Is it too late to jump on board? We live in Englishtown, and are interested as well. Please keep me posted.

Hi everyone. So far we have 6 "interested". I think that's a good number to start with. What does everyone else think? Maybe we should set up a get-together meeting at a centrally located restaurant? Let me know what you think. Either post a note on bulletin or you can e-mail me. My address is in my profile.

Hello everyone....I hope I am not to late...is there room for two more?

kathleen415

I think we should meet at a local restaurant first, so we can all talk about how we'd like the supper club to work.
How often do we meet? Do we rotate houses?
Just how 'cooking light' are our meals going to be?
RE: How many people is too many? Probably 8-10 members would be the max (whether 8-10 singles, or 8-10 couples). Any given meeting someone might not be able to attend.
We might want to split into two groups if that's too large, depending on what people are interested in. I checked the other boards to see what people are doing and there seem to be a lot of references to singles, couples, or family clubs.

I think Kathleen has excellent suggestions. My husband and I are also interested. Although I have two small children, I personally want this club to be just for adults for now. Does anyone have a problem with that? I'm not sure where we should meet since we're from all over Monmouth County. There are 7 people interested (not including significant others). I don't know if that's too big a number to start with. Why don't we see when and where to have a first meeting and take it from there. Any ideas of what type of restaurant?

Karen Arena
07-16-2000, 11:37 PM
Good suggestions, Kathleen.

My husband and I would be interested in a couples group.

JoF
07-17-2000, 09:16 AM
I agree w/Kathleen's suggestions. I think 8 to 10 people may be too many. Since some of us have indicated interest in a couples group, maybe we should split up the groups into singles, couples, etc. Although I am married, I don't think my husband would be interested.

Like Stephanie said, we should all meet, and then take it from there. How about a nice casual restaurant (but good food). Here's a few suggestions: Waterfront Cafe in Sea Bright; Chiafullos (spelling?) in Red Bank; San Remo in Red Bank; Two if by Sea in Ocean. A couple of these are BYOB if anyone is interested (like myself) in having wine.
When: how about a weekend evening-Fri? Sat?

You are not too late. Just waiting to hear back from everyone else about where to meet and when. Let us know if you have any suggestions. Originally posted by kbryda:

Sorry for not being able to get back to you all sooner. Living at the beach does have its drawbacks - we have friends and family visiting all the time that we never knew existed.

A prelim meeting in a restaurant sounds like a great idea. Though I am not familiar with most of the suggestions, any one of them is fine with me. Finding a convenient time for us all will be hard enough, I hate to get hung up on the where as well.

(By the way - let me apologize for any typos - I am a terrible typist and even worse proofreader - not a good combination. Oh how I love spellcheck!)

Hello,

Have we determined who are couples and who are singles? That might be the next step. In addition, the group keeps growing. Perhaps as Kathleen suggested, we should split into two groups. It looks like pstephans, Kathleen, Robin and kbryda are in Southern Monmouth/Ocean County. Stefanie, Sheryl, Jo and myself are Monmouth County. Maybe we could split by geographic location.

Let's try to get a firm head count, including significant others, and then decide if we should split up from that point.

As far as a meeting place/date - anywhere is fine for me, although the rest of the summer is crazy. Maybe end of August or the weekend after Labor Day?

Looking forward to it.

pstephans
07-19-2000, 01:55 PM
Count me and my significant other (bill) in for a couples club .... end of august works for me doesn't matter which day - just enough advance notice - I agree the where part is easier - any of those suggestions works for me. Looking forward to meeting all

kathleen415

Hi all - I think it might be better to have a larger group as we start. There will always be schedule conflicts or business commitments, especially if we meet frequently.
My husband, Tim, and I are not familiar with any of the restaurants posted so whatever the group picks is OK with us.
We're going to Chicago the last weekend in August(actually Thu-Mon), and having houseguests the weekend after Labor Day. But weekdays after 8pm are OK into September.

Karen Arena
07-19-2000, 04:32 PM
How is Saturday evening, September 16th to all get together? We can hammer out the location later, but if this date works for everyone, let's make it a plan. I also agree, at this point, that we should all stay together. Everyone has their ups and downs, and participation is bound to twindle from time to time. Singles and couples uniting together is great, as well. If we need to split at a later date, so be it. I am looking forward to this!

robinf
07-19-2000, 08:31 PM
September 16th is good for me. After the summer rush should make it easier to find a place that can accomodate a large group as well. We should probably try to make reservations at least a couple of weeks in advance.

Count my husband and I in (tho he will not likely particpate when it comes time to cook for ourselves!)

JoF
07-20-2000, 09:01 AM
9/16 works for me! For the time being, it will just be me. My hubby will probably participate when it comes time for us to host (he won't be doing any of the cooking though). I guess we'll wait and see exactly how many people and then pick a place to accommodate us. Looking forward to this!

07-24-2000, 01:13 PM
Sorry I haven't replied sooner. The summertime is sooo busy right now, so 9/16 is a great date. I'll probably be solo this time out, but I know my hubby will want to do the tasting as soon as he can. So where does everyone want to meet? Is Red Bank central enough for everyone? Looking forward to meeting all of you.

Hi All,

This is great! It looks like the Monmouth County Supper Club is coming together! We still haven't heard from SherylH and kbryda Re: 9/16/00. Hopefully, they will respond within a few days. If not, I will e-mail them directly to see if they are still interested in joining the group.

Stefanie, since you initiated this Supper Club, please do the honors of selecting a location for our first meeting. I hate to throw a wrench into this well-oiled piece of machinery, but John and I are in the middle of MAJOR house renovations, as well as some unforeseen, BUT HUGE, budgetary constratints. If you can select a moderately-priced restaurant to meet, I know that we would appreciate it. Red Bank is fine for us.

Looking forward to meeting everyone,
Karen

robinf
07-25-2000, 10:45 PM
Red Bank works well for me. To help with budget concerns, it probably makes sense to go with a BYOB place. Nothing drives up restaurant costs quicker than a bottle of wine that costs 3 times the store price!

Stefanie
07-26-2000, 04:07 PM
Red Bank is fine, but I don't know many BYOB places there. Any suggestions? The one place that comes to mind is Italian, I think the name is La Pastaria, or something like that. I haven't been to Red Bank to eat for a while, I usually stay closer to home. But I'm game for anything.

kbryda
07-26-2000, 05:01 PM
Sept 16th sounds good to me. La Pastaria is a BYOB, pretty reasonable, and delicious!!!

pstephans
07-26-2000, 08:48 PM
Wonderful!!!!! It sounds like La Pastaria in Red Bank on September 16th......how about 6:00 pm?

robinf
07-27-2000, 05:24 AM
GREAT! I will volunteer to touch base with the restaurant about reservations, etc. By my count it looks we are about 14 - 16 people. I've never been to La Pasteria and so am not sure if it can accomodate a group of this size. I'll let you know what I learn.

kathleen415
07-28-2000, 06:58 AM
7:30 or 8pm would be better for us. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

robinf
08-01-2000, 02:43 PM
Well, I called La Pastaria. They said they could accomodate us but with a party of 14-16, only with a preset menu. I checked out their website (www.lapastaria.com - i don't know how to embed URLS), and they do have facilities for parties, and a couple of menu plans. They seem a tad expensive to me - in the $30 - $40 range for a Saturday night. How does everyone else feel?

pstephans
08-07-2000, 09:35 AM
Sounds a bit pricey but I'm still in if everyone else is......thanks robyn!!!

Karen Arena
08-07-2000, 11:46 PM
Sounds pricey to me, too. Since we still have a considerable amount of time before our first gathering, perhaps we can pool some more ideas for a more affordable location?

Kathy
08-08-2000, 08:26 AM
I hope you don't mind my barging in , but I saw Monmouth County and had to check it out. There are a couple of new "Pizza/Italian" restaurants in Red Bank. I have passed them but can't remember their names..worth finding out about. They would probably be a little less likely to see you as a possible retirement fund! Sorry, no review of them yet!

Stefanie
08-08-2000, 08:32 AM
Maybe we should investigate other alternatives. How about Two if by Sea in Ocean? It's also a BYOB and I hear the food is good but I'm not sure about the prices. I don't know if anyone's into Caribbean, but there's a little BYOB in Bradley Beach, the Blue Marlin that has excellent food. I don't know of another place in Red Bank - any suggestions??

robinf
08-08-2000, 02:37 PM
I thought it was a bit much especially since they wanted us to pick a set menu before hand (but I didn't want to influence anyone). I think it's worth scouting out some other choices.

JoF
08-10-2000, 01:08 PM
Prices at Two if By Sea ranges from $12 to $25. I haven't been there in a while so not sure if it has changed much. Food is pretty good. How about Mexican? Casa Comida in West Long Branch. Not too expensive and food is ok. They do have liquor license. I think they can accomodate a big group with advance notice. Blue Marlin sounds good but isn't it a small place? There's also Paulines (Italian)(BYOB) in Matawan, Pauline's, that has good food and reasonable prices. They are kind of small so we would need to check if they can accommodate big group.

robinf
08-10-2000, 10:26 PM
I agree. $30 - 40 is a bit much especially if you have to preselect a meal! You know it won't be freshly cooked. What about Chinese/Asian? It's alays good with a group - you get to taste so many more things.

MrsReber
08-11-2000, 01:54 PM
Hi, I may be barging in here, too, but I have been to the Blue Marlin with a large group. It is a small restaurant, but I'm sure they would be able to accomodate you. Also, if you're planning a brunch, I have to suggest Our House restaurant in Farmingdale off Route 9. I had my wedding reception there, the brunch seems reasonably priced (I can't remember the exact price off hand) and the food is always very good. Hope you all get together soon!

robinf
08-11-2000, 09:09 PM
Forgive my duplicate post. I didn't realize you actually had to go to page 2!!! (and to think I was beginning to worry that we lost everyone when there were no new posts lol!)

I love the idea of Sunday brunch - it is my favorite meal.

Karen Arena
08-11-2000, 11:09 PM
Here I go with my wrench again...

How about meeting Sunday rather than Saturday? Perhaps Brunch/Lunch? Just a thought. Let's take a head count to see if it will work. If not, Saturday is still fine with me.

I have a friend who owns several restaurants in Freehold. If that's not too far for everyone, I can see if he can work something out for us. Two of his places are in the Borough, the other on Rt. 9.

I am glad we planned this well in advance so we have plenty of time to figure all this out.

Stefanie
08-12-2000, 07:25 PM
I like Sunday brunch too, but dinner still works for me if everyone can't make brunch.

What restaurants are we talking about in Freehold? Freehold is only 20 minutes from me, so its fine with me.

kathleen415
08-13-2000, 06:30 AM
Tim and I are ok for Saturday dinner 9/16, but Sunday brunch is only a possible, maybe if 9am or so. Wherever is ok.

Karen Arena
08-15-2000, 09:02 PM
Hi Everyone,

How does 5:00 PM on Saturday, 9/16/00 at
75 South in Freehold sound? I know that it's early, but I don't think that we, as such a large group, can go any place else at dinner time on a Saturday night for a reasonable rate.

It would be about $25 a head, and I can vouch for the food. It is out-of-this-world! The owner is a friend of mine, and they also catered my wedding. You will not be disappointed. We will also have the opportunity to speak with one another without having to shout over the hustle and bustle of a Saturday night.

75 South is on Route 79/South Street in Freehold Boro. Does this work for everyone?

Karen Arena
08-15-2000, 09:04 PM
P.S. 75 South is BYOB.

Stefanie
08-17-2000, 07:18 PM

So, are we all set for Saturday, 9/16 at 5:00, 75 South? Though my husband was plannig on coming, he just got an offer to go tuna fishing for the weekend which is something he has ALWAYS wanted to do. I will be coming alone.

Since it is BYOB, why don't we each bring a bottle of our favorite wine.

Karen - are you handling the final arrangements with the restaurant?

Karen Arena
08-28-2000, 06:02 PM
Hi All,

Robin, I'm sorry that your husband won't be joining us. Hope he has as good of a time as we will, though.

I agree that bringing a bottle of our favorite wine is a good idea. (Maybe we should arrange for some taxicabs? Ha! Ha!)

I will handle the final arrangements and post directions as soon as we hear from everyone. If anyone else wants to jump on board, please do so now! I will e-mail those that expressed interest who we still haven't heard from. I would like to let 75 South know the head-count by next Monday/Tuesday at the latest.

I am looking SO forward to this!

Take Care, Karen

Hi everyone. Here I am. Sorry I haven't responded sooner. 5 p.m Sat works for me. I too will be going solo (glad I am not the only one, otherwise I would feel like a 5th wheel.) Great idea about the wine!! Looking forward to this!

If I made my husband come when he could be fishing everyone would be miserable!! And, since I already had a babysitter lined up I figured why should I sit around the house when I could be out eating!!! Because of my husband's occupation, I've gotten very used to doing things without him.

So far the group for dinner on 9/16 seems to be:
JoF without husband
Robin F without husband
Karen Arena without husband
pstephans probably without significant other
Stephanie and husband
me, Kathleen415, and husband Tim, although he'd be ok not to come, since I have to go to work, and will need to leave by 6:30pm.
Still not heard from: SherylH and Kbryda.
Directions anyone??

Karen Arena
09-07-2000, 08:35 AM
My husband, John, will be there with me.

I contacted the two others. SHobbs will be attending, kbryda will not. I've counted 11 total. We are confirmed at 75 South. The reservation is under my name.

I will get the directions up here by this weekend.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Hi all,

Here are the directions to the restaurant. If anyone needs any clarification or more specifics, please let me know. My brain is a bit fried this afternoon.

Directions to 75 South

From the South:

Take Garden State Parkway North to Exit 100. I am not sure if it is Exit
100A or 100B, but look for Route 33 West/Freehold. Be alert after the 33/34 circle. Route 33 goes off to the left. Stay on Route 33 for approximately 12 miles. At the intersection of Route 79/South Street, turn right. 75 South is approximately ½ mile, on the right, across from Saint Rose of Lima Church and School. The restaurant is a Victorian Mansion. Parking is in the rear. The number there is (732) 780-4441.

Alternatively, from the South:

Take Route 9 North until you reach the intersection of Route 79/South Street. Take Route 79/South Street to the right. After approximately 1 mile, you’ll reach the intersection of Route 33. Stay straight through the light. 75 South is approximately ½ mile, on the right, across from Saint Rose of Lima Church and School. The restaurant is a Victorian Mansion. Parking is in the rear. The number there is (732) 780-4441.

From the Shore Area:

Take Route 33 West toward Freehold.

From the West:

Take Route 537 West/South (not sure?) into Freehold. Route 537 will merge with Route 79 into Main Street in Freehold Borough. At the Cornerstone Café, turn left onto Route 79/South Street. 75 South is approximately ¼ mile, on the left, across from Saint Rose of Lima Church and School. The restaurant is a Victorian Mansion. Parking is in the rear. The number there is (732) 780-4441.

If anyone is interested, check out the website at www.greatrestaurantsnj.com. (http://www.greatrestaurantsnj.com.)

See you next week,

Let me be the first to say that I really enjoyed getting together with everyone last night. It was such a nice time. From our discussion, it sounds like we complement each others’ strengths and weaknesses, with a good mix of cookers, bakers and dessert makers - and of course - eaters!

For those of you who initially were interested in getting together, but were not able to make last night’s soiree, our first group cooking session is scheduled for Saturday November 4. If you are interested in attending, please advise via this board.

Many thanks to Karen for setting up our first meeting at 75 South...it was wonderful, the food and the company. We'll let you know the theme soon. Can't wait to see everyone again. Anyone who couldn't make it, let us know so we can include you on Nov. 4th.

I was just looking at my calendar and realized our first "real" supper club dinner is a month away. How is everyone doing?

kathleen415
10-09-2000, 06:38 AM
I hadn't heard from Stephanie, so I just emailed her, and asked her to post the theme etc. on the bulletin board. I'm looking forward to getting together again.

Stefanie
10-09-2000, 07:37 PM
No we didn't forget about you guys, just a tad busy over here. To take advantage of the bountiful fruits and vegetables (i.e. pumpkins, butternut squash, apples) this time of year, the theme is "Harvest Moon". So get your thinking caps on and we'll be e-mailing out directions to our place the last week of Oct. I need a firm head count by then too. Now all we need to figure out is who is making what courses (appetizers, salad, veggies, dessert, etc.). Did we decide that everyone is bringing wine? For those of you out of the loop, the first dinner is on Nov. 4th at 5pm at my home. Hope to see you all there!!

SherylH
10-10-2000, 01:50 PM
Hi everyone. Harvest Moon sounds like a great theme. Should we each pick a course and let Stephanie know which one we would like to bring so we don't have duplicates? Will the courses be a surprise or should we let each other know so we can (hopefully) have our stuff complement the entree.

robinf
10-10-2000, 09:23 PM
I'll volunteer to do the salad - it's probably my favorite course. Why doesn't the main course person - is that you Stefanie? - let us know what she is planning on making and the rest of us can come up with accompaniements. I think we shoudl each bring wine - the more the merrier!

Stefanie
10-11-2000, 08:29 AM
I'm not entirely sure what I'm making exactly, but I do know that I'm going to have a chicken and a pork dish (probably a stuffed pork loin). I'm up for surprises as long as we make sure we don't do duplicates. So we need appetizer(s), veggies/starch and dessert.

kathleen415
10-11-2000, 04:56 PM
I'll do dessert - something with pears and something with chocolate, unless the pork stuffing has pears??

SherylH
10-12-2000, 10:12 AM
Kathleen, you beat me to the punch for desserts--pears and chocolate...mmmmmm. I guess I'll do the starter/appetizer. I have an idea already! Looking forward to this.

Stefanie
10-17-2000, 09:29 AM
Everything looks good!! We still need a volunteer for veggies/starch. Everyone please let me know if your spouse/significant other is coming with you. I'll post directions next week!!

robinf
10-17-2000, 04:18 PM
If no one else is able to, I'd be happy to do a starch or veggie in addition to salad.

My husband will be joining us. Is everyone still planning on attending? Has anyone new expressed any interest?

Karen Arena
10-17-2000, 07:27 PM
Hi All,

Sorry for the late reply...

John and I are looking forward to the 4th! I will make the starch: Rice with Leeks, Cranberries and Almonds as well as a veggie: Apple~Glazed Carrots. How does that sound?

My opinion is that more than one veggie is always nice, as long as someone is willing to make it.

See you on the 4th!
Karen

Hi everyone. Just wanted to let you know that John will be joining us on the 4th too. Are we looking at 10 people?

robinf
10-29-2000, 07:45 PM
Wow, less than a week to go! I'm working on the salad and wanted to recheck that no one had any food allergies to keep in mind (i'm leaning toward something with nuts). And is 10 the right number?

kathleen415
10-30-2000, 03:08 PM
Tim and I are food allergy free.

Stefanie
10-31-2000, 08:29 AM
Greg and I have no food allergies and I am pretty sure that the number of people is 10. I'll be posting directions probably tomorrow. Also, I thought it would be a good idea if everyone brought copies of their recipes in case anyone wanted it. Also I wanted to know how much cooking/prep will be done at my house so I can coordinate things. Lastly, if anyone is not drinking wine I'll have available sparkling cider and water. We're not soda drinkers, so if you want that please bring it with you.

SherylH
10-31-2000, 10:19 AM
John and I have no food allergies. Stephanie, as far as the prep of my dish, I plan on doing part of it at home and part of it at your house. I will bring my own cooking equipment and will need a burner (or 2 if available) for about 20 minutes and an oven for 5. Will that work with you?

I'll have the salad prepped and will just need to toss the components together. If I have a time (a big if) I'll also bring a mushroom appetizer which will need a few minutes of heating in the oven.

SherylH

Robin, nice idea to think about bringing an appetizer, but my starter/1st course is mushroom "based" and I would not to "mushroom everyone out". Just thought I would let you know.

I want to thank Stef and Greg for hosting us last week. John and I had a wonderful time, and everyone did a great job on the food. Looking forward to our Italian Feast at our house. I know it is early, but if anyone wants to suggest a specific date that works better, or one that won't work, let me know. Looking at 1/27, 2/3 or 2/10.

robinf
11-12-2000, 06:19 PM
Let me add my thanks as well. We had a wonderful time and are looking forward to our Italian feast. I am already working on soups. As for dates, 2/3 and 2/10 work best for us (Alan is on call 1/27 and Middletown is a little far if he has an emergency in Brick).

I was thinking that maybe we should post our recipes on the Food board as a way of promoting our success. What do you think?

Stefanie and Greg, thank you again for your generous hospitality.

Thanks, Stephanie and Greg! Tim and I really enjoyed ourselves. I think it's a great idea to post the recipes on the board, especially since I lost Sheryl's handout for that wonderful mushroom appetizer. I'll be posting as soon as I find my recipes. Regarding our next dinner: 1/27 or 2/10 is better for us.

SherylH

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. If any of you discover any really good recipes in your holiday cooking, pass them along--I am always looking. Based on the recent e-mails, it looks like 2/10 works for our next dinner, so let's book it! I purposly went out and got my 2001 refill so I could pencil it in. Keep in touch.

Hope everyone had a great turkey day! I can't believe Xmas is right around the corner. 2/10 is fine with us. Are we still doing 5pm? It seemed to work out well last time. Everyone have a great December and we'll see you in Feb.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. It's been crazy. I hope everyone had, has had, or will have, a wonderful holiday season.

Pam, speaking for myself, I say the more the merrier! We had 10 at our first cooking dinner (5 couples)1 or 2 more shouldn't be a problem. Our next dinner is scheduled for February 10. The theme is Italian. We each have a course to prepare. I have soup.

Keep watching the board for more info. If you want, you can e-mail me directly if you have any questions.

Hi, everyone. Just checking in and hope we are all still on for February 10th at our house. Is everyone clear on what course they will be bringing? Let me know so I can make sure all our bases are covered. I am hungry already. We are now 12 people. I will have John draft up some directions and get them to everyone via e-mail.

Tim and I are doing appetizers/antipasto. Will it be 5pm again? Is anyone doing salad, bread or vegetables? Perhaps Pam has an idea for those. Everyone please let us know if you're planning anything with meats or sausage so we don't replicate you.
See you soon!

I think 5 worked well--it takes that long to eat this many courses. I think it is a great idea for Pam to handle either a salad, bread or veggies. Not sure what Karen is bringing, so for veggies, we should probably coordinate with her course. Will anyone be preparing their food at my house?

I was planning on doing soup. At first I thought I'd do something hearty but am now leaning toward something a little lighter as it sounds like we are going to have tons of food (I'm not complaining). I'll cook at home and will only need to heat the soup.

Yes we're still planning on joining you.
We're looking forward to it!

Originally I was thinking of making bruchetta - which can be served on toasted bread.
But if you want me to bring a salad instead I could make a Caesar Salad.
Or I could do both!
Just let me know.
I'll bring the Italian Bread for dinner.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

Pam, I will count on you for bread, and if you feel like it, both the bruscetta and salad. I will be sending the directions to everyone via their e-mail instead of posting it on the board. Hopefully, I will get to that today. See everyone at 5:00 PM on February 10th.

Robin and Stephanie, thanks for offering to pick up bread. I got some already, but if you picked it up already too, why not bring it anyway. Karen was bringing an entree, but I have meat with my manicotti, so I think we will have enough to fill us all up (antipasti, soup, pasta with meat and dessert.) Don't you think? Karen, hope you feel better, and we will miss you.

We're still full from last night!!! Tim liked the coffee gelato so much I unearthed the ice cream maker we received as a wedding present 10 years ago, and never used, and found out it's a Donvier hand crank. Someone, might have been Sheryl, asked for a recipe, might have been Lemony Olives, but I'm not sure, so please reply to let me know.
There's a great posting from Peggy on the topic "combined with other activities..." on the Supper Club Exchange bulletin board (out where you choose supper clubs northeast etc.)
Sheryl, was your pasta recipe from your grandmother? Will you share? I still can't believe how light those manicotti were. Looking forward to our next meeting, which seems very far away.

Sheryl and John thanks again for the wonderful hospitality. I agree with Kathleen.. those manicotti were heavenly. I'd love to try to make them myself too!! In fact all the food was wonderful. Let me third what Kathy and Stefanie have already said - everything last night was delicious. Thanks Sheryl and John for your wonderful hospitality. I tried to decide on a favorite food and couldn't. Not only was the food great, but the company was great as well. I can't wait for Wednesday - I have got to watch Temptation Island at least once!

Pam and Karen - Since you were not able to make it, I volunteered my house for a dinner on Saturday July 28. Haven't decided on a theme yet.

However, we thought we'd like to get together before that - say early May. Could either of you host? If not, we thought we could meet at a restaurant. Let everyone know via the BB.

Thanks again Sheryl.

I just wanted to let everyone know what a wonderful job you all did on your different dishes. I was raving about it to my sister on Sunday. Everyone really outdid themselves. I too was trying to figure out what my favorite dish was, and I couldn't decide. As for recipes, I will e-mail my manicotti recipe to each of you (no powerpoint this time), and would appreciate Kathy's tart recipe, Robin's soup recipe and Stephanie's gelato recipes. I know I would love to serve all of those again. John and I thoroughly enjoyed the company too. I think we all fit together nicely. Karen and Pam, let us know if you would like to claim May as your date, or else think of somewhere we can all meet for dinner.

Today's my first day out of bed since Thursday, I have this nasty, nasty cold - am headed right back to bed after this posting.

John and I will be more than happy to host the gathering in May. I just need to look at my schedule and come up with a date. Does anyone know offhand of days that DON'T work for them? Please also throw out some ideas for theme. My head is too clouded right now, but I'll think about it when it clears.

Christy, welcome! How many are we now?

Again, I'm sorry we missed out on a great time, but I'm glad you all enjoyed it and that you weren't short on food on account of me.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Sorry we missed dinner -- sounds like a great time and great food!

We would be happy to be backup hosts in May if needed.

The dates that are not good for us would be May 12th and Memorial Day weekend.

For a theme - how about Mexican?

Looking forward to meeting you all in May!

May 5 we're visiting Mickey Mouse and we'll be traveling Friday, May 11 so would prefer to skip May 12. I'm working May 26. Best for us would be May 19.
Mexican sounds great for Cinco de Mayo, or mid-west/southern American for the Kentucky Derby. Mint Julep anyone?
Stefanie, please email the coffee gelato recipe.
Looking forward to meeting new members in May.

Welcome to new members: PamR, Christy, and KarenJ. With your husbands, we'll be up to 16 members. If Karen Arena's house can handle us all, I think we should all get together before proposing to break into smaller groups. Robin is hosting in July, on her deck, and I'm hosting in October, and our rooms are large enough for 16.
What we've done so far:
We met for dinner at a restaurant in Sept and decided to meet every 2-3 months, rotating houses. The host decides the theme and does the main course. Everyone else jumps in first come, first choice, on appetizers, bread & salad, soup, side dishes, and desserts. Everyone brings wine.
We met at Stephanie's first, for Harvest in November, and then Sheryl's for Italian in February.

May 19th is good for us and we'll make a vegetable side dish and a starch. See you then.

SherylH
02-20-2001, 04:09 PM

Okay I'm confused - I said I'd make a dip and another appetizer.
Should I just make the dip?
Or pick another course?
It seems like we'll be a big group so maybe we'll need a couple of appetizers.
Please advise.
Thanks

As it turns out, we won't be able to make the May dinner. It sounds like we'll miss a ton of great food! You all better post the menu afterwards!

Mark you calndars for July 28th. That is when we are hosting. I haven't finalized a theme but am leaning towards a clam bake or other beach-related theme. If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

Since I'm new to this, I wanted to know if the recipes have to be from the magazine or can we use anything as long as it's "light". Also if I can put my two cents in, it seems that if the group is that large, everyone only needs to make one dish to give everyone a chance to contribute. What do you all think?

Karen Arena
02-23-2001, 09:32 AM

At our initial meeting, we decided that we that the recipes did not have to be from the magazine, and I don't know that anyone has made anything from Cooking Light so far. Also, I think we said we weren't totally committed to 'light' just not high fat.
Regarding limiting to just one dish per couple, I don't think it's possible with this group. Everyone seems to bring a little something extra from another course, usually appetizers. And we've had two or three desserts each time. With 16 people, you need a variety anyway because not everyone is going to like everything.

Karen, are we doing authentic Mexican, or Southwest & Tex/Mex, or Latino, or what?

Looking forward to seeing everyone in May!

KarenJ
03-04-2001, 04:23 PM
Thanks, Kathleen, for answering my questions and you're right, everyone doesn't like everything and its good to have a variety of dishes to sample. I was thinking of dessert since I'm such a sweet freak, and I'm glad about the "light" thing not being a rule. Sometimes it's hard with certain cuisines. I have a hard time making decisions, so I'll look around a little more, but I'm definitely leaning toward dessert and maybe a side dish of some type. I'm so looking forward to this. May seems like a long time away, especially with all this snow!

Karen Arena
03-06-2001, 02:53 PM
As long as there are no objections, I think that any combination of the mentioned cuisines would work just fine.

Basil T's is upscale casual and is also a microbrewery. It's on Hwy 35 in Red Bank right before you go over the bridge into Middletown.

Since we haven't met anyone yet and

We'll need directions, too -- we're coming from the Manalapan area. Or we could call the restaurant for directions if that would be easier.

Stefanie
04-23-2001, 07:16 PM
I made reservations under my first name, Stefanie, for 14 people at Basil T's at 6pm. (I know its technically 13, but 14 sounds so much better!!) Please let me know if you can't make it so I can let the restaurant know. It's probably better if you get directions from them directly (phone# 842-5990).

Also I'd like to volunteer to put our tab on my credit card just to make things easier (I was a waitress in a former life)...all I ask is that everyone please have cash or check available on Saturday.

I think all the logistics are out of the way...can't wait to see everyone on Saturday!! :]

Hi Everyone. Just want to confirm what I will be bringing (subject to change in case I discover something more delicious). Lots of people...lots of food. Can't wait. Looking forward to seeing everyone

Karen, I will probably have everything ready and will just need 15 minutes of oven time to reheat.

PamR
05-11-2001, 07:14 AM
I will be bringing a couple of mexican dips
one with refried beans (for those who like)
and one without (for those who don't like- like me) and the chips for dipping.
Also cheddar-jalepeno corn bread to go with dinner or just to munch on whenever.
The corn bread is best when warm so if we could warm before serving that would be great.
Can't wait to see everyone and to eat!

Karen, PS to the above message, I'll need some oven time to reheat the potatoes and rice; the bean salad and the salsa can be refrigerated but don't have to be.
Also, thanks for the PNC site.

It's taken me some time to get back, but I was still having trouble deciding. We're bringing a Black Bean and Jicama Salad with Cumin Vinaigrette, Pastel De Tres Leches (Cake with three milks), and Chilaquiles, which is a casserole and requires 15 min in the oven. Are we "light" in the dessert department? I'd be happy to make another one. Let me know. See everyone Saturday!

I am wondering if anyone has a big coffee maker and would be willing to bring it? I have a regular 12-cup Mr. Coffee-type, but didn't think that would be big enough for everyone. I would appreciate it.

Karen, if you think we need it, I can bring a large coffee maker (30 cup). Also, I'll be bringing two different kinds of flan and a sorbet, so I'll need some freezer space too. Are we still 16 people?? It looks like we're all set, unless anyone else thinks we need more food!! See you on Saturday!!

HI...Stef, if it's not a problem, I would say to bring it just to play it safe. I think that the head count is 12. Thanks.

Hi Stef, sorry - but never mind the coffeepot. My mother-in-law has one that she will let me use. Thanks.

Hi Guys!
What's the protocol for drinks?

I guess we should we bring our own beer, etc.

There was some talk at Dinner about making margaritas?
Should we bring some of the fixin's for them and have kind-of a community bar?

Greg is making margaritas from scratch - lime juice, tequila, cointreau and gran marnier - they're killer!! We'll be bringing enough for everyone to taste. Pam, with beverages, everyone usually brings something they like(i.e. wine/beer/soda) and we all taste.
