell out any money, but it went so much faster and they did it all in one trip.
Eh, there are usually just as many problems anyway :)
There are often problems, but it took 1 1/2 days to pack AND load ALL of our belongings for this last trip. It would have taken me weeks. I was more than happy to turn it all over to them.
We've been pretty lucky with our moves. Our last movers were quite meticulous and did a very nice job.

Oh Robyn, you are sooo right on this one...when we moved from PA to South Florida 5 years ago, I didn't think I'd survive...I drove the VERY LARGE U-Haul and my husband was in front of me driving his truck pulling my car on a trailer..I remember on the final leg, when we crossed the state line into Florida, I signaled my husband to stop, jumped out of the stupid truck and totally broke down...not to mention when we arrived at the house we were renting from my sister's friends...my sister was standing out front....first words out of her mouth: "You can't live here, there's no kitchen OR bathroom"....and that's another story:eek: So we ended up living with my sister's family for 3 months=3 kids plus dog:rolleyes:
I've already told my husband...our next move is going to be to Australia...and the only things that go with are my cookbooks!
Good luck!

Thanks for the commiseration! I had a hysterical sobbing fit yesterday while I was on hold with Uhaul. I was on hold so long that I had my fit, recovered and sounded just fine by the time someone finally got on the phone. I had actually looked up the address for their regional office and was about to get in my car and drive down there when she came on.
I'm heading down to get the truck now. Hopefully they'll have a few boxes I can buy (just to easy my mind and stress, that way I can just start throwing the last few things in) and then I'll get back here and can start staging on my porch. I've stubbed my poor toes more times than I can count.

It will all be worth it, so hang in there. We moved a little over a week ago to a bigger house with lots of storage and room for entertaining, huge back yard, etc. I don't have quite all the boxes unpacked yet, but after this weekend I plan to be finished. We hired Two Guys Moving to actually move the stuff, but I spent a lot of time packing with bubble wrap this time instead of newspapers. I have to say it was worth the extra expense.
I don't think wine is your answer, though. I found Wild Turkey to be a lot better for this occasion.

Hysterical sobbing fits are a good thing...release Robyn, release.
Having moved more times in my life than I care to think about, I totally empathize.
(My total is over two-dozen).
It is like childbirth though, hellacious as you are going through it, then you are settled in and forget all about the pain it took to get there. ;) UNpacking feels so good. (Tip: Do the kitchen & your bathroom a.s.a.p. - it'll feel like home faster that way).
Hang in there and just keep focusing on how great it will be once you're in your new digs! Wish we could all show up and help.

Can I just say this is my 18th move in 12 years and I moved 8 times prior to that with my parents but that doesn't include my transfers back and forth to the same houses every six months for years. One would think I could handle this better but I seem to be getting worse each time. :o
LOL I think that's why we start looking at settling down at some point. Hope today is going better.
Our last move was probably less than a mile as the crow flies and a little more than a mile on the streets. We did hire a truck and men for all the furniture and appliances -- all the big stuff. Still, I think we fooled ourselves about how easy it would be to carry loads of boxes and smaller stuff over -- and you don't pack as early or as much. It's a pain to pack, but carrying loose stuff can be harder.
My last two moves were solo, but I had two corporate moves. I didn't miss all the packing, but the process still stinks. I can envy somone's new home or new job, but I never envy them moving. ;)

Robyn -- hope your day is getting better, and that the closer you come to being moved in, the smaller the glass of wine you need, and the larger the one you will celebrate with!:D

It shouldn't be bad but it seems like this is becoming the norm now adays.
Oh, I can't wait until I can afford to have someone do it all for me!
Ditto here the sentiment, there's a lot of things that can go wrong with a totally paid for move. And I'll recap my m-f-h story.
(Background)This one was my 10th move since going on active duty in the Navy and probably the 20th ever (a Navy brat). It started with packing over two days (Wed and Thursday) a week ago (18-19 Jul). This is the first time it took two days and they didn't even finish in 2 days - even with LW helping. Forward to loading day on Friday... by the time I get home from work and see the moving van, just a 20 footer (we've had a 40 footer for the last 6 moves) and comment "it won't all fit in there" but the say "yes it will. (It didn't!) Then to compound that day, they didn't finish loading the truck until 10:50 pm - and I helped or it would have been later (they're only supposed to work until 9pm by contract). Only moving 185 miles (Alexandria) so they're supposed to drive up Monday and deliver starting between 8 and noon. They finally show up at 3 pm (luckily LW was there and not me). She said they worked until 9:45 and didn't have numbers on everything or do much except unload boxes - put most of the boxes in the right place but didn't in a few heavy cases.
LW is still trying to get boxes into the right places in the house and she's been at it since Wednesday.
That, is my m-f-h.
As always,
Les

I totally, totally, totally feel ya. I bought my first house and moved in January. On top of the moving, I had to have some work done to the "new" place. Murphy's Law took hold on every single thing, except for the purchase itself, which went fine. That move was just about the most trying experience I've ever been through. One day when it was just a normal day and nothing adverse had happened, I was driving somewhere mundane and just burst into tears for no reason. The stress was just incredible.
Here it is July, almost August, and I still haven't unpacked yet. I felt so ... traumatized ... by the whole thing, plus working two jobs, I just haven't been able to gather the strength to tackle it. Sure, the kitchen and bathroom are mostly done, and I have furniture to sit on and the like. Still, the majority of my possessions are in cardboard boxes and plastic totes, glaring at me balefully every time I walk by. *sigh* Small progress has been made, though, and will continue to be made. But still.

Robyn, I hope you got that in writing. We moved using UHaul many years ago and when we went to get our truck they had one that was about 10 feet shorter than the one we reserved. So we ended up having to make 2 round trips (about 45 miles each way). And they DID charge us the extra miles, even though it was their mistake for not having the bigger truck we had reserved----and they promised us we wouldn't be charged extra. This was in 1991 and I still will never rent anything from them ever again over this. Since then we have used Ryder, Penske or anybody else but UHaul and have never had a problem.
UHaul just sucks!

Well, all the big stuff is at the new place. I have some stuff in the fridge and a few small things here at the old place that I'll get some of now, some tomorrow and the rest this week at some point. My lovely landlord that I'm leaving has given me extra time if I need it so if I don't make it back until next Saturday it will be fine. Everything went okay with the main part of the move and I'm excited that the new place feels even bigger than I thought it would.
I've turned the Uhaul in already and actually ended up paying about $20 less than I would have if they'd done it right. The individual business owner where I picked it up took care of me big time. He gave me the insurance free, gave me the dolly free, and adjusted the mileage charge so that it all worked in my favor. If anyone reading this lives in or around Aurora I highly recommend the Texaco on Mississippi and Chambers. Ryan, the owner is a stand up guy for sure.
I won't have my DSL switched to the new place until Monday so I may not have internet access until then (depending on what wireless networks are around) but thank you to everyone for the support, I really needed it.
Les, oh, my that is a nightmare! I barely put everything I have in a small 1 bedroom in a 14 foot truck I can't imagine why they would think a 20 footer would cary a whole house. They must be crazy!

Ugh, I had a long response all typed out but I accidentally erased it. Suffice it to say, I'm in for the most part, enjoyed a wine, cheese and sorbetto dinner (Ciao Bella Mango Sorbetto which was amazing!) and my cat meowed all night long as he explored so I'm beat  . I doubt much if any cleaning will happen at the old place today. ;)
