I'm interested in starting a supper club in the Hartford, CT area, specifically in Farmington Valley or close by. I'm not a gourmet, but I love to cook while relaxing with a glass of wine! Let me know if you're interested!

I would love to form a supper club. I live about 20 minutes from Avon. Hopefully there will be more replies to your bulletin and we can get started.

Thanks Meghan! I hope we get some more responses also. My kitchen is medium in size, so I can probably handle a small group. Once some more people reply we can arrange a meeting to determine where we can have our first supper club!

I would also love to take part in a "Supper Club." I do not live that far from the Farmington area and do not mind driving. Sharing a glass of wine and some good food is always a great way to spend time.

I'd love to join the supper club. It sounds like I live the farthest away - Enfield area - but don't mind driving. Wine, food, and people are definately my style.

I know I'm probably the farthest away (Westfield, MA) but would love to get together for food, wine and meeting new people. Please let me know if a date has been set.

I just remembered to check in. I'm closer than Enfield - Windsor - and would love to join. I have a small area with a not-too-friendly but adequate kitchen, so could host a small group. Warning: I have 2 cats that would be shut up when group came.
If a date has been set, let me know. I have 2 weekends in August that are out, otherwise am open.

I am moving to the Hartford area in September and would love to be part of a supper club. I am also not a gourmet, but I am interested in getting together with others to enjoy some food and wine and meet new people.

It sounds as though we have about 7 people so far interested in setting up a supper club. Summer is winding down, and everyone is probably busy with vacations, etc. I suggest we look into the next step that Cooking Light recommends, which is to see about getting together for coffee on Thursday or Friday after Labor day, at a place that is fairly convenient to everyone (somewhere near the Buckland Hills Mall, or else West Farms Mall sounds OK) to talk and see how things feel.
I am also sending this out as an email from my home email, though a couple people have not posted their email addresses.

As I said earlier, it sounds as though we have about 7 people so far interested in setting up a supper club. This is the time of year when everyone's getting ready for vacations, and I had suggested a meeting the Thursday or Friday after labor day. Chris B is going to be on vacation then; is anyone else going to be busy? Is there a better time to have the mall meeting? Say, around 9/14 or 9/15? (I'm throwing out weeknights, but a weekend is equally convenient for me.)
I'm fairly new to the area, but thought the two mega-malls in the Hartford area might be the most convenient place for coffee and a meeting. Other suggestions are welcome (for example, I gather Borders has a coffee shop...any other places?).
I don't suggest The Rainforest Cafe in West Farms, though, unless you enjoy being rained on, trumpeted at by elephants or staring at gorillas as they beat their chests. I thought it a fun place, but I can't imagine carrying on a conversation there...
I'm copying this to the board, as well, so those who haven't posted their emails can read it and respond.

Hi! I started this conversation and haven't responded in a while, but I'm so glad to hear that you all are interested in getting together. I think getting together on the nights mentioned would be fine. A week night is best for me right now. I think that the "mega-malls" area is good. If we choose Westfarms, there are a few restaurants in the mall - Ruby Tuesdays and Houlihans. There is also a Chili's, Friday's, and Paparazzi's right around there. As far as Buckland, in addition to the "in-mall" restaurants, there is an Olive Garden, Chili's, Outback (or something like that) right around there. I agree that Rain Forest is too loud to carry on a decent conversation. There is also Glastonbury. I just went to Max-a-More the other night and had a great dinner. Lot's of possibilities there.
Should we all bring a favorite menu from one of the most recent magazines, and vote on the one we want to cook? We can also decide who will host - maybe the host should pick the menu?
Sorry I haven't responded quickly, but I've had some job changes - but that's behind me now!

It sounds so far as though Wednesday 9/13 or Thursday, 9/14 would be best for everyone. I think most people will be back from vacation then.
I hesitate to state a meeting place since I'm new to the area and not up on what is convenient. My basic feel is that the West Farms area may be the easiest to get to for most people. My experience with the Buckland Hills area is that it is a good place to get lost in. So let's have a vote on where to get together the first time:
(1) in a mall or outside?
(2) which restaurant?
The suggestion of everyone bringing a favorite menu to discuss sounds good to me; I'll root through my back issues and see what I come up with for myself. Another option would be to think of some sort of theme - like international cooking, or summer cooking; whatever - and have each person bring one dish from that.
If anyone has any suggestions for places to meet, please post it here.

Hi! I just bought my first issue of Cooking Light, which inspired me to go to the library and find some back issues - the recipes are really great! I read about the supper clubs in the May issue and immediately thought it was a great idea. Would you mind another person at the table when you get together? I live in Rocky Hill but work in Farmington, so meeting at Westfarms or Buckland Hills is fine with me. I enjoyed Paparazzi when my husband and I ate there, so it might be one place to consider - but I am always open to something new. I'd love to join you and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!

Hello, all -
So far it sounds as though Wednesday, 9/13, or Thursday, 9/14 are the best days to hold the meeting. Two people have mentioned Paparazzi's, near West Farm Mall, so I guess that should be the place.
If we're only meeting for coffee and dessert (light ones, naturally), then I'd suggest 7pm. If we're meeting for a meal, then I'd suggest around 6pm.
The suggestion was made that we bring our favorite menu from CL, which sounds like a good idea. The alternative is to bring suggestions for hors d'oeuvres, a main dish, side dish(es) and a dessert, and cobble together a menu that way.
What we need to establish is:
1. What day?
2. What time?
3. CL menu or multiple choice?
We're looking at something a little more than a month away; I think we can get this together, and I'm getting excited about it.

Just wanted to respond to some of the e-mails and posted replys. Either dates mentioned are fine for me and Paparazzi sounds like a good spot to meet and I would be up for dinner and or dessert.
I like the idea of everyone bringing recipes and putting together a menu from that.

Hi everyone. Let's go with Thursday, as Maria suggested. I also like the idea of bringing various recipes and putting a menu together. However, I would like to suggest we start out with Cooking Light recipes specifically, since that is what is bringing us together. We can always expand our recipe base later. Looking forward to meeting you all. Stacie

I put in my vote for Thursday, and let's make it for dinner (one meal I won't have to clean up after). Is 7PM OK?
I'll pull out four of my favorite CL recipes: some sort of prelude (as in soup), an entree, a side dish and a dessert. Maybe others can do the same. Or just bring your favorite recipes, period, and don't worry about the classification.
Does Paparazzi (sp?) take reservations? I've been past the place - looked interesting - but what I don't know about the Hartford area would fill a couple tour guide books.
If they take reservations, I say we put it in the name of 'Elaine O', who first suggested this group.

Dinner on Thursday night sounds great! I'll also bring some of my favorite Cooking Light recipes - that sounds like a good way to start. I'm not sure if anyone has checked it out, but I can call Paparazzi and see if they take reservations. If they do, I'll put it under Elaine O's name; either way, I'll let everybody know later today. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Hi everyone. I called Paparazzi... they do take reservations, so I made one for 7pm on Thursday September 14. I made it for 10 people, but they said we can always add more if we tell them ahead of time. I wasn't sure whether we wanted smoking or nonsmoking; I made the reservation for nonsmoking, but we can always change it. They told me that they add an automatic 18% gratuity for any party larger than 8, and they will only be able to give us one check for the whole party. I wasn't sure if that would be all right with everyone, so I wanted to check in and let you know in case we want to change our minds... how does it sound?
beejayw1
08-22-2000, 04:56 PM
Thanks for making the reservation!
7PM on 9/14 (Thursday) is best; no problem with non-smoking, or with splitting the check equally. The gratuity sounds reasonable, as well.

Hello, ASchneider -
Come ahead, you're more than welcome. We're meeting at Paparazzi's, which is outside Hartford, off Rte 71 (I believe; I'll be putting in a link to the address on Mapquest and emailing it separately to you.)
The more the merrier; come with ideas and recipes, and be prepared to relax and enjoy yourself!

MEETING WAS A SUCCESS
Four of us - Maria P, Stacie, Rebecca P and Beejayw1 - met at Paparazzi's at
7pm and had a good supper and some good discussions. We're sorry the rest
couldn't attend (Marie L had to bow out for medical reasons, but is still in
the loop), but hope to see them at the next meeting.
We have set a date for October 4, and are hoping to have an 'outdoors' theme
to the meal, which, barring bad weather, will be held outside at a spot yet
to be chosen.
A tentative menu was chosen:
Gazpacho Shrimp Salad
Chocolate cake
Dip
Indian-themed potatoes
If anyone else is planning to attend, please note this board and mark your
calendar. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Hi, Alina -
Sorry we missed you; you're more than welcome to come. We'll be posting on the board where the get-together will be; we were hoping to have it outside, near a lake or reservoir to the west of Hartford. Where are you coming from? If it's a long distance, I'm sure we could adjust things.
The menu as it stands at the moment is:
Gazpacho Shrimp Salad
Chocolate cake
Dip
Indian-themed potatoes
Do you have a favorite recipe from CL that you'd like to bring? Note: one of the people doesn't deal well with cheese, and I can't eat lobster.
See what sounds good and post what you think. You can email me and I can pass it around, too.
Looking forward to the 4th!

Diane--
Thanks for your message. There are quite a few cooking light recipes that I like, but I'm not sure what would fit best. (It looks like you have most of the food groups covered!). Suggestions would be welcome. I was thinking that possibly a vegetable dish or a bread would work. Let me know. Also, I am coming from Guilford, which is not real close, but I don't mind driving, so just pick a place that is closest for most of the group. Looking forward to the 4th!!

Hi Alina -
We didn't even think of a bread - and they're so delicious (almost my downfall!) Why don't you make a bread and bring it with you?
I'm relatively new to the area, so I'll ask everyone else where a good place would be that would fairly central to all. We'll keep the board posted!
Looking forward to the 4th!

Hello Everyone,
Since the 10/4 meeting didn't work out, I thought I would try to start organizing another restaraunt meeting date and anyone who missed the first meeting could join us and then we could decide on a menu.
I thought I would suggest a few dates and have people reply as to what ones might work (or suggest additional ones)
Thursday October 12
Tuesday October 17
Wednesday October 25
Thursday October 26
Let's start with trying to nail down a date and then work on a location.
Looking forward to hearing from everyone and getting this going. I think it will be fun.
E-mail or post reply to board.

We got together at On the Border on Wednesday, 10/25, and we got a lot accomplished.
We will be having our next meeting on Tuesday, 11/14, when we will be having a supper with everyone bringing a dish of some sort (I will be providing a cooked chicken, and I will be doing a spiced roast chicken - should be delicious!)
The next meeting after that will be Tuesday, December 12, when we will be having a cookie/treats swap, location to be determined.
If anyone reads this board and is interested, let any one of us on this board know, either by posting or by email, and we'd be delighted to have you come.

Report of November 14 meeting:
Stacie, Alina, Chris, Diana, Rebecca, Maria and Kathryn got together at Rebecca's house on a drizzly evening and had their first supper, which was a success.
Two appetizers: the bean and cheese dip, and the crab and water chestnut dip, were avidly sampled and pronounced excellent (thanks, Kathryn and Stacie); Maria provided a gorgeous salad with homemade dijon vinaigrette. Chris brought a baked vegetable casserole using carrots and sweet potatoes and turnips (which I tried and really liked, though I have avoided turnips for years) and a cranberry and apple crisp.
In addition to opening her very nice place for the meeting, Rebacca provided a curried rice pilaf that I enjoyed so much, I nearly carried the leftovers off. Alina made the pear and walnut pie, and Diana brought herb roasted chicken made.
We tried a Chardonnay from New Zealand, which was very good, and had a lot of fun chatting and getting to know each other.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 12 at Maria's. We will be having a cookie/treats swap, and will be flinging any notion of reduced calories out the window (the holidays ARE coming up, after all!)
If anyone has any questions or is interested in joining, please feel free to post to this board or email me.

We had our meeting last night (Tuesday, 1/16/01) at Kathryn's lovely home in Guilford. There were only four of us due to work conflicts and some health issues, but the food was excellent.
Maria made the crab and artichoke dip, and concluded that it could use a little more garlic, but all enjoyed it.
Kathryn made the beef, leek and beer stew from CL, and if she wishes to go into a sideline, she could give the canned stews a run for their money!
Kathryn also made the Chocolate Charlotte from CL's MAKE IT AHEAD publication. All that taste and lowfat, too!
Alina brought bread, including a light recipe beer bread that she promises to email to us all. She also brought a sunflower seed bread.
Diana made the Tarascan soup (Mexican style bean) and a fruit salad made with raspberries, mandarin oranges, grapefruit, peaches and grapes, with the addition of a half cup of brandy.
All had a great time, the wine was tasty and the companionship was a lot of fun.

Just a quick note about last night's meeting.
Kathryn, Alina and I met at Alina's friend's gorgeous condo for 'breakfast for dinner'. There was a last-minute, unavoidable cancellation and one no-show (hope she's OK) but we enjoyed chatting.
Kathryn brought banana bread made from a CL recipe (I ate a piece on the way home, reflecting that it could be dessert). Alina made a light recipe of breakfast burritos - lightly scrambled eggs with peppers, rolled up in flour tortillas and lined up in a pan, with a cream sauce and light cheese melted over top. I made a light breakfast strata with turkey ham, cheese, mustard and cayenne. If I had known of the allergies of one of the members, I would have substituted another meat for ham.
Alina also made smoothies using nonfat peach yogurt, strawberries, honeydew melons and cantaloupe - delicious!
Kathryn brought the makings of mimosas, but in view of the low number of attendees tonight and the distance some of us had to drive, we decided to have them another time.
Meeting date for next month is up in the air and will be pursued by email.
If anyone has any questions, please feel free to email me or anyone else on this board.

The Hartford Area (a/k/a All Over The Map) Supper Club had its meeting last night at Diana's house, despite hot weather and thunderstorms.
Kathryn brought balsamic vinegar marinated vegetables (from the recipe finder), which included red peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, tomatoes and portobella mushrooms. It was delicious, and we discovered that if the vegetables are allowed to marinate overnight, they taste better still!
Rebecca brought spicy crab dip with an assortment of corn chips - Guiltless Gourmet blue, regular, and standard tortilla chips. We scarfed the dip down and agreed that it was delicious. Unfortunately, she took the leftovers with her...
Maria brought the star-gazer shrimp from the most recent cooking light. I'm hooked! They were good hot and cold, and the dipping sauce was wonderful.
Alina contributed a cheesecake made with chocolate mints: very rich and satisfying, and I couldn't tell it had nonfat cream cheese in it. The leftovers are living in my freezer and we're taking bets on whether they will make it to the next meeting.
Judith contributed a tomato and fresh mozzarella salad. If you see 'Ugli' tomatoes in your grocery store, buy them: wonderful tomato taste!
Diana made spiced peach tea from the 1994 Cooking Light cookbook. It was cool and refreshing, but could use a little rum... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
Next meeting is at Kathryn's house.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, August 7th in Middletown. Due to a smaller-than-usual group (vacations and weddings) we decided to take the evening off and have a restaurant meeting. New members always welcome - just post a message here.

Hi Kathy,
My name is Dawn and I am moving to Connecticut from Boston at the end of August. I would be very interested in joining the Hartford Club if you have any room. I would not be able to make the August 7th meeting since I am still in Boston. Do you have your September meeting planned yet? Any info would be great! Thanks.

Hi Dawn,
We usually meet on the second Tuesday or Wednesday of each month, but are pretty flexible. Our September meeting will be in Rocky Hill, but we haven't set a date yet. Are there any dates that are bad for you? We have plenty of room for new members, and hope you can join us.
Good luck with your move! We look forward to meeting you. :)

Hi Kathy,
Thanks for the info. I would love to join you for the September Meeting. I am going on vacation right after my move( I can't wait!) and will be gone from Aug 31- Sept 7th. Anything after that is fine with me but please don't feel you have to change anything if you usually meet in early Sept. Since I'll be new to Conn, this will be a great opportunity to meet some new people. Thanks again for the info.

Dawn, the graphic is called an "avatar" (no clue what that means). To get an avatar under your username, go up to the top right of this screen and hit the button marked "user cp". This is where you can edit your user profile, set preferences etc. Select "edit options" then go to the bottom of the page and "choose avatar". CL has a bunch of them you can choose from. Have fun! :)
P.S. Oops I just remembered - I don't think you can edit your user profile until you've made at least 10 posts. You may want to check the Technical Support board for more info.

Hi, all -
I'm bumping this board back to the top of the list. Some others have expressed interested in joining, and I've passed on the group's welcome.
I'm back from vacation, and I imagine the others will be checking in (and I'll want to know how things went, Kathryn! ).
Date is up in the air right now, but the restaurant meeting sounds like a good idea. We can strategize on the next quarter's meetings.
Looking forward to getting together!

Hi, I live in Naugatuck, however I work at the West Farms Mall. I moved from Manhattan two years ago and truly miss the variety of ingredients and foods that I enjoyed there. (I make a pilgrimage to the 14th St Farmers Market several times a year..lol)
I have a small apt but could fit 6-8 people for a buffet supper. You can reach me at grapevines13@aol.com. Thanks.

Hi, all -
The Hartford Area Supper club is setting up its first fall meeting in the wake of a busy summer with a wedding, a departure, a vacation and other such things.
Early October is contemplated; date of week not set yet. It had been decided that a restaurant meeting, to meet and greet newcomers and do some strategizing would be a good idea. (Frankly, we have some ideas for themes, and the boards have begun to offer lots of ideas, so we need to discuss).
Please feel free to contact me directly if you're interested; you're more than welcome!
Incidentally, a supper club is forming up for the southern CT (New Haven, e.g.) area; for more information, search the boards or ask member KathrynY for info!

Early October sounds good. Monday or Tuesday evening would work best for me.

Hi everyone,
I am new to the area and am pleasantly surprised to find a supper club forming here. I live near the Buckland Hills mall. I lived in Providence a few years- from Louisiana. I think the supper club is a great idea and would like to participate. Please let me know if you are still planning to get together soon and have room for one more.
